FSU prez throws the gauntlet down.

Aug 2, 2023, 5:19 PM

I haven't watched the video of the board meeting. I'll try to do it later today.

But, the president didn't make this statement was not made without everyone involved being on board with it.

"I would have to say that my current assessment of the situation after very deep analysis is that I believe FSU, at some point, will have to very seriously consider leaving the ACC unless there was a radical change to the revenue distribution."

Based on what I'm reading today about the BOT meeting along with what I heard yesterday in the interview with the BOT chair, I am convinced that the FSU administration has a plan, is convinced the plan will work, and is in the process of executing it as I type.

I have no idea what the details of the plan are. But, university presidents don't just say something as serious and definite as this off the cuff.

Here is one article about the meeting.

Thanks for sharing.
I see no possible way for the ACC to generate another 25-30 million per team.
Someone deserves a sharp kick to the groin for locking the conference in for such a long period.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everyone at FSU agrees.

Aug 2, 2023, 5:40 PM

That is why the president made the comment he did. The FSU brass sees there is no way to stay in the ACC and close the revenue gap.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Isn't that already considered a given? Who expects the ACC

Aug 2, 2023, 5:47 PM

to come with that kind of money? Everything I see from the FSU BOT meeting (I didn't listen either) is very old news. I'm not at all sure they have a plan, otherwise they would be at the execution stage now, ready to to announce something (like where and when they are going). Doesn't sound like they are anywhere close to making such an announcement.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They did say out of ACC within 12 months

That made it very, very clear.

I haven't seen that specific quote. I heard words to the

effect of "if we want to be out in 12 months we need a plan now" - which suggests there is no such plan. Even the Chair of the BOT yesterday sounded like he didn't know the payouts from the SEC/BIG - like he'd have to see what that would be. I don't know, maybe they have a great plan and are playing 4D chess, but it's sounding to me like they are just bit***** and moaning, and have no plan other than hopium. I guess we'll find out soon - if they have a tight plan they will be announcing their ACC departure by Aug 15th.

Aug 2, 2023, 7:22 PM

That comment. That doesn’t mean they will not be playing an ACC schduke maybe 12 months after that because it takes time to completely unravel such matters, but everyone now knows that FSU is not hanging around in the ACC and they are looking to accelerate it quick, fast and in a hurry! Their intentions are clear to all involved. No secret and no beating around the bush.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The point is FL, Bama, UGA, TN all will not have to…

Aug 2, 2023, 7:18 PM

Raise $450 million from the boosters just to keep coaches and facilities and operations competitive. They will get that much more above FSU and Clemson and any ACC team over the course of 10 years. And by not having to rely on the boosters to send them $$, the boosters can instead put all that $$ towards NIL payouts to secure recruits. It creates a massively UN level playing field that pretty much relegates any SEC team to be no better than Wofford competitively over a period years if left to remain this way.

And that is the reality. It is an existential threat to not only football but the Title 9 sports too because championship caliber football dries the $$ revenues to fund the other sports at a championship caliber level too. These are facts.

And it only gets worse and worse over time, so putting off action is not going to help, it is actually going to hurt even more.

The time to act is now. Do not wait to stem the bleeding. Face the reality and act now, like a grown ### adult.

Aug 2, 2023, 6:11 PM

The portion of meeting about leaving ACC starts at about the 39 minute mark.

It is clear that the board is fully behind the president, AD and chair of the board in leaving the ACC ASAP.

One trustee even mentioned the goal should be to announce it by 8/15 this year, and if that is not possible then certainly in the next 12 months.

Another mentioned "The other schools in the conference ought to be thinking the same way."

Several people mentioned that Title IX sports cannot be financially supported if FSU remains in the ACC.

Chair of BOT said, "We can get back together with more information very soon....We'll be back with you shortly."

Again, all of that could have been said last year - nothing

said has changed. Either yesterday and today is theatre to appease the fanbase or it's a somewhat lame attempt to pressure ESPN to open the checkbook. Otherwise, there is no reason for these public outbursts. Honestly, it's starting to look quite desperate.

This is obviously very, very serious. I have never, ever heard a school President, COB, AD speak like that about a conference. Its always “ we love such and such a conference and we are committed and want to make things great.” I heard a lot of that from the Pac 12 (9) presidents. The only time you hear this is when things are extremely dire, or they are already on their way out. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Absolutely agree that F St has a plan!

This is nothing less than FSU, and soon Clemson, hanging a sign up in the window for prospective buyers from the SEC and BIG. As long as there is a market (two bidders) the two schools have some bargaining power. The only question is does the SEC really go big time and cut two schools (Vandy and Carolina) to make a more attractive TV product?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

aah, like the cut SC & Vandy comment!

Aug 2, 2023, 7:18 PM

What that would do to crush their big SEC fanbase!!

Re: FSU prez throws the gauntlet down.

I’m trying to figure out the purpose of this meeting. The President and the Board know each other’s positions. No need to “disclose” them in a public meeting. Serious discussion of conference movement would more likely be held in Executive Session. The probable explanation is this was “staged” for a specific purpose. It was very intentionally public. So who are they talking to?

1. Are they telling the fan base what they want to hear? Not likely. It honestly would serve no purpose to do so.

2. Are they trying to put pressure on ESPN? Maybe, but they didn’t need a public meeting to do that. I’m sure they could get ESPN’s attention in private discussions.

3. A message to the ACC? Again, maybe, but I doubt it. Why do it publicly?

4. Are they sending signals to other conferences they are interested in looking around? Doubtful. Through 3rd party mediators, the SEC and BIG are well aware of their leanings.

5. Is this step number ??? in the process to exit the ACC? This seems the most logical explanation. Perhaps they have been advised of the need to make public statements detailing why they feel compelled to change conferences in order to protect themselves and their future conference from a legal standpoint.

All I know is everything said today in that Board meeting was intentional, rehearsed, and served a purpose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They have to hold a public meeting and put it out there 1st

Aug 2, 2023, 7:30 PM

Before they then draft a document stating officially the intention of the university to leave the ACC by X date certain. This is a prerequisite step based on their by-laws in order to consider it “legal”. They rushed this discussion in a board meeting so they can do the next steps by 8/15. The timing of this is seemingly impromptu discussion is ominous.

I have zero insight on these dealings but I wonder if the ACC (or maybe just FSU) is putting pressure on ESPN for renegotiation, especially if Fox is really trying to make a takeover move.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The FSU board are buffoons

1

Aug 2, 2023, 7:27 PM

and an embarrassment to the ACC.

Apparently none of them have mortgages, car loans or business loans. FSU signed what is commonly called a contract.

Ironically, I think FSU has what is called a law school. Maybe the board could check in with them before holding pressers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They have done their due diligence and now are acting…

Aug 2, 2023, 7:59 PM

because all contracts can be broken. It just requires a settlement. TBH if I were a stakeholder I would be asking why in the heck did they sign that GOR with that long of a time horizon in the first place?! I still have not heard that explained by Clemson, FSU nor anybody! To me, that is more puzzling than them trying to get out now. What they see as the problem now makes total sense… finally!

Aug 2, 2023, 8:00 PM

He's unhappy.

So what?

Everyone knew it.

Making a public statement doesn't accomplish anything.

If they can't get out of the ACC GOR they aren't going anywhere.

Sure, they could try to leave and have the ACC take them to court.

No reason to think FSU would win a court case.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They think they can get out of it… gotta try regardless***
