Generational split with fanbase implications

For the first time in FOUR generations, not a single graduating member of my wife's family is choosing Clemson.

That's five kids, three who were even offered academic money by Clemson, who are saying no. All live in either SC or GA.

ALL five are going away. Two to Auburn, one to Penn, one to Vandy, one to Rice.

It'll be odd not having the family football text thread blown up by kids in search of tickets for themselves/friends as has been the case for so
long.

But the allure of all that held ZERO sway on this crowd. They have no interest in carrying on those traditions.

Maybe these five kids are an anomaly. But if they arent, brand management has never been as critical to these schools as it is now.

Just is your point just that kids choose where they want now regardless of family history?

Probably, yeah.

That, and the idea that their decision making metrics are so far advanced compared to mine.

I went to UT because that's just what college-bound folks in my family did back then. It was a simple decision. Maybe we were simpletons?

That 49% of Clemson's incoming frosh. students are from out of state is also an interesting stat.

I wonder when it'll tip to 51% (assuming it's possible under the charter).

the next generation of kids may not use the same criteria we used when gauging where to attend school.

This is based on conversations not only within the family, but with our many friends whose kids are making similar choices.

And it speaks to an emerging trend that will affect how universities engage with their communities, and larger fan bases, going forward.

You seem to have mastered a fairly linear way of thinking and communicating. Perhaps this isn't the thread for you.

So the door swung pretty wide when their test scores hit the portals.

Even still, I'd have thought Clemson wouldve been in the mix. It's odd thinking that in 20 years, Clemson maybe might not factor into the family's identity anymore.

Can speak from personal experience. Nobody in my family had gone to college until my parents generation (mom & dad only pursued some postsecondary at local tech college, dad's siblings all went to Winthrop). My generation came along, had an older cousin continue the Wnthrop trend. By time my time came, I explored more of other options. 1 of my aunt's really pushed hard to continue the Winthrop trend since my family had a legacy. However, she pushed so far on it that she turned me off. & when I got my acceptance letter from Clemson (which was my dream school & my grandpa had planted the seed when I was little), I chose to make my own path. Since then, most my younger cousins have done the same.

That really cared what their elders thought. Especially about school. I don't take offense with any Clemson graduate not forcing offspring to go to Clemson. Most kids make their decisions based off friends, boy or girl friends and some stupid reasons like I got to get away.
Our family has graduates from all over. One of my uncles went to a school no clemson and ended up help pioneering the robotic arms used on the international space station. I have a grandfather with doctorate that worked on the Manhattan project. I have some really cool stories of family members who graduated non clemson that are not tards!
I just take issue to ur op and saying no one in ur family would consider clemson even for free! Well f u and f that statement. No one here cares.

And my OP didn't say Clemson offered those kids free rides. I said they offered them money. Slow down a little and read the words, don't just scan them.

I do honor the fact that your ancestors made such valuable contributions to the American - and global - scientific communities.

My youngest daughter only looked at and applied to SEC schools because they offer a ton of out of state money for test scores and valedictorians and they are the kings of the sports world. She’s taking a full 4 year ride to Bama. Sometimes it’s more than legacy. Go tigers and Roll Tide!
