Per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo sports, SEC & B1G to hold a joint meeting of ADs

in February to discuss an expanded CFP Format. Within the article, "There is discussion of a 14-team model that designates four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten; two each to the ACC and Big 12; one to the best Group of Five champion; and one at-large, intended for Notre Dame if it finishes ranked inside the top 14 (or, if not, the next-highest ranked team after the automatic qualifiers are selected). Officials describe it as a 4-4-2-2-1+1 model, with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye."

Let's just let these two drive CFB off the cliff for the rest of us. 8 of the 14 spots taken by the BIG/SEC is a joke. One step closer to being a playoff of just the B1G and SEC.

those strings. Let’s be honest, there are not 3-4 ACC teams playoff worthy each year. Are there 4 SEC or Big10 worthy of it each year? Heck I doubt it. The playoff format is too big. It will always come down to 2-4 teams that actually have a shot to win the thing.

I do think Phillips had an idea this was coming, thus the reason he openly talked about the change in ACC champ game. It’s the only way to make that weekend work. Otherwise the game is meaningless. Be curious to see if SEC/Big10 follow.

Miami was just as worthy as Alabama, Ole Miss, and S.C., maybe more so of a bid.

Allocating 8 of the 14 spots to the BIG and the SEC is ridiculous!***

If it does, it will mark the end of college football for a lot of people.

The 4 major conferences should get 2 each, the best group of 5 get's one, the rest filled by the highest rated teams left. With the bias for the big, sec, and nd, they will get most of those anyway. Also, why do they insist on byes, it's simple, 4, 8, 16, 32 ...

More guaranteed spots gives the big and sec more guaranteed playoff money. This year it was $4 mil for each team for the 1st round games.

I hate what college football has turned into.

If the SEC and BIG are so good every year then why are they worried about automatic bids.
If they are truly the best teams then the CFP will choose them on their merits.

I agree with you. The byes extends the playoff out further on the calendar then it needs to be. The 1st round of the playoff started 2 weeks after the Conference Championship games. I really don't think byes are necessary and every team that got a bye lost, so it didn't work.

It's rather ironic that the BIG/SEC are making the decisions that will benefit their conferences the most. In this scenario they are proposing, they are receiving $32 million of the 56$ million based on $4 million given to all playoff teams. That number goes up the further they advance. The ACC, Big XII and other conferences are allowing their conferences to become less relevant with each passing season as this nonsense continues.

No auto bids for conference champions. Do away with autos and select the top 12 best teams regardless of Conference!

Don't like it. I think each conference champion should get an automatic bid, then after that the top seeds fill out the 12 teams. Not sure the teams outside the B1G and SEC have much leverage to stop this, but I don't like those two getting 8 automatic bids.

Maybe Yahoo has some insider information on that ball of fire in the sky?

They will be set up in divisions with division winners in a playoff to advance. Like the NFL.

I agree about the 4 conferences but each will be divided into four pods.

Those game deciding titles will be considered the first round of the playoff. Pod players will play one another then the final games of that round will be held at bowl sites along with the final round.

I believe that league will included the 64 teams with the most active fans.

Jim Phillip's "plan" is tied to this idea.

Jan 22, 2025, 1:53 PM

This gives 100% validity to Jim Phillip's idea that the regular season winner skip the championship game. This makes the ACC championship game of 2 vs 3 a play-in game. That might actually garner a little more excitement for a fan base thinking they may be able to win in a matchup of 2 vs 3.

I'm not saying I like it all, it just makes you think JP is just taking the scraps and smiling right now.
