They can't wait to ride the roller coaster way up in the sky.

If it’s up and going again, that’s good news.

If not, you can always swing by Tweetsie.

At least, there is no active web presence for the property, just a lot of links about it being abandoned. I read that a couple of developers have submitted plans to redevelop the park over the years, and there was even a rumor at one point that Disney was considering buying the property and redeveloping it.

falling after that. The Bass Shoe and Haggar outlets were the only things that survived into the Plaza Fiesta era. The Mexican flea market took up 3/4 of the mall. I especially miss the flea market and the food from Plaza Fiesta. That was actually the best shopping experience since that place opened on day one.

Had my then 2-ish y.o. daughter at the Steeplechase many years ago (she is 16 now, no pigs). Put her down for a bit and turned around to do something, turned back around and she was gone. It couldn't have been more than 10-15 seconds. She had gotten probably 100 yards away, that quickly. Freaked me thefuck out. She was only missing for maybe a minute but it felt like an eternity.

at For What It's Worth while searching for a career gig. I got an interview with TC Sports at Outlet Marketplace and got the job there a few months later. TC Sports was a forerunner of the #####/Academy model based out of Myrtle beach and had locations in outlet malls across the Carolinas. Outlet Marketplace hadn't opened yet, and the interview was conducted in a room that was made out of plastic sheeting hanging from the rafters with a folding table and a few folding chairs, no heat and no air. Once hired, we started building the inside of the store from the ground up and then stocking it. Over the 10 months I worked there, I managed the sporting goods, hunting & fishing, shoes, and exercise equipment sections. I sold exercise equipment to Jim and Tammy Bakker in person. They had no issues paying top retail dollar and my commissions selling to Heritage USA were fantastic, LOL. Also had a deal with the Brooks shoe rep that scored me a free pair for every 10 pairs I sold and left there with about 8 or 9 pairs of brand-new shoes in my closet. Also scored a lot of free gimmes from vendors in the hunting & fishing department like rods, reels, and fishing gear. It was a fun job, but I did not want to be in retail and jumped at the first chance at a better-paying 9-5 weekday gig. My manager liked me, and used to call and offer me part-time work when they had big sales or promotions, so I would jump on those opportunities to make some extra cash. I look back fondly on that job, but glad I was able to get out on a decent career path quickly.

Thanks for letting me tread down memory lane for a few minutes this morning.

Become a bizarre hobby of mine. Went there a ton as a kid and I think I have a news alert for the place so I get any article that comes in.

Just eerily defunct now and would take more money (with a smaller ROI) to reopen it as an amusement park than to just develop it. Lots of good urban explorer videos of the place as it sits with lots of drone footage as well.

Cool “moment in time” place that I have great memories from.

Do you track Land of Oz as well? Saw an interesting story about how some are trying to keep that one alive. I think they open for a few weeks in June, during Halloween and can be rented out as a wedding venue. Kinda neat and creepy at the same time.

One of the more intriguing facts is that the "yellow brick road" isn't painted. The yellow coloring was actually fired into the bricks. The guy that built it had a vision. Just not deep enough pockets.

I used to see a lot of those 'exploring abandoned theme park' videos shot at Oz before someone (sort of) reopened it. I think it used to be a popular high school drinking spot for a while after it was first abandoned.

They had some good rides for little kids and they enjoyed the zoo. Youngest daughter who was about 5 at the time got to hold an 8-foot python (yeah, no pics). They put it on her shoulders and it was so big her knees buckled. Wifey, who hates snakes, could not watch and walked away.

when you grow up on the coast, beach vacations kind of suck because you can go to the beach pretty much any day of the week. So our family almost always did mountain vacations. Ghost Town, Ruby Falls, Rock City, Gatlinburg, Santa Land (?).....all up and down the NC and TN hills was our standard fare.
