Little did they know, John Swofford would take over in 1997

The rest is his enduring legacy.

And why are they crying when FSU, Miami, and VT football (or lack there of), is the #1 reason our TV payout is crap.

Swofford is to blame for the length of the deal and the GOR, but lack of interest in ACC football falls at the feet of the 3 programs above.

People have got to get off this thing about Swofford and the GOR. ESPN was not going to give the ACC a network (which brings in significant revenue to the conference) without a long-term deal and a guarantee all the teams would remain in the league.

In case you haven't noticed, the SEC's deal runs for almost as long, until 2034.

Exactly, and one of the things that has changed...

... is the revisionist history of Bobby Bowden's role in the decision to join the ACC.

1. At the time, FSU actually made more money joining the ACC than the SEC. The ACC had an amazingly lucrative basketball contract which more than made up the difference in the football package the SEC had. The decision to join the ACC was made for monetary reasons.

2. Was Bobby in favor of the move to the ACC over the SEC? Probably. Yes, he did joke about it being easier to win the ACC than the SEC. He joked a lot throughout his career. And, his jokes were often misunderstood.

I'm not here to defend Bobby. But, I am here to tell you that if anybody would care to actually do the research (which a good journalist should do) they would discover that when the SEC and ACC were both courting FSU, FSU went with the conference that offered them the most money.

Even back then, money drove the train.

Good analysis. I agree, the article smacks of revisionist history (not surprising coming from a "journalist")

Also, I don't recall the SEC always being the premier football conference. Back in 1992 the BIG had the reputation as the best, often followed by the BIG 8 (or 12, whichever they were). The SEC was just a football conference.

What has always and will continue to bother me are comments people like this “journalist” make. For example, “Alabama — made the inaugural College Football Playoff and was bounced by Ohio State, the eventual national champion. Many feel Alabama was the best team but was simply worn down.” If an SEC team loses, it was that “tough schedule” that “wore them down.” If they win, it’s because of that “tough schedule” and “steel sharpens steel” or some other nonsense. Both times we beat Bama that was the party line - Bama was just “worn down.” Heard Finebald and others say that very thing.

Yes, I know this is an old article, but nothing has changed. Tough conference? Yes. But excuses are for losers as they say. When you lose, admit you were beaten by a better team. That’s something SEC pundits and apologists seem incapable of doing.

As an FSU fan, where would you like them to go? SEC or B1G? Are you 50/50? 70% SEC and 30% B1G? And can you give your reasons why. Where do most FSU fans want them to go? Where do you guys think they will end up?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would prefer SEC.

Mar 1, 2023, 12:44 PM

I'm a good ole boy. Lived most of my young life in GA. I still pull for SEC teams over B1G teams (at least OSU, Mich, Penn St.). I would rather see FSU play UGA, Auburn and TN than Michigan, Penn St. and Purdue.

When the Florida State women's teacher college can't even win in the ACC why would the do so in the SEC...the other 100 fans would not show up and that one `cat` would go back to reading his book!

I would love FSU to join the B1G if they leave the ACC. I think a lot of people may not think its a possibility because of academics and non-aau status. I think getting into the SE, specifically Florida, has got to be the biggest priority for the B1G. Academics may he important, but football and recruiting make the conference. Its SEC vs B1G and the sec has the upper hand. Kevin ##### ### Warren mentioned that aau wasnt the only thing the B1G would consider regarding expansion. I would take FSU, Clemson, GT, and NC in a heartbeat. GT with some time and money could be very formidable. And the B1G desperately needs to be where the best recruits are.

Clemson doesn't win a conference title or natty again if they join the SEC. All this money people are so hung up on, no one even states what it's for or where it goes. It'll go to the university and other sports. It's not going to magically pay for better recruits.

I believe any one of the top 30 to 40 programs will be able to win a natty, when we move to a playoff.

Early upsets in week one of the tournament will give an unlikely school an easy run to the title.
