He didn't give specifics, but in his presser...

....Dabo alluded to it was something that the LBs do pre-snap to call out defensive signals. Said they had been doing it all year. But, in pre-game the refs told him that if they did it it would be flagged.
He didn't say it in an effort to claim the refs were biased against Clemson, merely to point out that there is no uniform standard, but each conference has its own variations of the rules.

Bret,
I think we have gotten called on it once or twice previously - delay of game on the defense.

He didn't elaborate, but it sounded like something the SEC doesn't allow LBs to do but the ACC does (pre-snap). If Clemson did it, it would be a delay of game.

They threatened to call delay of game penalties on our linebackers

for something that they had been doing all season. I'm not sure what they were actually doing that would deserve a delay of game call.

If that’s the case then it’s further proof that officiating needs to be handled by the NCAA (no matter how incompetent they are) rather than the conferences. It makes no sense that the rules change when you play out of conference.

Yes, smoking dope in a car in a closed graveyard with a stolen gun at 2am is frowned upon in the ACC. In the SEC it’s just another Monday morning.

It sounds more like interpretation of the rules rather than a different rule. Probably along the same lines of when a DL shifts to the left or right isn't called but when they all do it in a sudden and synchronized fashion it can get called for inducement and delay of game.
I agree it should have been noted to the staff earlier in the week.
I am also for a unified set of refs for all D1 football and they rotate regionally. The NCAA has a head of officials who grades them and the best crews get to call the playoffs. Just like the the NFL model.
I wonder if Ron Cherry is up for a desk job these days?

Mafah did have control of the ball when both knees hit the ground, he didn't lose control of the ball until the ground caused the ball to get loose and that was after both knees were on the ground, very bad call, it was a steal allowed by the refs!!!
If the rule is still, you're down when your knee touches the ground, or the rule that the ground can't cause a fumble. If those two rules are the rules, the ref made the wrong call bc both happened in that play before the ball got loose!!!

That problem would be easy to solve, just have refs from both conferences to officiate the game so they can talk about the way the rule is determined in their conference. If they are officiating on an ACC team field, go with what they've been doing in their conference and vice versa if they were playing on a SEC school field...

If true it's an awfully cavalier, surprising game day officials are granted laissez faire latitude with rule enforcement and rules in general-

Yeah, he said that in his presser today. The head ref told him if our linebackers did something they normally do pre snap it would be delay of game. It was something they had been doing all year. These were SEC refs and they had been instructed by their league to call a penalty when it happened. Basically, rules vary conference to conference. Dabo was saying there should be a national standard.

I am totally unaware and naive - I though there was a national standard already. My bad.

That actually makes sense.
It doesn't make sense that it is that way (there should be a national standard). But it does make sense looking back at penalties called on Clemson in previous years. I remember the D line having all kinds of shifts until "disconcerting signals" was called. Also during a home game against south carolina back in 2018 I think.
I don't know if that crew was SEC or not.

No. It had to do with simulation of the start of a play. It’s called differently in the SUC. What we get away with is a flag.

Questionable calls. Thought it odd really. Every 50/50 call seemed to go the other way. And how many holds did SC get. Not sure the refs knew much about that penalty either. Got 76 in the backfield laying all over our dude like he is pinning him down. Ref is behind the whole deal and just lets it go.
Was Wesco in or out of bounds? The big board made it appear that he was in? Just knew we would win that call. Nope. Could not tell live or on the big board on Mafah’s fumble.
I am not an excuse maker and we should or could have won that game regardless but dang something seemed off.

I’d also love an explanation for why Ga Tech had to deal with an SEC crew away at Georgia while we had an SEC crew home against SCar. Both crews influenced the outcome of those games. The ACC is ####### for letting these things happen.

Believe it or not the refs actually said Sammy Brown can only play the first 3 quarters, so Dabo was left scrambling.
