For the few who are interested ...SpaceX Starship is having a Test Flight

this morning, launching around 8 a.m EST.(Pushed till 9 a.m.)

This is the largest rocket ever developed and is designed to be fully and repeatedly reusable.

Today's test, if successful won't have either stage return for a controlled landing. They will fall into the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean. But if the hover landing works, the next flight will possibly have the booster return to the pad to be caught by the hydraulic arms on the launch tower since there are no landing legs.

They would have to modify to attach some kind of landing legs. That much

weight pushing down on rocket motors that are still firing, and being bottled up completely would cause a somewhat large explosion, aye?

Yes. The weight of 33 engines alone would be difficult to support on

landing legs. Add in the rest of the structure and the legs and it will be way too heavy. It almost has to be caught.

"The combined Starship and Super Heavy together stand at as towering 394 feet tall (120 meters) compared to the Saturn 5 rocket which was 363 feet (111 meters). Its 33 Raptor engines will generate more than 16 million pounds of thrust, roughly twice that of the Saturn 5."

Maybe they should call Buzz Aldrin for some tips.

Buzz has always caught a bunch of flack, but he was brilliant... the problem was he let everyone know that.

Thanks for the information.
Also the docking for the Starliner with the International Space Station will be taking place today at about 12:15 noon. You can watch it free on NASA TV Live.

Awesome launch and descent of the booster section. It hovered perfectly before touching down in the ocean.

One thing for sure. Listening to the four Rocket Nerds watching this launch and

landing, all four of them will have to change their shorts once this thing lands, as they have all creamed them.

Summary: The booster appeared to complete the flight successfully.

One engine of 33 failed but that was no issue. It returned with the right trajectory and hovered above the Gulf waters before gently splashing down.

The rocket payload stage had a successful flight through the majority of re-entry, though plasma appeared to burn through part of the flaps. The cameras onboard were fried. The rocket was able to stay mostly intact, complete the flip maneuver, relight the engines and splash down in the Indian ocean.

It was amazing.
