I did some further digging into the Kinard situation, and a lot of it came last night because there was a staff Christmas party that went late. But here’s what I have……I reached out to Terry Kinard, and I was told if I had any questions to reach out to Coach Dabo Swinney. We talk to Dabo today at 11, and I am sure he will be asked.
So let’s start with a few of the things I’ve been told from the other side. Perhaps the best account is from a parent I know whose son was there when it all went down. His son and the younger Kinard was part of a group doing accountability runs – I was told there were a couple of scholarship players and three walk-ons.
But I also want to mention this – in the Kinard post, they said the younger Kinard had made the decision to leave, and Dabo was mad about it and mad about college football in general (here is where my opinion seeps in, but that seems like a weird flex to me. Like, you need to throw that in there to prove why Dabo was angry and your son got picked on? I don’t know). But no one out there knew the younger Kinard was leaving. From the people I’ve talked to, that came as a surprise.
So the gassers are run, and the group barely completes them, and according to the parent of one of the kids, Dabo did what coaches do…..he lit into them. Told them they needed accountability. They needed to prove they would be there next year, and he was thinking some of them would be gone. No one was singled out. The next day they all show back up for accountability runs except for one. And when they called to check on his whereabouts, they were told he had quit.
This morning, I get a text from two different HS coaches who have been at practices (they get bored this time of year), and one of them said something that I wondered about…..as you’ve seen in our photos and videos, Dabo is on the mic during practice. He’s the hype man. Everyone on every field hears what he is saying. These coaches heard nothing.
I want to reiterate, I don’t know what happened. There is no film or videos. I posted this to just get some further information out there.

whose kid was yelled at along with others for not giving 100% at practice decided to take a shot at Dabo's character.
You can question a lot about Dabo as far as portal use, loyalty to senior players, etc, but you'd better have some hard evidence when you start attacking his character because it has never been questioned.

Yep back in the day the coach would chew on that butt, and you took it and got better or you quit. Sure as heck was not going to go crying to my dad.
I like to hear the coaching staff demanding accountability. That’s how the real world works. Get used to it.

What disappoints me the most is Kinard airing it publicly like he did. Any parent of a Clemson football player would have the ability to talk to Dabo in person. Especially a former player like Kinard was at Clemson. Be a man an talk to the person you are attacking one on one!

The first question I always ask is, "Did you talk to the teacher directly about your concern?"
This usually takes care of about 90% of it.

Agreed parents are too willing to fight their kids fights now instead of letting them grow and learn from different expierences. There's a time and a place to step in, getting called out for effort is not one of those times.

Terry Kinard’s act said wayyy more about himself than it did about Coach “Sweeney”.
Sad circumstances. Former player and national champion who should be a legend at Clemson has just really tarnished his own legacy.
And he probably messed up his kid’s chances of playing anywhere else. What coach would want to deal with this crap?

I won't say the name since it was posted on a private message board, but a player from the 1981 National Championship team had this to say last night (summary).
Players from 40+ years ago think Clemson still owes them something. Guys that have never contributed to IPTAY or any other associations. Have never given their time to local Clemson club or alumni events. Those players constantly think their entitled to preferential treatment such as tickets, parking, and other benefits.
I would post what he posted word for word but like I said it was on a private message board that requires a paid subscription.

So what I am hearing is that he didn’t and wasn’t giving 110% and Dabo was trying to push to see if he really wanted it. Obviously he didn’t want to be coached hard or put in the effort

Athlon, Outkick, and On3 are all running articles accusing Dabo of "abusive behavior." Wonder if they will bother actually looking into this, or just leave it as "Dabo is a mean man who is only about himself?"

If I remember correctly, Kinard had exceptional receiver abilities but he was contact adverse. He shied away from contact and even went out of his way to avoid contact. He could have been even better if he had the "football" mentality.
It sounds like his son may have had some of the same traits not giving 110%.

The kid was on the team for one reason, his daddy. His high school recruitment self written bio talks about daddy playing in the NFL first thing. The kid didn't belong on the team and Dabo's mistake was trying to please TK. Now the soft kid is crying and daddy can't stand it.

1) Someone’s dad had to do the talking for a young man who should have addressed it head on & in person if he felt he was being singled out.
2) That dad put his comments out on social media, instead of speaking directly to the person he was upset with after only getting his son’s side of the story.
Coaches yell at players every fricken week. They try and break the “me and I” mentality and change it to a “us and team” mentality. If you don’t like it then pick a different sport, or pick a coach who doesn’t yell and demand accountability! Good luck & god bless the Kinard’s.

Here is my take. Dabo was hard on them, the kid quit because he was already over it all anyway, then he had to make some BS up to his Dad because he didnt want to look bad. He wants his Dad to be proud. Dad goes online defending his son because he loves him so much etc. It just got out of hand. He never thought his Dad would go online and go all scorched Earth. That is what I think happened.
This is part is just a stretch, but maybe there was some booze involved? Maybe Terry isnt doing that great in life and he is emotional? Who knows?

exaggerated (or flat made up) what happened, to such a degree that TK felt it justified a “public breakup” with Clemson, I would be absolutely infuriated if I were TK. YEARS of goodwill, tarnished.
I’m not saying that happened. I have no idea (although the more we hear from the practice, the more I think this is a Clemson Legend’s son trying to justify to his dad that he’s leaving Clemson).

As a parent and former coach, I had a simple rule

If you’re upset about something, DO NOT talk to the coach or post anything on social media until 24 hours has passed unless it’s an extreme emergency. Gives time for cooler heads to prevail and a chance to not say or do something you’ll regret later.

We are all making the assumption, but to clarify, was the younger Kinard the one that did not show up the next day?

Fire always keeping us informed.
On a side note did FM attend practice since he’s a high school coach?

I was skeptical about it from the get-go. This seems to confirm what I suspected to be the case.
Both my sons play football and basketball--pretty darn good athletes---but they WORK. They work hard. They are practicing this week in scrimmages even though there is no official practice---that's dedication. They even have a practice scheduled on Christmas Eve. On their own. They are leaders of a core group that wants to win--and they work. Sprints, weight training, stretching, you name it, they do it. And guess what? That group of kids starts. Go figure.
Over the years, I've seen other parents go ballistic when their kid doesn't start, doesn't come off the bench, gets pulled, etc. so I've seen countless examples of what I call "helicopter" parents who just hover over their kid's every move...and when things don't go their way, they lose it. Literally. There is a sense of entitlement with some parents and their kids---they don't put in the work, skip practice, don't put in the hours of conditioning, weight training, etc. but expect to start Day 1. That isn't how anything works in real life.

This sounds like more and more of the trend. My father was on his town schoolboard for 40 years and chairman for 20 of that 40. He told me the trend was like this. When he first started when a kid did not perform or misbehaved the school just disciplined them right then and there. Then they had a change and they had to call parents before administering discipline. 99 out of 100 parents would ask, "Why are you calling me about this?" Then they had to call in parents so the parents could discipline their child. Most parents were so irate with their kid that the school ended up trying to protect the kid a little bit. By the time he retired if a kid got in trouble he would have parents come into the school board meeting looking for a fight because their kid could do no wrong. No matter what their kid did they were going to fight to make sure their child received zero discipline whatsoever.
So it sounds like this boy (certainly not a man) needed his mommy and daddy to come in and prevent their child from having any discipline (accountability runs) applied to him. They will probably go to his Mcdonald's job interview with him if he can get that interview.
I certainly hope no other team wants that kind of problem.
