Football recruiting observation

3

Feb 16, 2023, 4:43 PM

I follow recruiting very closely and it is a daily obsession. I don’t post on it much because I am not trying to get that attention. Anyways, some people have mentioned about Josiah Thompson getting crystal ball the other day to the Gamecocks. I feel we have a legitimate shot at him still even though perceived as a Gamecock lean. I noticed the crystal ball was from Gamecock insider, Tony Morrell. I understand being a homer, but looking this percentages of being correct (76%) to others like Wilfong (91%) is laughable. Just saying that percentage is awful compared to everyone else I saw on there as I looked. Maybe we might get him, but maybe not. Just a thought

Not sure how not getting a commitment is an indictment on development/coaching. Clemson has put some OL in the NFL recently. Recruiting maybe, but in state kids are different. If they grow up coots (obviously questionable parenting) and their dream is to play for them, it’s a tough nut to crack. IF back in the day I was a prized recruit, there is NO WAY I would go to USuC. Even IF they had a record like Bama.

If your football team is known to not have a very good O line for year after year and very few of your o linemen get drafted or signed in the NFL, you get a reputation for not being a good place to go if you have NFL aspirations. Once that perception amd narrative starts to settle in, other recruiters use that against you.

Here comes the development and coaching part. Why are we able to recruit a 4* but not get him to the NFL? 🤔

Just think about it. I’m sure you will see the connection to our oline recruiting challenges of late.

Of late, do you mean the three 4* recruits in the last signing class or do you mean the highly recruited guys interested in us for the next class? I swear, some of y’all lack basic reasoning skills. Trying to pin your narrative on why three instate guys chose the coots is silly at best

I look across the NFL and see plenty of OL from small schools or undrafted FA (Tyler Shatley comes to mind). OL is probably one of the hardest positions to grade, not only coming out of HS but coming out of college. I think Austin is doing a good job so far, but as was mentioned before, development has to become apparent. As for instate recruitment, I’ll stick to my guns on that, which is the gist of the original poast.

Feb 20, 2023, 9:38 AM [ in reply to Re: I shall explain… ]

That signals something believable is out there signaling to them that their chances are better with the coots than us for their future aspirations. Why else would so many make such a choice if they thought otherwise. That is the point here.

Whatever story the recruits are getting from the coots, it is apparently sticking. I think Scar is pointing to our lackluster NFL production at o line and their O line coaches history before joining the coots.

USuc offered both Thompson and Pringle a full 15 months before we did, I don't buy the longtime fan excuse in 2023 with these mercurial kids—

Sub par offensive line play has been part of our DNA for quite a while. Yeah, we recruited a few blue chippers when we were winning national championships but the reality is we never really did a decent job of developing offensive linemen. Dabo waited waaay too long to address that issue. Glad he finally did it, though. It won’t get turned around instantly, it’s going to take some time.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To see progress if the right coaches are in place. So this will be the test year for Austin to show he is the guy. We need to see serious progress in pass protection this year.

Thompson is Columbia bound. Ships sailed. We need to focus on Franks. I cannot understand for the life of me why Dabo is stubborn about the portal. There are plenty of small school, seasoned O-linemen that would surely jump at the chance to play here!

I won’t comment on development but everyone’s takes on recruiting is laughable… let’s see how this class closes because so far when Dabo misses to the coots he improves.

2023:
Clemson per rivals OL 5.9, 5.9, 5.8
UofSC per rivals OL 5.8, 5.8, 5.6, 5.6

2022:
Clemson 5.9, 5.9
UofSC 5.7, 5.7, 5.6

2021:
Clemson 6.1, 5.9, 5.9, 5.7
UofSC 5.5, 5.5

We can talk development but my goodness the point on recruiting is a joke. At least try research before making dumb posts about how bad UofSCjr is killing us on recruiting trail for OL lol. It’s laughable.

I wouldn’t say Rivals is the best site for scouting and ranking talent but that’s besides the point. It’ll be tough to find two OT talents like Thompson and Pringle, especially so close to home. We have to expand the board asap so we can draw some more OL for March spring practices.

I would say Rivals is the most accurate… they all have flaws but Rivals is more accurate than not. A lot of the others lost me when they had Deshaun a 4 star and Justin Fields ahead of Trevor.

As for the expanding board I will assume we are doing just that. I said wait until the end of class to judge based on what we get… I used the above to share despite our “misses” we bring in equal and better talent.

Not sure why so many don’t understand the dynamic involved…

1

Feb 17, 2023, 11:28 AM

… with kids born and raised in the state of South Carolina.

99% of kids who grew up in this state are not “on the fence” regarding their preference for Clemson or SCAR.

They have been conditioned since early childhood one way or the other by parents, siblings, cousins, friends, coaches, teachers, etc. and once they become seniors in high school, they are not subject to being “flipped” by anything that a recruiting staff can do.

It’s too late by then.

Clemson will get their share of the good players from the Palmetto State, but overall, SCAR will probably get more.

But, Clemson will still beat SCAR on the field with an alarming degree of regularity, with great players who came from other places.

Good for a while so I’m not sure why people get so worked up. Look at the lineman we signed out of TX and GA and would you honestly take any of these guys in state over them. The level of competition in this state is a joke. Sure there is a guy here or there but it’s typically not at OL - it’s either skill position, DL or kicker….. becoming a regional and then national recruiter has been paramount to our rise
