People will believe and embrace absolutely anything that fits their worldview and reinforces their biases. The idea that they know about these secret conspiracies is an easy explanation for them and makes them feel smarter than everybody else because they are "in the know" and aren't fooled by what's going on. Clear thinking and real evidence be d@mned.

People who are scared they don't understand the world around them when it doesn't fit to a plan, and a conspiracy helps them cope because at least if "The Jews" are responsible, that make sense.
The other are people searching for purpose or fulfillment, and the conspiracy community gives them that belonging as well as what you said about being "smarter" than the "NPCs" who "don't think for themselves."
Neither group can cope with the idea that the world is a chaotic place and it's mostly stupidity and lack of skill among our elected officials, not evil machinations, that drive the machine.

No people are smart enough to see that what is pushed down their throats is not what their own eyes see and ears hear.
couple of examples
1) JFK head rocks backwards and also has the exit wound(which is always larger) on the back of his head
2) Buildings do not ever collapse in their footprint unless there is a demolition
3) Phone calls get dropped even today - 50+ years after the "moon landing", but we had perfect reception with no delay even through the Van Allen radiation belt
