Good Image Rep would make the starting QB decision for Dabo

Nov 19, 2014, 10:51 AM

I have to say that whoever is sitting in the Athletic Department and is responsible for Messaging/Brand Management/Damage Control/Image Oversight is absolutely fantastic. I mean Jedi level good.

The facts going into the presser:

1) Cole Stoudt clearly cost you the game or, at a minimum, 80% lost you the game. Without his miscues - final score is likely 14-9. You go into 4th Qtr with a 1 score deficit.

2) Nick Schuessler comes in and in limited action - goes 4-4 and, although his reps are limited - he does not do anything to gift GT points. He takes a few sacks and has issues with protection calls but by that time in the game GT is flooding the gaps and blitzing with their ears pinned back.

3) Morris watches the film - sees what everybody sees - and says we have got to open up QB competition this week. Nick deserves a chance. Dabo in Sunday presser supports this and says decision will come late in week.

I imagine Dabo was advised, by someone pretty savvy. That person likely noted G-State is not good. We are - overall - much more talented. Whoever plays QB in this game will likely do well and have nice stats. After explaining this said PR person likely then laid out two lines of action and their potential ramifications of the image and perception of Dabo and staff.

Line of Action 1 - Start Nick - Say he throws up 300 yards and 3 touches. Great for Tiger Nation but is it good for Dabo World. Questions come from all sides 2nd guessing why Dabo left Nick on the pine in every game that Cole was leading us through the march of sludge. One would think with Nick's perfomance against G-State - that Dabo should at least have given him a chance. Stack this on top of the questions from early in the year about Dabo's decision making in the Cole/DW controversy and one honestly would have a fair amount of ammunition to legitimately question Dabo's decision making and talent management.

Line of Action 2 - Start Cole - Again G-State sucks so Cole is very likely to rebound and have a nice game which would vindicate Dabo and substantiate the fact that Dabo really does know much more than the rest of the crowd. DW likely starts against Coots and this whole Cole Stoudt starting thing is (hopefully from Dabo's view) put to bed.

I suspect that is why Dabo reversed course and prematurely cut short the "QB competition". Again - this really really really sucks for Nick BUT again - if I am advising Dabo - I note that this is really his best and option by a mile.

It doesn't take a genius to look at GSU

And see that they are completely, utterly outmatched. In theory, we only have to cover this last week until DW gets back. He's already throwing and moving around, he's going to be fine.

It matters so little as to who starts that you might as well toss Cole out there. Worst case, he throws 3-4 INTs and we still win. Then DW comes back and we can stop all of this bickering.

Everything you said makes perfect sense

But that's the problem with this coaching staff. They are more worried about their image rather than putting the best players on the field.

We saw it early this season with CS/DW. Everyone and their mama knew that DW was light yeas better and should have started SC State. Dabo refused, chastised the fans and kept on trucking with Cole. But we all knew eventually DW take over. Then came the comment Dabo made about "playing the hot hand" vs FSU. He was just looking for an opportunity to get DW in the starter role and that was it. Instead of making the hard decision during the UGA game (it was obvious who gave us the best chance), Dabo waited until he could do it softly without hurting cole's feelings as much.

Cole was talked out of transferring in the spring. Dabo and Chad feel horrible that they would talk him out of it and then bench him for DW or heaven forbid the 3rd string.

Getting tired of the favoritism.

CUat: If your last sentence is true, this program will never go the the heights we want under Dabo's leadership. As I've said many times, He's supposed to be the CEO of Clemson football and CEO's make decisions that are best for the whole versus one individual. Case closed.
