Would slander or demean a young person for making a decision that is lawful and seeks to get the best paying job possible in the power 4 college football industry.
Would you slander your friend's youngster for getting the market value for his skills?
We are better than demeaning those youngsters who choose to play for another team. Wish them luck if they considered Clemson and let that be our response to not being able to or wanting to compete in the current market that is willing to pay more than we for the top talent. But that means we MUST have the BEST EXPERIENCED coaches available to develop what talent we do get.

I think it conflicts with the idea that players love their school the way the fans do. People don't want to believe that. You'll hear about how players from a few years ago were different - had more integrity and commitment. People want to ignore that those players didn't have the financial options which are available today.

I think that is a good response. Had past players had the opportunity to get market value for their talent, I suspect many who chose Clemson would have gone to who was willing to pay more.
Great insight on your part.

They commit to a school that fits them and they would love to attend . Then a school like Thug U with a coach like Kirby comes along and simply buys the player to play for them . Then the ThugU fans do chest bumps in the mirror because their coach did NOTHING more than purchase a championship.

So the player finds the perfect fit, a school he woulud love to attend but then Kirby comes along and makes him take money to play for UGA? Is that how it works in your life....you find the perfect job or situation but someone comes along and makes you take money to change your mind?

The shift is that being a football player was not a job. Being a student was the job. Now football players are no different to me than the groundskeeper that takes care of the field. I'm sure there are plenty of groundskeepers out there too.

Since Dabo doesn’t “play the game” they throw their hate toward the player.
If Dabo ever changed his stance or actions on the issue, those same fans would change theirs on a dime because they can’t think for themselves.

This is exactly the problem, the incompetence of the NCAA allowed this mess to just be dropped on everyone with out any framework or agreed upon rules, blame them not the kids. It’s making professional football players without professionalizing the organization surrounding it. Think about if the NFL had wide open year round free agency and no salary cap every year, it’d be madness and the league would fall apart.
The NCAA is scared of the courts, states are making up laws one by one, nothing is level or clear, tampering is rampant and unenforceable. The only thing that will bring an end to this insanity is a breakaway league. Start fresh from the NCAA with a collective bargaining agreement between the players and organizations (formally known as schools) with minimum contract terms and actual penalties for things like tampering

I agree there is no reason to slander or demean these recruits. However there are some people like me that think a full ride 4 year scholarship is still pay enough for these “student athletes”. Some of us do not want the college game to turn into minor league football. Sometimes the future is not always better just because more money is available at another school. Lastly a commitment is a commitment, and once you make a commitment you should stand by it and not keep looking for a better deal.

If one views this as a personal issue and not a business decision, that commitment takes on a different meaning. I now view all of these top recruits as making business decisions. The only binding business decision is a legal contract in writing which we don't currently have. Not sure how we get thst.

I really don’t separate my business decisions from my personal decisions. I think they both reflect on character. I never criticize these young players for reopening their recruitment, but if it is done strictly for money, I think it does reflect on their priorities.

Some strange and bitter undertones to that post. It is not slander to say, that if your word means nothing, the substance of your character must necessarily stand in doubt. No one should slander these young turncoats, and by slander you must mean to accuse of false or dubious claims; but the verbal reproof is earned and naturally should be expected.

There's a flip side to that coin.
1

Let's say a kid accepts a job (as you put it) with a program, and the program stops recruiting for that job because of that commitment. Then another program comes along with a bigger bag of money, and the kid decommits to the first program that suddenly has to go find someone else to fill the job.
I'd submit that the first program has suffered financial (material) damages that, in the real world, could be seen as breach.
As of today, the business side of NIL hasn't quite yet caught up with the entitlement the kids are feeling. Right now, they've got the leverage.
But it won't last.
And these kids and their goofball parents/guardians better grow thick skin and show up with actual agents and attorneys.
Because one day probably sooner than later, a "commitment" is going to be seen as a professional services/player development contract that both parties must honor (at least for the first year or two.)
And then, Dabo is going to look like an even bigger genius, because his will be one of the few programs that will *actually* be able to say,
"If you SIGN A CONTRACT with Clemson, we probably WON'T BREACH the contract and go find some free agent when you don't play like a hall of famer year 1. If you want an every-man-for-himself situation, go play for Florida State or Colorado."

Let's look at it from the other direction. If Dabo had pulled the offer for this kid after his commitment just because a better DE wanted the job (or if another DE of equal skill was willing to play for less $$), we'd rightly be complaining that Dabo's "business decision" was wrong.

Less than 2% of college football athletes every get a NFL contract.
The other 98% know it. The ones that get NIL money want to maximize their up front $$.
Given that a lot of them come from poor families, it's a big deal to them.

When the NCAA adapts similar rules on contracts that the NFL uses, this will again be a great sport. Right now it is crooked as a dogs hind leg.
