86 - Clemsons Death Valley (THE One True Death Valley) holds Up to 86 K

25

Jun 6, 2024, 12:03 AM
Reply

Clemson’s Death Valley opened in 1942. Three years after this brilliant prediction from Coach Jess Neely (as stated on ClemsonTigers.com):

“Before Jess Neely left for Rice after the 1939 season, he gave Clemson a message.

“Don’t ever let them talk you into building a big stadium,” he said. “Put about 10,000 seats behind the YMCA. That’s all you’ll ever need.”

https://clemsontigers.com/death-valley/

Death Valley Origins:

According to Sports Illustrated:

Following Clemson’s first Southern Conference Championship in 1940, construction began on a new stadium in the summer of 1941. The plans for the new stadium called for it to seat 20,000 people.

Clemson head coach Frank Howard commissioned his players to help clear and survey the area.

“Coach Howard said we need some help and there we go,” said former Clemson player Charles Wright to The Post & Courier (Charleston, S.C.). “It was not a paid job. We worked all summer, clearing brush, cutting trees, getting all the stuff off the field.”

Memorial Stadium opened its gates for the first time on September 19, 1942.

“The gates were hung at 1 p.m., and we played at 2 p.m.,” Howard later said.

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/the-story-on-why-death-valleys-real-name-is-memorial-stadium

Frank Howard told a number of great stories about getting the stadium ready to open. Here are two great ones according to ClemsonTigers.com:

“The construction of Memorial Stadium did not proceed without problems. One afternoon during the clearing of the land, a young player proudly announced that he was not allergic to poison oak. He then proceeded to attack the poison oak with a swing blade, throwing the plants to and fro. The next day, the boy was swollen twice his size and was hospitalized.

Howard said that the seeding of the grass caused a few problems.

“About 40 people and I laid sod on the field,” he said. “After three weeks on July 15, we had only gotten about halfway through.

“I told them that it had taken us three weeks to get that far and I would give them three more weeks’ pay for however long it took to finish. I also told them we would have 50 gallons of ice cream when we got through.

“After that, it took them three days to do the rest of the field. Then we sat down in the middle of the field and ate up that whole 50 gallons.”

https://clemsontigers.com/death-valley/

Nickname: “Death Valley”

Fansided.com describes the granting of the Death Valley nickname:

“Built in 1942, Clemson’s home field didn’t earn its sinister nickname until 1948. According to Clemson’s official website, the Tigers owe the name to Lonnie McMillian, who dubbed the stadium “Death Valley” after his Presbyterian College team was continuously dominated there. Clemson head coach Frank Howard was gifted a rock from the real Death Valley in California shortly after, and thus the reign of the name was solidified.

After taking a few years to gain traction, the title “Death Valley” has defined the experiences of visiting teams at Clemson since the 50s.”

https://fansided.com/2021/10/02/clemson-called-death-valley-explained/

Of note:
USA Today confirms that Clemson’s stadium was the first stadium to be named “Death Valley.” LSU’s stadium was originally “Deaf Valley.” LSU fans copied the Death Valley nickname from Clemson:

“On Jan. 1, 1959, when LSU and Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon capped the school’s first national title with a 7-0 victory in the Sugar Bowl, some of those fans stole “Death” when describing the home valley.

So, Clemson’s home is the original Death Valley, and LSU’s is the latest.”

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2022/09/college-football-why-are-lsu-and-clemson-both-called-death-valley

They do say “Imitation in the sincerest form of flattery!”

Expanding Death Valley:

ClemsonTigers.com provides a timeline of Death Valley expansion:

The Timeline of “Death Valley”
• Early 1942: Death Valley completed with 20,000 seats
• Sept. 19, 1942: Memorial Stadium opened with a win against Presbyterian College, 32-13
• 1958: 18,000 sideline seats added
• 1960: 5,658 West Endzone seats added
• 1974: Playing surface named and dedicated after Frank Howard
• 1978: East Upper Deck added
• 1983: West Upper Deck added
• 2006: WestZone added, containing locker rooms, offices, a student athlete enrichment center (now known as Nieri), and a luxury club level with over 1,000 seats
• 2022:
o “DaboTron” video board added
o Eight main stadium light poles added, allowing for individual light fixture control, with spotlighting on Howard’s Rock and overall higher quality lighting.
o IPTAY Master Club Renovation

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/facilities/memorial-stadium/

Death Valley Attendance:

Attendance information according to ClemsonTigers.com:

“The storied edifice added to its legend when the first meeting of father-and-son head coaches (Bowden Bowl I) took place before a record crowd of 86,092 fans in 1999.

