Wear helmets with facemasks, shoulder pads, elbow pads,and hockey gloves...but girls lacrosse players maybe wear goggles and nothing more?

CHECKING VS. NO-CHECKING
When it comes to gear, here’s the most important differentiator: men’s lacrosse allows checking, while the women’s game doesn’t. This means that male players have to face the constant threat of getting bumped or poked with a stick. Like hockey, there are rules that disqualify especially violent checking. But that doesn’t mean legal checks don’t carry a risk of injury, which makes protective gear a must. Helmets, mouth guards, shoulder and elbow pads, and gloves are all standard in men’s lacrosse.
In women’s lacrosse, any kind of body checks or stick checks that hit the player will result in a penalty, so the gear requirements are significantly smaller. Most female players are required to wear goggles and mouth guards while helmets and protective padding are reserved for goalies.

My son played lacrosse in high school. Men’s lacrosse is full contact. They can beat the crap out of each other with their sticks and can full body check each other. My son once got two broken ribs in a game. Ladies
lacrosse is basically no contact at all so they don’t need the pads.

and I oftentimes am . . . When the originators (Native Americans) 1st played the game, it was called, “Little Brother goes to War” . . . or something along that line.
It is indeed, intended to be, a “full contact” sport.

Yes. They refer to at as stick ball and tribes used to play the game instead of going into full on war. The winning tribe won whatever dispute they were currently in conflict about. I worked in Cherokee, NC for a year and they play the game at an annual festival. It is basically full on war. You can tackle, punch, you name it. The lacrosse aspect is secondary. Very entertaining to watch to say the least.

Rules are different for contact.
Here's the easiest way to think of it...
Men's lacrosse is like the contact rules of football.
Women's lacrosse is like the contact rules of basketball.
