Florida State, Clemson leaving ACC put on hold

Florida State, Clemson leaving ACC put on hold for a stunning reason
by Scott Rogust17 hours ago
The Florida State Seminoles’ and Clemson Tigers’ desires to leave the ACC hit a roadblock due to this specific reason.

Realignment has been a hot topic in college football. While USC and UCLA both moved from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten last year and officially doesn’t kick in until the 2024 season. In the past couple of weeks, the Big Ten added Oregon and Washington, and the Big 12 brought in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Arizona State. That has since left the Pac-12 in flux, with Stanford, Cal, Washington State, and Oregon State as the only teams remaining. But there has also been some uncertainty in the ACC.

The Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers have both been looking for an exit from the ACC, as they have both been critical of their current media rights deal. But, the programs had until this past Tuesday to find a way out of the deal and to find a new home. Well, some of their plans blew up in smoke.

According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, industry sources say that there isn’t much desire for the Big Ten or SEC to add schools like Florida State and Clemson. However, Dodd notes that the ACC’s “ironclad grant of rights agreement” wouldn’t allow such a move to happen anyway.

Big Ten, SEC reportedly uninterested in adding Florida State and Clemson
The ACC’s current media rights deal is in effect until 2036, in which they are primarily aired on ESPN. However, ACC schools could be on pace to make $30 million less than those in the Big Ten and SEC in annual distribution by 2026. Speaking of the Grant of Rights, if a school were to leave, thus breaking it, the ACC would continue to hold the television rights for that team’s home game, per Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.

Without interest from the Big Ten and SEC, both schools are left with no choice but to remain in the conference in 2024.

This comes after a noteworthy couple of weeks in the ACC. Not only was Florida State openly threatening to leave the conference, but the ACC was also considering looking at adding two schools. Notre Dame was the lead school pushing for the conference to add Cal and Stanford. However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that there were “substantial roadblocks.”

Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, and North Carolina State are against expansion in news first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and Richard Johnson. Both schools would receive acceptance if they received one more vote, but there is reportedly no formal vote expected to be held.

As of now, it appears that college football is hitting the pause button on realignment. While Florida State floated the idea of leaving, and Clemson seemed to consider it as well, it’s not happening due to disinterest from the Big Ten and SEC.

I don’t believe that the B1G and SEC are disinterested for any reason other than the GOR. Somebody is going to add Clemson and FSU, and the SEC isn’t going to let the B1G get them.

Makes sense that they are disinterested FOR NOW. I would imagine they want to wait a season or two to get accustomed to their new members and see how the new CFP format will change with one less Power conference.

I read this yesterday. The headline made me think there was a new twist. He states this as if it is a newly discovered reason. It has been THE issue from day 1. Did he just figure it out? The $120 exit fee is easily doable.

There will be a time when the timing and economics work out to exit. Unless, they find a way out of the GOR.

It will be a matter of when and how much. The ACC can stick their head in the GOW sand, but the time will come when the economics are right and we gone.

I never read/saw anything that said the B1G/SEC were falling over themselves to offer invite(s) at this time .. ..or even in the near future.

Lots of national and very non national pundits/talking heads/basement dwellers speculating why it might make sense. But never saw anything saying “reliable sources in the B1G/SEC offices state….”

Just not even a whiff of smoke.

There is no rush for either conference even if there is interest.

Then maybe you're not looking in the correct places. It is not going to be a lead story on ESPN or the networks. The conferences do not telegraph moves. They report it after the fact for the most part. And ESPN specifically has a reason to keep things status quo.

If the SEC is smart...

Aug 17, 2023, 12:49 PM

They'll find a way to help cancel the ACC GOR and get Clemson, FSU, Miami, and UNC.

The BIG would live to have all of them.

That might drive Notre Dame into the BIG, but no one except Irish fans cares.

Something I have to remind myself of is that these talks are about more than just football. In my mind, it's like playing an old NCAA Football video game and I start thinking about who to put in what conference. Having said that, Clemson and FSU would be attractive for their other sports, but maybe not some of the other schools. Besides, even if one of those conferences was interested right now, they likely can't say anything until it's a done or almost done deal.

Similar to Stewart Mandel’s 28 team, 4 division idea. My guess is it will be more than 28 teams, and that it will be football only. The other sports will remain in traditional conferences. But what do I know?

He doesn't give any new information. It's 1- year old summary of ongoing talking points.

He simply restates why the ACC GOR is an albtross, and the public message of the BIG and SEC. Coincidentally, right before they both expanded, they publicly said something like "we aren't currently looking at adding new members".

He must be really bored.

“No your honor, we weren’t tampering with ACC schools. See, I’m entering into evidence this piece from Dennis Dodd where he says we weren’t even interested from August of 2023.”

Dodd is an easy mark and willing to say whatever he’s told with applying even a tiny bit of critical thinking to wonder what motives they could have for telling him this.

Without repeating what others said, I will just add....

3

....Color me doubtful.

No way did FSU make all the public statements they made without valid reason to believe there is an offering on the table as soon as they can figure out a way to leave the ACC.

This is old, fake news.....

This is the narrative ESPN and the ACC WANTS ppl to believe. CLEM, FSU and others have been in constant talks with other conferences for years. Decision has already been made. Only ND joining the ACC could possibly change the decision. That's not happening. LISTEN to what DABO told you where this is all going.....Clemson and FSU and others will end up in one of the two mega conferences.

Clemson and FSU have been subsidizing the ACC FOR YEARS while other teams CHOOSE not to invest their $$$ in FB. Why should they when they get an equal amount for doing nothing. In other words, they are getting a free ride and an equal share of the $$$ WE produce while not investing themselves. Much like ND wanting STAN and CAL in the ACC badly b/c it benefits them, but won't fully join themselves.

You should know by now.....going all the way back BB issues, ACC tacking on a third year, giving UNC a total pass for major rules violations, etc.... The ACC is not our friend.......

Re: Florida State, Clemson leaving ACC put on hold

Aug 17, 2023, 1:54 PM

I'm not surprised to hear the SEC might not be interested in us right now. Do you really think those schools that we go head to head with on recruiting in football would welcome us with open arms? Do you really believe Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and SC want to see us in the SEC right now? How many times do we hear recruits say, I would have gone with Clemson "if only you were in the SEC?"

I do think as the super conference concept begins to become a reality, that will change, but for now, I think many of those schools would rather keep us outside looking in until they are forced to bring us on.

Re: Florida State, Clemson leaving ACC put on hold

Aug 17, 2023, 7:12 PM

Those schools might not want us, but the people in the Conference office do. All the recruits that we do get would end up in their conference. All the wins that we have gotten from the SEC wouldn’t hurt but help them if we joined. They would absolutely LOVE to have Clemson.

We need to see the source. The article is written like pure clickbait from some desperate clownfish. The title has no factual evidence or statements that Clemson and FSU have put anything on hold.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson fans need to realize that even though we are awesome

Aug 17, 2023, 7:12 PM

the Big 10 and the SEC are already set up for success with or without us. The SEC doesn't "need" us. They already have several thriving programs. The Big 10 doesn't "need" us either.

We are awesome. We are an elite program. We have better traditions and pageantry than anyone. Clemson is my favorite. We are more than good enough to be in either conference. But.... they.... don't.... need.... us.

We are in the ACC and should make the most of it until someone decides they can't live without us. Don't sell your home until you have a new one signed for.
