DUI and Reckless Driving are very serious transgressions to those of us that have lost loved ones to irresponsible drivers. A slap on the wrist like this is a slap in the face to the victims and families of these careless/selfish drivers.

Again, if he was "let off the hook" because he was a Clemson athlete, please provide supporting data.

Well, Mr. Schieffelin will be around town for a while yet. Everyone knows who he is and what car he drives. It won't take long to see if he is sincere or not.

was smart and refused field sobriety test and refused datamaster breathalyzer. This had nothing to do with guilt or innocence.
As a previous poster pointed out, all these things do is provide evidence against you to be used at court. Unless you are 100% positive you are innocent (meaning you didnt drink at all, cause you can still be charged with a BAC below limit), I've heard it always in your best interest to not talk, walk, or blow as this just provides evidence against you.
By doing the above, assuming you arent sloppy drunk and maybe borderline, it becomes the cops observations of events vs yours with no concrete evidence other than you refusing tests. Therefore, assuming its your first offense, the judge and police will normally plea down to a lesser charge. He is out legal fees and increased insurance but its not a DUI. Lets not kid ourselves that he is some innocent person being taken advantage of

Yea the City of Clemson Police department is criminal. I was moving my daughter into her apartment a few weeks ago. When I was leaving with a large trailer, I approached a 3 way stop sign that had nothing coming from any direction. I slowed to less that 1 mile an hour, and rolled thru the stop sign to minimize the fuel. Jack ### pulled me over a mile down the road and issued a ticket. While I know I was in the wrong, no one was endangered by what I did.

That's exactly what I was thinking, and I suppose Ian has learned a lesson until the next time bc you can bet everything that you own that if you drive under the influence of anything that alters the brain you will get caught bc doing everything just right while driving is tough enough when straight, much less doing it while intoxicated!!!

Not knowing the details it seems reasonable and a good outcome from Ian’s perspective. Some might think lenient but not enough information to say for sure.

He is lucky he refused. The extra time probably allowed his BAC to come down. An emotional life learning event indeed. Hopefully he has learned.

.... cases like this are handled, and not special treatment for athletes. First offense, I assume. And, he could afford to hire a good attorney.
Now, the question is, did he learn from it or not? Only time will tell.

Yes a “wet reckless” is a common DUI resolution especially if it someone’s first offense and no one got hurt and the person was not aggressive with cops etc. This is a pretty typical outcome and probably set Ian back about $10k with lawyers fees, court fees, increased insurance etc

That is good that he accepted his wrong doing and didn't get charged with the DUI. Now he can focus on getting better each day and hope have an impact especially in a gadget type play or two later in the season.

One of the TigerNet brethren called this before the details of it came out! It was on a related poast. He said that it would be adjudicated down to a reckless driving the day after the event. I have read some prognostications in my day but that was crystal ball scary dead on accurate!!!!!!!!

But you can get a Temporary Alcohol License that allows you to drive for work, Dr appts, attny mtgs and to get groceries as needed. Then if found guilty then you can lose your license for 6mos to a yr. If he didn't test and has attny, most likely his case will be settled out of court and he will plea to a lesser crime like 'Reckless Driving' which has a big fine and jacks your insurance through the roof for 3yrs. It will be a $15k+ mistake basically.

Still has to make some explicit actions in response by rule of the court & irrespective of the football penalties, for what it's worth.
"Dropped" would mean no penalties whatsoever from the court, no classes, no fine, no points lost off his license, etc.

Look
Aug 27, 2025, 9:46 AM

He has to teach 12 separate 1-hour classes on essentially not doing what he did.
He has to pay a fine (plus lawyer fees).
He has to miss the biggest game of the year.
He has to rebuild his name, respect & reputation with everyone around him.
The suggestion that he "may or may not learn from this" seems misguided at best, but the likelihood he & countless others will implicitly learn from it & deliberately use Uber or Clemson's ride program seems inescapable.
Accountability matters, always, & jail time and/or being kicked off the team aren't the only answers for being accountable. Dude put his name on it, now he has to put his name behind it.
