Feel free to flame, but I am curious....

Jan 7, 2013, 1:21 PM

how in the hell do these kids pass their exams with the grammar they use? Do they even put English as a college requirement anymore?

It's 90% of all players it seems like. All programs.

I think texting has ruined more brains than we know.

As an employer I have run into this problem too

Jan 7, 2013, 1:48 PM [ in reply to saw a special on Dateline last night about it... ]

This is OT, but it is very hard to find bright young employees who have good social skills. It is even more difficult to find bright young people who have good social skills and can write well. It is a chronic problem with my company. We have hired several people who are older who meet the requirements, but they are nearing retirement and demand higher salaries, and are infinitely more difficult to train. Ideally I would like to hire a young college graduate with good social and writing skills who can learn and be trained and absorb the knowledge to do what our company does, and do it well.

And in doing this, I continually find myself competing for law school graduates, who are usually the best qualified to do what we do, but they all would rather practice law. The point is fifty years ago most any college graduate could come in and do what our company does. Now, the majority of college graduates can not do what we require, and we are now forced to look at graduates with an even higher level of education.

backed student loans, college has become glorified high school

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is certainly part of the equation

Jan 7, 2013, 1:57 PM

But that does not explain the lack of social skills.

Holistic education is receding as technical education grows.

Jan 7, 2013, 2:17 PM

Critical thinking and advanced communication is dying. It's all a natural part of our inevitable decline. Hopefully nobody ever thought this whole America thing would last forever. :)

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's society taking education for granted because we live in

Jan 7, 2013, 2:15 PM [ in reply to Thanks to lottery scholarships, pell grants, and federally ]

excess.
You are absolutely right, college has definitely become glorified high school for many people... but the problem is in high schools and at home.

Our society is all about making things easy, and not having to solve your own problems. By the time kids get to college they are totally unprepared to handle any real problems. Critical thinking is a dying thing. Now schools are bending over backwards to adjust to this lack of problem solving by changing requirements and making everything even easier.

One of the casualties of this relaxed standard is written communication. Most people just think it's no big deal, but so many young people are totally unable to fully communicate their ideas because they always use simplified or incorrect language. But hey... everybody's doing it... so no big deal.

If you can swim with the other fish, but most of the other fish are also inept... what you have is a social problem.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not just "excess", it's excess without responsibility.

Jan 7, 2013, 2:26 PM

You can do anything, any someone else is going to pay for it. So everybody and their brother goes to college, nobody gives a #### if they are actually learning marketable skills, especially not the kids because they get a 5 year party out of the deal.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Excess + human nature = lack of responsibility.

Jan 7, 2013, 2:33 PM

The only reason I made it through school was government money. Now, I work my ### off and am underpaid.

The worst students many times are the rich kids whose parents pay for their education and their cars and their meals. Being spoiled is a problem that all sections of society suffer from. Needing help to afford college doesn't make people less likely to work hard. Never having to work hard seems to be the culprit.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rich kids suffer from lack of responsibility also. That

Jan 7, 2013, 3:20 PM

doesn't justify government. Government doesn't fix the problem, it just nationalizes it. So now nobody has to worry about being responsible. That's just great.

Jan 7, 2013, 3:39 PM [ in reply to Thanks to lottery scholarships, pell grants, and federally ]

the biggest thing i see amongst the majority of college grads i know is that they have little to no common sense, they are book smart, and a lot of that doesn't translate very well to the "real world". the availability of financial aid will help bring in students that have both common sense and the knowledge to do the jobs/positions that are entry level for a young graduate. imo, 1 is no good without the other.

Jan 7, 2013, 1:53 PM

Most reasonable people don't tweet or text like they're writing a report for english class. I'm not saying these guys are all scholars or whatever, but I wouldn't assume too much from a spur of the moment post on a social media site.

It's not really an error if the writer does it purposefully.

Most young people don't care about grammar/spelling as much when they're just trying to get a point across. Papers written for classes generally merit a little more time and attention.