“Clemson has finished in the top 20 in the country in average home attendance for 43 straight seasons. Clemson ranked third in the country and first in the ACC in total attendance in 2020 and led the conference (and finished 14th in the nation) in average attendance in 2023.”

https://clemsontigers.com/death-valley/

Death Valley Win-Loss Record:

Clemson’s record at Death Valley illustrates why the stadium has the name “Death Valley.” According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Entering 2024, the Tigers have totaled 340 wins in 82 years and have won 76.2 percent of the contests (340-104-7). Visiting defending national champions are 0-3 all-time at Memorial Stadium.

“Since the advent of the College Football Playoff prior to the 2014 season, Clemson is 65-3 at home, tied for the highest home winning percentage in the country.”

https://clemsontigers.com/death-valley/

Death Valley Recognition:

Also according to ClemsonTigers.com:

“In 2017, StadiumJourney.com rated Memorial Stadium as having the No. 10 stadium experience in the nation for all sports and No. 1 for college football. In 2023, it was named among 247Sports’ top five fan atmospheres. The facility’s mystique is derived from its many traditions, which date to its opening in the 1942 season, the legendary games and players and Clemson’s corresponding rate of success.”

Such recognition, however, only tells part of the story. There is nothing – nothing – like cheering on the real Tigers in the real Death Valley surrounded by as many as 86,000 of your closest friends!

A Few of the Great Moments in Death Valley:

There have been far too many great moments at Death Valley to list them all here. Here are a few that come to mind – but please add other great moments that I have not included on this:

- September 1942: First game in Death Valley: Clemson wins over PC
- November 1980: First game in “Orange Britches” with wins over #19 Gamechickens
- September 1981: Clemson defeats Defending National Champs #3 UGa
- October 1981: Clemson hangs 82 on Wake in an 82-24 win
- November 1983: Clemson releases record 363,729 balloons – then defeats #11 Maryland
- September 1987: Clemson, down 4, scores safety late against UGa – then, after receiving the ensuing kick, boots game-winning field goal as the clock expires
- November 2009: Clemson blasts “We Will Rock You” while taking down FSU (Spiller rushes for 165 yards)
- November 2015: Clemson goal line stand stops #6 Notre Dame in hurricane-driven torrential downpour
- November 2015: Clemson plays at Death Valley as #1 for the first time in beating FSU - clinches ACC Title Berth (More Clemson home games as #1 to come)
- November 2016: Clemson obliterates Gamechickens to the tune of 56-7 (Mike Williams kind enough to offer piggyback rides to the less fortunate)
- November 2018: Clemson secures another undefeated regular season in win over Chickens

No doubt there have many, many more great moments!

So glad Clemson did not simply put “10,000 seats behind the YMCA.”

86 - Bubba Brown Gained 86 Yards in Interception Returns for Clemson

22

Jun 6, 2024, 12:05 AM
Reply

LB Marlon “Bubba” Brown (1976-1979) was undersized as a linebacker. But, he never let that stop him from being a monster on the field as Clemson was ascending to greatness in the late 1970s. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Bubba Brown always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. The 6-0, 210 lb. linebacker totaled 515 tackles in four seasons, more than any other Tiger in history.

Thanks to his accomplishments, he was one of just three linebackers to be named to the Clemson Centennial Team.”

https://clemsontigers.com/nine-former-greats-to-be-inducted-into-clemson-hall-of-fame/

Of note:
Bubba Brown still holds the record for Clemson Tackles that he set in 1979. Brown’s 515 career tackles is STILL the most any Clemson Tiger has ever recorded: That’s 45 years and counting!!!

Sports-Reference.com also credits Bubba Brown with 4 interceptions for 86 yards (21.5 average). Brown’s stats only tell a fraction of the story of his greatness. Stories after stories online discuss how he dominated one game after another as a Clemson Tiger.

Interestingly, his most high-profile game was one legendary head coach’s first game – and another legendary head coach’s last game. Bubba Brown was one of the stars for Clemson in the 1978 Gator Bowl win over Ohio State (I would say “the Ohio State University,” but since they trademarked the word “the” I will refrain in order to avoid owing any royalty fees). According to Sports Illustrated:

“Bubba Brown was the star of the Clemson defense with 22 tackles. Randy Scott added 16 tackles and Jim Stuckey had 11 to key the Clemson defense.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/looking-back-clemson-ohio-state-1978-gator-bowl

Apparently, Bubba Brown had a close-up view of the play that led to Ohio State HC Woody Hayes’ dismal after that Gator Bowl. According to ESPN:

“Bauman returned his only career interception toward the Buckeyes' sideline, where he was tackled by Schlichter near the feet of Hayes. Clemson linebacker Bubba Brown, who was running right behind Bauman on the return, said he heard Hayes yell at Bauman, "You SOB, I just lost my job!"

