Good article by Rick Reilly

Aug 16, 2012, 9:27 AM

Pretty much sums up my feelings for Notre Dame.

Rick is the only writer at ESPN that really doesn't give a you know what about anything. He will call a spade a spade all day.

I agree, I may not always agree with RR, but i respect his 0 flips mentality.

I asked my Dad some years ago why Notre Dame

Aug 16, 2012, 9:58 AM

continued to have the national prominence it once enjoyed, and he replied that many years ago the school developed a strong, east coast following as its games were generally heard over the radio. He believed their continued prominence was a holdover from that era. Even as a youngster our school junior band's fight song was the Notre Dame song. I certainly won't knock the school, but I, also, certainly wouldn't favor any kind of special deal to get them into any conference. Let their records speak as do everyone else's.

A lot of catholics in the North East and most of the media

Aug 16, 2012, 10:18 AM

is located in the area as well. Thus the huge ND following in that region and all the press coverage they get. ND is favored in the media for the same way you never hear of a #1 recruit coming from East BFE North Dakota...media attention. How can you be the number #1 recruit if no one knows you exist?

Same reason a lot of older people down here

are Redskins fans. It used to be that the only NFL games on the radio in parts of the south were Redskins games.

Since soccer seems to be a topic today

"In Europe, if you play too much bad soccer for too many years, you get "relegated" to a lower division, moved down, demoted. It just happened to the Blackburn Rovers."

That's not exactly true, it only takes one bad season. The bottom 2 teams from the top division each year get dropped.

Re: Good article by Rick Reilly

As much as I don't like ND this article misses the main point that keeps ND relevant. ND doesn't have to win to have a huge national following. Just like the SEC gets extra hype because of their huge fan bases.

ND has the NBC contract because people watch ND football. You can't just say they don't deserve it because they aren't good anymore. We all know the top 25 is based more on hype than fact and ND will always have hype.

Could you imagine watching Clemson vs Ball State every

Aug 16, 2012, 10:13 AM

week. Or Clemson vs Furman or Duke or Wofford every fricking week.

Stanford has been good as of late but has mostly sucked the last 20 years. ND does play USC and Michigan but outside those 2 games they play inferior teams. Army, Air Force, Navy, Purdue, Tulsa, San Diego St, Wake Forest, and BC? Nevada in 09. That sure is a tough schedule!

They play Michigan, at Michagan St, at USC, Miami, at Oklahoma, BYU, at Stanford this year. Purdue, Navy, Air Force, Army, BC and Wake should all be wins for them but getting to 6-6 may prove very difficult.

Agree. He is generally a little too dooshy for my taste, but he hit this on the head. He sometimes will come through with a solid human interest piece every once in awhile.

Tim Bourret...

Aug 16, 2012, 10:52 AM

addresses Notre Dame to the ACC in his column in the most recent IPTAY magazine. According to him, Notre Dame makes 15 million a year on its deal with NBC. ACC schools get 17+ million from the ACC TV deal. Now, he didn't say how much Notre Dame gets from the Big East TV deal for the rest of its sports, but you'd have to think it would make as much, if not more, money in the ACC since the conference could re-negotiate the TV deal for significantly more money. He and a lot of his ND classmates are in favor of joining the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Reilly's always been able to weave a colorful column......

Aug 16, 2012, 11:05 AM

this one's no different......and its impossible to disagree with him.....unless you're wearing that goofy leprechaun outfit
