as a 9 year old in Columbia....never forget seeing Butler stretch out for Fuller's pass and screaming so loud I saw stars....even as a 9 year old I enjoyed watching the men behind me with the garnet blazers and ties slime out with their heads down while me and my Pop were raising hell in orange in their arena. My Pop was a lifelong ND fan but he detested the Chickens as much as we do so he borrowed my Uncle's Tiger sweatshirt to wear with his ND baseball cap.

Clemson football. I remember it was a chilly night and it looked like we had let the game slip away only for Fuller to complete a tight pass to Dwight Clark before Butler made "The Catch." That was some game!

Marvin Sims, the best fullback I've ever seen in a Tiger uni

#31 was a bull in a china shop with speed. Knee injuries killed him with the Colts but what a beast he was.

I agree but I'd take big Marvin if I had to take just one

I don't think we've ever had a FB with the power/speed/cutting combo along with blocking that he brought. Johnson and McCall were both very good players as well.

Jim says Clemson "tied" UNC in 1977 ... not exactly.
May 1, 2014, 2:04 PM
|
|
It's much more accurate to say that UNC tied Clemson simply because --- Clemson led late in the game and UNC had the opportunity to go for the win, but chose to settle for the tie.
It was a safe decision that gave the Tar Heels the ACC title over Clemson, but we upset Tiger fans felt it seemed a bit chicken-hearted to settle for a tie in what had been a great game.
Glad we have overtime today to avoid this issue.

We actually gave them the tie. Obed Ariri's only PAT miss of his career left it at 13-10 instead of 14-10. We had chances to stop their last drive but made some key mistakes and they got the FG. I was there and very mad.

Agree ... Sammy had several catches as good as Butler's, but

Butler's became immortal because of when and where it happened. Ditto Rod Gardner's ...
Ironically, the catch and run by Phillip Logan just prior to Butler's was just as amazing a play, but it became overshadowed because SCAR lost and Butler's grab made everyone forget Logan's catch quickly.

This was the first Clemson/South Carolina game I ever watched on tv. We were living in Chapel Hill where my husband was in grad school (I know, I know . . .). We were so excited by "the catch" that my husband flipped our recliner all the way over!

Can't remember if I cried in the upper deck that day. A lot of hugging!
