Are people more separated by race, or socioeconomics?
Sample: Do you have more in common with someone of the same race but a different socioeconomic background, or someone of a different race but within the same income demographic?

My best friend is African American, ex-Army, played basketball at Morehouse, was state champ in HS at high jump (VA),has an MBA and requires me to give him 3 a side on the links. Has a black belt. Was my boss at 1 time as well. Born on the fourth of July 76 years ago.
Nicest guy you would ever want to be around, and someone who could kick enny of your butts before you knew what hit you.
What's your point?

But I would tend to agree.

There are, obviously, experiences and perspectives that come with race that income status can't neutralize (I think of the black Army officer, in uniform, who got pepper sprayed by a racist cop), but in terms of pragmatic commonalities, I have far more in common with my black peers in a relative similar income/professional status than I do with poor whites.

That is why some people oppose Affirmative Action based on race.

For your sample, I'm probably all over the board on this. It really just depends on the individual. One of the reasons I have enjoyed living in larger cities - you have all kinds in close proximity. Just look at our area for example. You have lower end apartments, 'little pink houses' neighborhoods like mine, and what I would call mini castles all within a walk from each other. I don't think the answer to your sample question is an 'either, or'.

But I also think those things can often go hand in hand, depending on where you live and your age.
Definitely now it's socioeconomic given my neighborhood community and the people here, but that's just me. I consider growing up, however, that we were separated by both because in my hometown, that was usually a common factor.

Great question, and it's really hard to say.

I have the most in common with people like me - middle class whites. However, I have always had 3 distinct friend groups: Lifelong/school friends, work friends, and neighbors. All races and socioeconomic groups have been included, at some point, in each group.
I think it's interesting that Thomas Sowell has pointed out that black culture in America largely comes from the poor southern white redneck culture. Still, I think history has probably made the racial divide more difficult to overcome than socioeconomic differences alone, at least as much as we can separate the two. Personally, I can get along with just about anybody who isn't an a-hole, and I even make an effort with them, up to a point. As a society, we've got to do better.

and around socioeconomic classes, which is not uncommon and can be eye-opening and life-changing, while race is fixed.
