FSUs marketability vs Clemsons

Aug 7, 2023, 11:03 AM

I would be curious where others stand . If I am being completely honest I think FSU is more marketable to both SEC and BI8 . However, Clemson is the superior academic organization. I just think that location gives it the edge. Others honest opinions ?

FSU gets more "bandwagon" fans nationally than Clemson if they're playing good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that was true during the B Bowden era...

Aug 7, 2023, 1:25 PM

As a long time Clemson fan it's difficult to decipher & compare bandwagon #s between CDS & BB eras. It's not typically the first inclination to look another fan of the same school critically. But recency bias would favor us as well as having significantly greater success in a 3rd of the time. Significantly may be a strong word but it took BB nearly 30 years to win 2 Nattys(1 by AP, 1 early BCS)and he didn't have to face CFP's 2 game gauntlet at seasons end to do so. In 1993 had the luxury of playing the title
game in Florida and enjoyed favorable AP voters who looked over a ND loss the eventual #2 in the final AP poll.
I haven't accounted for Jimbo's end of the era BCS Championship or Winston's Heisman Trophy as factors that would attract more trend addicted casuals w/ remedial levels of intelligence and awareness. Joining the "front running seasonal(football only)FSU" fandom is an idea that this kind of brainless zombie would unfortunately likely embrace. Gd it I've got sh!+ to do yesterday and I can't shut the ep up. I gotta taper the drug usage maybe lean harder on the alcohol

How is FSU more marketable? Bigger alumni base? Clemson seems marketable to both IMO while FSU seems more just SEC. Clemson is actively going for AAU status, which may be telling???

FSU is also going for AAU status and is closer than we are to it. They nearly got it last year. FSU doesn't take a backseat to Clemson in academics.

I initially did not think this was true but was surprised when I looked at the US New & World Report rankings of Top Public Universities and saw that FSU is ranked #19 and we are ranked #31.

Clemson has hands down been more successful for the past 8 or more years now. But they have alot of alumni and do have alot of hype when there is hype.

that stint in 90's under Bowden looms large in

Aug 7, 2023, 11:19 AM

minds of fans. They are more watched than Clemson. They have two in state rivals. Large talent pool in state. Bigger school. We still have a losing record against them.

Clemson matters more than 6-7 teams in the SEC or B1g, but I think FSU has more appeal. More importantly, they have a law school, in a litigious state so I think they can defeat ACC grant of rights or at least make ACC conference officials miserable.

I've heard this repeatedly and think it's really moronic. First, what does having a mediocre law school mean? Every single college has attorneys on the pay roll and hire outside counsel who are actual litigators. Florida State having a ###### law school means nothing. Have you seen the lawyers employed by the conferences and NCAA? Second, even if it were a good law school, professors are not really lawyers. They rarely if ever practice, and just research and teach. A counsel who hires its law schools professors to sue should be fired for malpractice.

I see a lot of misconceptions about FSU in the discussions on here...

FSU is making strides academically, and in the last few admission cycles has been very selective. I see posters complaining about how hard it is for their kids to get into Clemson...UF and FSU are much more competitive for admission than Clemson. Don't disparage FSU academics. They are making fast progress.

That said, neither Clemson nor FSU are AAU schools. The B1G schools turn up their noses at both in terms of academics, and both would place about the same academically in the SEC as we do in the ACC. There is a pretty large spread in the SEC between the top academic schools and, say, Scar and the Mississippi schools. But the top is pretty lofty with Vandy and UF.

It is also a widely held misconception that FSU is loaded with athletic $. Not the case at all. Only in the mid-late Bowden years did athletic giving ramp up due to FB success. But it never has been, and never in the foreseeable future will be, close to UF in terms of athletic booster money. It goes way back, but the history as a women's college and the long tradition of "bread winners" going to UF and not FSU still has an impact on giving all these years later. FSU has always had a higher female student population and alumni base than male. And that does affect athletic giving.

I just don't see Clemson or FSU being a good for in the B1G. I honestly believe our only long-term hope is the SEC, barring some larger reorganization of big time college football. And that Grant of Rights deal could be our undoing. I HATE the way that administrators from UNC have directed the path of the ACC into potential, if not likely, disaster. And I think UNC and UVa have the best shot at B1G of all the ACC schools.

BTW, my views on FSU and UF are based on my perspective as dad to a recent FSU student athlete, and a couple of kids at UF.

still recall hearing "high school stadium" chant at 1989 FSU

1

Aug 7, 2023, 11:48 AM

Clemson away game. I mean their facilities were worse than some in the ACC in 1989. Bowden built FSU from ground up.

LOL at UF being considered "lofty." I don't disagree with your premise. Clemson should stop expanding and become more selective if it wants AAU status. But there is an enormous gap of prestige within the AAU. No one thinks UF is truly that prestigious.

I'm glad you're proud of your kid. But "top 5 public university" is not a thing. I think Lisa Simpson said it best. "Anything that's the 'something' of the 'something' isn't really the 'anything' of 'anything.'" There are very few colleges that are actually prestigious, especially on a national level. The Ivies, MIT, Stanford, Duke, Chicago, Georgetown, Berkeley, and maybe a handful of others. No one is looking at Florida on a resume and whistling. It's the best school in Florida but its pull does not extend past there. The fact that you have to try to convince us is proof of that.

Re: FSUs marketability vs Clemsons

You miss the point entirely, don't you?

We're talking about academic standing and reputation among schools in conferences involved in big-time athletics- this is about sports and conference affiliation.

You are posting schools that have nothing to do with big-boy football. You're way off topic.

Maybe start over reading the thread from the top.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we're limiting our opinion by specifying that...

Aug 7, 2023, 1:38 PM

the only concern is the TV audience brought in please consider the B1G fans who would watch Clemon VS any B1G team over FSU vs any B1G team. FSU ain't all that on the football field. Beating Clemson would be a huge step toward making the B1GCCG.

If we're not limiting our position on this then we might want to consider the prestige which Clemson brings to a conference. We add another top 10 team to the conference resume. That means something in when the POC meets and selects teams for the playoff. No offense to our house Seminole but FSU ain't all that when it comes to the last decade of football.

Qualifier: I fully expect FSU to get back in the saddle wearing war paint and slaughtering tribal enemies but I'll need to see it to confirm I'm right.

All this talk of TV audiences cripples the speculation of just how much any other conference would love to add Clemson to its rolls, imo.

Good lord the tuition is much less at Florida State than Clemson! Those in-state students in Florida get a deal. I think I’ve read before that the university of Florida is also that cheap. No wonder they are so hard to get into! Everyone in Florida is applying. I have read that UF is a highly ranked school for a public school but the only school in the SEC I would covet a degree from is Vanderbilt. The ACC has more academic schools that are appealing IMO. I would never make it at any because I didn’t care for reading or studying much 😳 It took me 5 years at Clemson due to being a screwball.
