From my understanding Clemson would make about....

May 15, 2012, 9:22 AM

5 mil extra a yr in the big 12 from tv. I get the concern of travel cost being higher than it is now but how much extra non tv money would we make in the big 12 vs acc. I would assume a big 12 with Clemson and fsu would have better bowl games than what swofford has us in. The conference bowl money to be split would have to be higher right? The conference championship would bring in more money.

NOt sure about all the B12 bowls, but Cotton/Holiday/Alamo

May 15, 2012, 9:24 AM

are better than the ACC tie-ins.

remeber though tie ins can and do change. no guarantee what either has wont change down the line

Absolutely and the B12 is desperate

May 15, 2012, 9:28 AM

they don't have the teams to justify the ESPN/Fox TV contract and they don't have the teams to justify the bowl tie ins.

I wonder how the bowls will eventually react to conference realignment. I would think the Peach Bowl or Tangerine Bowl might reconsider sticking with the ACC if Clemson, FSU, GT, and Miami are no longer in the ACC.

If those mention left the acc. The acc wouldn't have but one decent team to send to a bowl game, VT. Well maybe NC St. and UNCheat after there probation:)

Idk about $5 mil. The ACC contract has $17.1 mil the big12

May 15, 2012, 9:51 AM

contract is being talked at around $20 mil per and that might go up if FSU and Clemson or someone like that went, but probably not a whole lot (IMO). But say it is a $22.1 million dollar contract (up 10% per school or 33% overall just for adding two schools), then it would take 4 years to just pay off the $20 million buyout (and that's not including the increased travel costs and related expenses).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my understanding is the big 12 would pay half the buyout...

May 15, 2012, 9:57 AM

Like they did with WV.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That might be true, but these are two different situations

May 15, 2012, 10:06 AM

If Clemson joined the Big12 it would be for Clemson to make more money. There is no immediate need for the Big12 to expand. WVU joined the Big12 because they were bailing a sinking ship, but by joining the Big12 they righted a different ship. the Big12 needed WVU possibly more than WVU needed the Big12. (At 9 teams, the TV contract they had would have been void and they wouldn't have had any guaranteed money)

The Big XII has a HUGE immediate need to expand...

May 15, 2012, 10:10 AM

expansion means more TV and a championship game... all which enhances the new TV deal.

The execs that put the deal together want expansion, and my understanding is that expansion only sweetens the pot.

They will expand. The question is how many teams.

Expansion doesn't necessarily help TV (mainly ESPN)

May 15, 2012, 10:17 AM

because they are locked in to both the ACC and Big 12. It helps them on one contract and hurts them on another. Remember, ESPN was sued (I think eventually dropped) when TAMU and Missouri left the B12.

May 15, 2012, 11:17 AM [ in reply to The Big XII has a HUGE immediate need to expand... ]

Agree. I think in order for the Big 12 to compete with the SEC, PAC12, and B1G they must expand. The question is when and who. IF FSU and Clemson did join the conference, I think that easly opens the door for two more teams. As far as the question of when. I'm hoping that it will happen this year but if it doesn't then it needs to happen in the next 2 years. What we do right now is that the Big 12 and ESPN agreed on a contract making the teams in the Big 12 recieving around 20 mil. What we don't know right now is what are the terms of that contract as far as expansion. I would believe they would have something in there covering expansion and what the money could be if they did expand.

17m from ACC does not fully kick in until 2021.
