FSU game to blame..?

After FSU put a beatdown on LSU the other night a thought entered my head...that might not have been a good thing for that to happen the night before we played.

I think our team watched that and started looking ahead - likely were beforehand to a certain degree (and not likely to the extent to affect performance and focus) but how well FSU played and how highly hyped that game was...then to watch them look like they did against ND last year (only worse). They looked uninspired, uninterested, unfocused, and completely out of sync - all descriptions of a team looking ahead and not taking their opponent seriously. It was obvious they had already written the game in...and their performance showed it.

Unlike many on here I don't see the sky falling and that it's the end of the World, etc etc. I truly think they just laid an egg, a HUGE one.

This team is still stacked, and not enough is being said about a new O, a new OC, etc...nor the fact that if we played clean we win that game handily.

We're going to be massive underdogs to FSU, which is great and let's be honest, they'll come in licking their chops and overconfident - who wouldn't be after watching us last night?!

Our hope now is that these next two easy games givers us the chance to settle in. Then we play like we should've against Duke (if we weren't looking ahead) and beat FSU, who will likely be #3 or #4 by then. Need to hope ND is undefeated when we play them and that FSU also wins out so we get them, still highly ranked, again in the ACCCG. That is our chance and path to the CFP. I still believe in this team and that it can happen...I think last night was an aberration and they'll learn big time from it.

I think our team watched FSU and thought, "let the good times roll" like we would just waltz into Wallace Wade and do the same thing.

Unfortunately, Duke didn't get the email...

Exactly...they talked a good game of, "Duke is a worthy opponent, etc etc" but you know in the back of their heads they knew/figured they'd win easily. I think add that to them watching the FSU game and knowing how big that game is going to be, the hype, etc etc...and that's where their minds were.

And that, to me, is exactly how it looked and why they played the way they did. My wife said to me when Ship dropped that easy pass near the end, ### is wrong with Ship, he doesn't drop passes like that...my answer, you don't play the way you're capable when your head is not in the game.

And I think we all saw that team-wide, clear as day.

I'd more likely place the "blame" on underestimating the opponent during formation of the game plan, too slow to adjust to an alternate game plan when the initial game plan wasn't working, too many mistakes by players at critical points, and failure for the coaches to identify and correct the blocking scheme error on field goal team after the first block. Also, the defense seems to have forgotten how to wrap up when making tackles in the open field ever since Venables left.

The good news is it should be easy for the coaches to identify countless things to work on in practice this week.

I absolutely agree that our team was not locked in and ready to take Duke seriously. The defense and their lousy angles and loafing about were the biggest indicator of that type of mentality. They thought they would show up and have a dance party in the Duke locker room and then they got exposed. This is a hard game and it must be played hard.

I think so.

No doubt the team as a whole did not have it's collective head in the game.

I was thinking the same exact thing about the FSU game.

Forgetting they were playing a Duke team "that believes" with 18 starters back off a 9-4 team.

Hey, we lost in 2016 "AT HOME" to unranked Pitt and still won the National Championship - so to your point OP - the sky isn't falling.

This team - particularly certain parts of the offense needs to show me what the hype is all about though.
Still a Tigers fan: rain, sleet, hail, hurricane, blue devil, snow or whatever else!

We also scored over 40 points against Pitt & had prior good defensive performances before that game. You also felt confident the D Watson was going ti complete the passes needed to win. I don’t have any confidence our passing game
