What do y'all know about ECU flashing? #boatstuff

Boat guys....apparently motorcycles also.

I'm just now learning about this for the first time.

It seems they sell kits to flash an ECU on a Yamaha outboard. This can take a 150 hp engine up to 231 hp and somehow make them more fuel efficient in the process???

So I'm over here pondering......if the 150 and the 175 kit is the same / it takes both engines up to 231 hp then what is the advantage of paying more for a 175 if you are going to flash the ecu?

I really should not be thinking about this though cuz it makes me want to spend monies.

Don't you have a Yamaha

And I think FishinCrazy has a Yamaha

Could be the same engine from the factory and throttled to 175, with that engine maxing at the 230 range you speak of.

Would make repairs and inventory much more simple, and no unlike common techniques with large factory assembly scenario.

Just slap different stickers and go

The F150-200 are all 2.8 I-4’s. That’s the variable valve timing I was talking about being the differentiator on the 200.

The VF150 and 175 are 2.8 I4’s also. The VF200 is a 4.2 V6.

This F vs VF thing is screwing everything up.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the 2.8L is a I-4; the 4.2L is a V6.

I haven't seen a V6 4.2l 200 since they started making the V6 4.2L. I had a Yamaha 200 V6 3.3l years ago, but it was a completely different engine than the V6 250.

My guess is the $ difference between a V6 200 and a v6 250 or V6300 isn't enough to make someone buy a v6 200. The v6 is heavier than the I4, and would prob only ever be part of twins; if anyone gets twin 200's, they would get the much cheaper and lighter I-4 F200.

Huh? Not a clue. Guess one wouldn't be concerned about the warranty at that point. My 150 pushes my 21.5 ft bay boat close to 45 mph. under the right conditions. Plenty for my purposes.

Interesting though. Got any links?

The VF175 is a Vmax SHO model and is only available with mechanical controls. The F175 is a non-USA spec model.

No clue on US availability but some US based boaters on one of the forums were describing their experience with them down to GPS WOT speeds.

It just said the F175 generally came with digital controls and the F150 (how did ford not sue over this?) had both options.

They don't make it easy.

They don't sell a F175 in the US. Only the F150/F200 (digital or electronic controls):

https://yamahaoutboards.com/outboards/350-150-hp/in-line-4

But they do sell the VF175, which is a VMAX SHO (Mechanical controls only):

https://yamahaoutboards.com/outboards/v-max-sho/v-max-in-line-4

Notice the difference in cowling shape; the Vf175/VF150 have the "old" style cowling (different colors and decals). Also no integrated power or hydraulic steering like the "new" models above.

They are probably last in repowers because they are expensive, unless they are packaged with a boat.

I don't think they worry about the 1-offs too much. Re: my comments about never seeing a F200 4.2l V6.

Those are VMAX SHO models.

I have heard they have different camshafts than the non VF models to get additional torque, but I've never taken one apart to see.

At one point the VMAX SHO models were said to be geared towards freshwater boaters, but I've seen a lot of them on saltwater boats in the last few years.

Yes, I do have a Yamaha--I4 F200.

Personally I don't trust the ECM flashing. I have no real reason not to, but I don't know anyone who is currently doing it to ask. I don't think there is enough meat on that bone to get the kind of HP promises you are mentioning. If there were, Yamaha would do it and charge another several K for the same engine.

I don't want to cook a piston or valve cause I was trying to get 15 HP from an engine. I'd just sell my engine and put a bigger (HP and displacement). And if I was going to do that...I'd prob get a bigger boat, too.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You said 15 HP, but this is claiming 130 HP increase (for a 200 V6)

Dec 20, 2024, 4:53 PM [ in reply to Just seeing this ]

Sounds like a bit much, right? But you can't really claim it without getting called out on it so I take it to be true.

There is video out there of a guy running a 70 mph boat at 81 mph after the flash.

Here is a link to the 200 SHO.

Unless these are supercharged or something, that’s an insane horsepower increase from what is basically a higher fuel flow rate and a timing advance.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's claiming better fuel efficiency also

I only had a 3 year warranty and that passed 3 years ago, so it doesn't matter from that. And I only run ethanol free 89 octane gas.

But if/when I go to sell it...I'd think that would hinder the process. I mean I doubt I'd buy a used boat that had been ECU swapped/flashed.
