That's sad to hear....

But a sign of the changing times when it comes to printed medium and the rise of social media. Now, I guess you can find pretty much whatever you want online without shelling out $85 for a yearbook.
I still have all of my TAPS from 87-91 and my kids have enjoyed looking through those, as well as those of my dad from when he was there 54-58, and one of my grandfathers before that. Kids of these subsequent generations will miss out on that. Social media and all that won't be around forever. The yearbooks pretty much can be.

Only went to Clemson for one year - 1957-58. Still have my copy of TAPS! Those students that don't want a hard copy now - they will love to have one in about 20-30 years! If you are currently a student at Clemson - please get a copy. You will be very glad later that you decided to do so.

2 years to decide to then print a quarterly paper magazine? I'm assuming it's paper.
Annuals do serve a purpose that a collection of personal Facebook posts cannot.
Seems like this is a great business model. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TreeRing

So po-dunk hi schools and tiny private schools can figure out ways to maintain the continuity of yearbook annuals but Clemson cannot? Oh, Taps is a form of media and that means at some point it has been hijacked by the ####### coalition who just dont get it and think everything is better with change. Just give me back my Orange and White please Iptay.

Surprisingly, this is my second post in two days...and tenth in 10 years. Sometimes you just need to address nonsense.
I'm pretty annoyed that you brought politics to a sports site, but since you did I'll call out the ignorance.
Since you are obviously not a "#######", I'll assume your a conservative small government guy. What part of carrying on a publication that makes no money and has a ever shrinking customer base is liberal? I can only assume that you want the school to provide funding to keep this publication above water. Yup, sounds small government.
Either keep politics away from these sites, since many of us come here to get away from that....or be intelligent enough to make an argument that fits your politics. The former is preferable since the latter seems unlikely.

I lost my HS yearbooks in a fire but found them online so I can still look up folks and refresh my memories before the reunion.

I think that the yearbook lost its luster due to Clemson's size. When it was a few thousand people it made sense, but I graduated in 2016 and personally never even bothered with TAPS. I may regret that one day, but I didn't really want to pay for a yearbook that consisted of 95% people I have never seen in my life. But that's just my own opinion. I never got one so I don't even know what the layouts are like or what is included, so I may be wrong.

I'm not even sure. I think it did because they always hung posters telling people where to go for pictures but in my 4.5 years at Clemson I never took a TAPs picture.

What's Important About TAPS?
Nov 9, 2017, 2:14 PM
[ in reply to Re: General Update: Clemson will end TAPS yearbooks after 109-year run ] |
|
Ok, I think you just touched on a point that highlights what may be happening with declining interest in TAPS. You said "....95% people I have never seen in my life." Facebook and other social sounding boards have made the user the center of the "self universe" with everybody else on the outside looking in to even the most minute details of a single individual.
TAPS is a collection of the events and celebrations at Clemson in a given year. It doesn't focus on the individual but it does give us a "snapshot" of where we were when we were a part of the Clemson experience becoming a Tiger. All these things taking place around us are what's important and a class photo is evidence of your place in that part of Clemson history. You would REALLY value that in future years. Besides, knowing only 5% of the people will make it all very relevant to you one day.

How sad and a disappointing commentary on so many traditions just not important to this generation. We are a three generation Clemson family and have all of our yearbooks. There are two editor members of the yearbook staff and one editor-in-chief in the family. It was a great experience. Love being able to look up classmates and other event pictures. Who will keep numerous editions a magazine for 70 years?

I still have my "Seminoles" from the Univ. of Florida, pre and post WW2. "Seminole" may seem strange to some of you but this was when FSU was named Florida State College for Women (FSCW) and before they had a football team. All of my pre- WW2 friends are gone (some lost during WW2) and most of my post- WW2 friends are gone. Lots of memories when I look through those pages. Glad I still have them.

Sad...I still have mine '85-'88. Magazines and social media sites just aren't the same. I guess the students stopped buying TAPs because they either didn't like the product and/or saw no benefit to it. Hate to see another Clemson tradition be put to rest because of lack of support. 20(+) years from now there will probably be quite a few Generation Z alumni that wish they had bought a yearbook...
By the way - you can find all the editions of TAPs and year books (published before TAPS) from 1899 to 2012 here:

and only about 10% are buying TAPS so it is obviously no longer wanted. I have mine from 1987-1992 and enjoy the shots from sporting events and other things that I cannot get - or couldn't have gotten even if social media had been around. I didn't have sideline or court side access where some of the shots are from.

Why bother with a yearbook?
On a side note, it is interesting how the RINGS now cost a cool grand+ and they even have a fancy ceremony for those.

They do still have the ring ceremony. It's had some issues over the last 2-3 years because of the Littlejohn remodeling. I missed the ceremony because it was in the T.Ed Garrison arena and it took 2 hours to get from Campus to the arena because of the unplanned traffic. Very poorly done, but I believe they've resolved those issues.

The ring ceremony doesn't go back as long as you may think. I got my ring in '87 (I think) and there was no ceremony.
I do hate to see Taps go away. I have all of mine and my dad's. I may get the final edition.

Looks like I'm not alone. Never even had my TAPS picture made while I was there, 88-92. Even back then enrollment was large enough that I didn't recognize 99% of the people (looking at my wife's copy of TAPS, she was on yearbook staff in High School so never thought twice about buying it)