Bauman jumped to his feet and looked toward the stands. Hayes pulled the back of Bauman's jersey toward him, then swung his right arm at Bauman's throat.

"You could see the disgust and anger coming off his face," Brown said. "Charlie said, 'What did you do that for?'"

A brief melee ensued between players and coaches from both teams.”

https://www.espn.com/college-football/bowls13/story/_/id/10215217/the-punch-ended-woody-hayes-career

That 1978 Gator Bowl was not the only game where Bubba Brown starred for Clemson. Earlier in 1978, Brown made his presence known in Raliegh – and earned national recognition for it. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“But perhaps #47’s greatest game came earlier in the ’78 season at N.C. State. He went up against Heisman candidate and running back Ted Brown. However, it was Bubba Brown who was the star of the game, holding the Wolfpack running back to just 70 yards rushing on 21 carries as Clemson defeated N.C. State 33-10. The Tiger linebacker had 18 tackles to earn National Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors by Sports Illustrated.”

https://clemsontigers.com/nine-former-greats-to-be-inducted-into-clemson-hall-of-fame/

Another huge game for Bubba Brown:
In November 1978 Clemson went to Maryland to decide the ACC Championship. Clemson led 28-21 late in the game when Brown made a critical stop inside the red zone. According to ClemsonJunkies.com:

“The Terps drove to the Tigers seven, but on third down Clemson’s Bubba Brown stopped Maryland’s Dean Richards for a loss, forcing the Terps to settle for a field goal with 1:56 left in the game that made it 28-24.

Clemson‘s Chuck Rose recovered the following onside kick. Fuller guided the Tigers to a pair of first downs as Clemson was able to run the clock out and win the game 28-24.”

https://clemsonjunkies.com/2020/05/29/flashbackfriday-clemson-wins-one-of-greatest-acc-games-ever/

As always, I enjoy these informative videos from Tiger Pregame Show videos. Special thanks to Scott Rhymer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtllsj9ZRZM

After Clemson:

After playing for Clemson, Bubba Brown apparently went into high school coaching. The Woody Hayes punch in the 1978 Gator Bowl has served as an important reminder for Brown throughout his coaching career. He was coaching high school in Michigan when he was quoted by ESPN about the Hayes incident:

“Brown registered 22 tackles that night against Ohio State and said his lasting memory of the game is how the defense found the fortitude to make the key stop against the Buckeyes. But the Hayes punch also informs Brown's decisions as a high school coach in Michigan.

"If I ever get hotheaded for some reason, I tell myself to cool down because that incident comes to mind," Brown said. "There are certain lines you can't cross."

https://www.espn.com/college-football/bowls13/story/_/id/10215217/the-punch-ended-woody-hayes-career

Of course, the Clemson man shows good sense (unlike that Ohio State guy).

Also of note:
ClemsonTigers.com quoted Bubba Brown with a prophetic message. Clearly, this man was wise beyond his years:

In a book written about the 1978 season, Brown is quoted as saying, “A long time after all of us players are gone, they’ll still be talking about this Clemson season. And I believe it will be remembered as the beginning of something great for Clemson football. We did more than win a conference championship and a bowl game — we laid the groundwork for the people who come after us. We proved that Clemson deserves national recognition!”

https://clemsontigers.com/nine-former-greats-to-be-inducted-into-clemson-hall-of-fame/

Spot on, Mr. Brown! Well said!

South Carolina Highway 86, part of an alternate route to Clemson or Easley, is a 12.1 mile long state highway that runs from the east end at US 25 near Golden Grove and Moonville, to the west end at SC 8 near Powdersville and Easley, going through Piedmont.

Piedmont, South Carolina is a town of 5,000 along the Saluda River in Anderson and Greenville Counties. Native Americans and early settlers called the area the Big Shoals of the Saluda which they used for crossing the river. David Garrison started a grist mill about 1850 at the shoals and called the area Garrison Shoals. Then Henry Pinckney Hammett bought the property for the water power and established a cotton mill in 1876 and named it Piedmont Manufacturing Company and the town became known as Piedmont. Hammett's charter included a railroad. In 1946 the mill was sold to J.P. Stevens and updated. The mill operated until 1977. Other manufacturing companies have located in Piedmont. An early film, The Birth of a Nation, was set in Piedmont. The old Piggly Wiggly in town was like a landmark.
Downtown Piedmont about 1890.
