where do you draw the line on driving vs flying? Mine is about a 12 hour drive. When you consider having to get to the airport so early, going thru security, checking your bags, flight time & possible layovers, waiting on your bags, getting a rental car, and all of that crap... you pretty much break even at about a 12 hour drive. And if there are any delays for whatever reason, then driving is a clear winner, not even close. Plus, you can stop whenever you want, stretch your legs, use a clean bathroom, grab something decent to eat, have a smoke, whatever.
It was different "back in the good old days of flying" but nowadays, I avoid flying whenever possible. If I can drive it, I will.

But I also get 6 weeks of vacation that I always end up scrambling to use up in December. If I only had 2 weeks, I’d probably fly more. I guess the only rule of thumb I have is that I’ll rent a car if the trip will be over 1000 miles total. I’ll drive my car to New Orleans, Miami, DC. Anything outside of that circle, I’ll rent a car.

Logical and reasonable. I concur.
Except I just drove 16 hours recently (but drove for other reasons. Flying a family of 5 is cost prohibitive as compared to driving).
If by myself, more around the 9 or 10 hour cross over point.

cannot lay back for comfort because someone behind you finds it offensive... or some 300 pounder squeezes into the seat beside you and mashes you into the window? Yeah, I can do without that donkeycrap.
My GF has family in Crestwood KY and we have done it both ways. Depending on traffic, construction, weather, etc it's about a 8-10 hour drive. And it takes about the same to fly, start to finish.
And we never lose the luggage in our car. And it's stress-free driving. We'll never fly it again.

Depends a little on how much time I am spending at the destination. I’m guessing 12 hours equates to about 700 miles. If I’m driving that far, I would want to stay at least 3 nights before driving back…probably 4. My “day trip” limit (round trip in a single day) would be about 2-3 hours. Above 3 hours requires a night’s stay, with another night for each additional three hours.
Not as young as I used to be. My junior year at Clemson, I drove 21.5 hours straight to South Padre Island. A lot of No Doz and Jolt colas involved. Another time I left Clemson with a few buddies at midnight and drove to Wilmington, DE. Stayed a couple nights and drove back. Wouldn’t want to do that again, either.

is best. Some driving routes are great, some not so great. Most places in the South from Columbia I'm driving. Outside of that... hit or miss.
Flying out of Coot Central is a breeze. From parking across the street from the terminal, walking a block to TSA Precheck and at the gates in 15 minutes or less, it makes that option easy enough. Some decent directs out, and Atlanta and Charlotte deliver the rest. Zen mode is a big plus for everything else that comes with.

I have season tickets for the TIGERS and the Cleveland Browns. Flew back and forth to every game this season with not one flight delayed out of. 10 trips

I fly all the time. It’s not typically a mega-hassle or cluster. Of course, during the holidays, there are often complications and especially this year with nation-wide weather impacts.
For me, it’s about a 25 minute drive/park to the airport. I only need to be an hour early. And I don’t rent cars. So really, anything over 4 hours drive, flying is usually more efficient.
