Favorite Clemson Professors?
Jul 8, 2020, 11:46 PM

Two other posts about professors got me thinking about some of the really good teachers I had at Clemson.
My favorite all time was Dr. Louis Henry. He loved southern literature and made it easy to enjoy class. He was one of those professors who genuinely cared about his students. After changing my major from Chem to English at the end of my soph year I took him every chance I got.
Who are some favorites for you?

Eddie Smith and James Gaubert were great. Eddie Smith is definitely my favorite.
Also I don’t recall his name but I had a African American professor teaching Marketing 420 who was excellent.

Hands down the best professor at Clemson was Frosty Bauknight. You never wanted to miss his class because he was so entertaining, you learned a lot and he gave three pop quizzes during the semester that counted like a test.

I must say I liked Nowak's statics class so much that I signed up for it again the following semester. I took a W the first time and he told me maybe I wasn't cut out to be an engineer if I needed to withdraw from a statics class. I wasn't going to let him beat me and I wound up with the highest grade in his class the following semester and went on to become an engineer. Back in the day, he had no scheduled exams, all pop tests, so you had to come to every class prepared to take a test.

I remember being amazed that he would walk in the class and lecture for the entire time without looking at any notes. He wrote the textbook, so I guess it shouldn’t have been surprising. It was so impressive to me as a freshman though.
He was a great guy who loved teaching and cared about his students. He always made it a point to learn everyone’s name and something about them.
He passed away about 10 years ago.

Dr Woodard was the hardest but the best prof in the dept. He was voted Master Teacher one of the years I was there. Every class, every semester, began with the same quotes - "Life's hard. Woodard's hard. Life won't grade you on a curve. Woodard won't grade you on a curve."
If you got an A in his class - and I'm proud to say I got A's in his classes! - you EARNED an A grade. You worked harder in his classes, but you also learned more in his classes. He retired last year, I think, but he was a huge credit to the university and to all of us who had the privilege to sit in his classes.

Bothe really seemed to care about the students and they put energy into their teaching. Back then, I had no idea that I was in the presence of a military hero (Skardon). What a great man, as was Macauly.
I would add BR Skelton (labor econ) and Deal (business law) and Mary Ann Prater (accounting) as great profs as well.

Boy, that is a good one! I have a couple who I recall making an impact. Dr. Steven Taylor inspired me to explore HR (My 30+ year career is in that field.) Mary Ann Prater taught Accounting, and I still recall her stories of creative employee fraud. Labor economics (Dr. Elliot? - went on to direct the professional development center) - he had the best "Mr. Haney" impersonation from Green Acres. I still use logistics I learned from Col. Wheeler (?) and remember his USAF manifest documents from a shipment that he taped together, which reached from one side of the classroom to the other. A great visual of government inefficiency. ">

You are correct for economics....Dr. Ralf Elliot. He would do crazy things to make the dismal science of Economics interesting. He was great and after having him I worked for him in the Professional Development Dept. Ran into him several years after graduation at a conference where we were on a fishing boat with 60 people and 35 were puking. With his usual humor he said " Mark, it's one vicious cycle...we puke in the barf bags and the bags go over the side of the boat, the fish eat the puke, we catch and eat the fish, and it repeats..LOL!
For logistics It was Col. Tom Mertens who you may be thinking of. He was great also. I am class of 81 for reference.

Kenzo Seo for first 2 calculus classes back in early 80's. He was very short, so we would put the erasers on top of the chalk board everyday. He was also a great ping pong player. I had to drop his class the first time I had him, but I got him again and really liked him.

I had Ma for chemistry 101. I was overloaded with classes that semester and just didnt have the time to devote to CH101. I was not doing well in her class and went by to drop her class. She convinced me that I was not doing that bad and I should stick with it and that my grades were above average for the class. I stayed, I failed I went to summer school at Spartanburg Methodist. Not a big fan of the Bishops.

my mistake I had Ma for CH102. I had George Heung (sp?) for CH101. The man did not speak english...I struggled to understand anything he said. He may have been a brilliant chemist, but the communication was a real problem for me in that class. I remember him giving a lector one day and he kept using the term minimole. Finally someone raised their hand and asked are you saying minimole or millimole? He said yes minimole and proceeded to write out millimole on the overhead projector. I looked over at the my buddy who was sitting beside me and said man we are screwed in this class.I passed CH101, but i didnt have a real good chemistry foundation going into CH102. The only class I ever failed....but im not bitter.

If I ever taught history, it would be like Dr. Steirer taught. Both were super hard teachers, but also they demanded that you actually learn, and not regurgitate. Best part was they each taught somewhat complimentary courses and if taken together, it was very enlightening. Learned more for those two professors than perhaps all others combined.

I agree that Skelton was good. Most did not like Gail Noblet. I had her for med and vet parasitology and invertebrate bio. She was tough but good. I had an older prof for contemporary lit in 1983 or 84 who was an incredible instructor. I’m ashamed to say I cannot remember his name. Tall, slim, older gentleman with gray hair. Anyone know who that was? I was a bioscience major so I think it’s okay I forgot his name.

MA Prater Daniel K Benjamin Gaybear (marketing)
Are the ones I actually remember
My English 101 teacher was from Canada and loved me.
My Spanish 4-0-too many knew I was dumbest kid in class.
My favorite two classes were statistics and economics of labor, but I don’t remember any professors names

Dr. Kenyon Revis-Wagner (biology). Entertaining and great teacher. I try to emulate his teaching style in my classes. Always like seeing him behind the bar at Nick's.

Louis Henry was my best, but the most fun were Frog Ware and Frosty Baughnight. Once in lab Frog came by and patted my stomach as I was looking in a microscope and said “ see anything, fat boy?” I thought it was funny but this generation would get him fired!

Frosty Baughknight, Dr BR Skellton, Jim Turner-Acctg ( I struggled in his classes but not his fault). The smartest I had was Knox Landers. He could arrange the class in alphabetical order and have all the girls on the front row! A genius!

Panoff Really brought the points home...fantastic sense of sarcastic humor.
Dr. Z taught me to do research and write, and stay organized (not sure that last bit stuck.)
Dr. Hayter introduced me to my profession, and sent me off to grad school at UF

He was demanding, but he was good for my college career. Taught me that drinking a lot of beer and trying to learn Dynamics was not a good match ??

English professor from 1974 until his death in 2005. He was a master of the British Romantics, and he especially loved Lord Byron. When he would read from Byron's Manfred, it was like he was possessed. A great professor whom I still remember often from my time in the late 80s.

I just found out that he’s still at Clemson. That’s great! He’s originally from Florida, and I thought maybe UF would have snatched him up since I took his class.
Professor Igo is so much fun and so full of energy and humor. I NEVER wanted to miss his class. He made learning EASY. Just pay attention and follow his examples and you understand the material. Class didn’t require a textbook. Just bring a notebook and a pencil/pen and Brent would tell you everything you needed. Just a great fella all around.

I had an engineering services class back around 82. Shop equipment, early CNC... Don't recall the teacher's real name, but he told us to call him "Reb" (short for Rebel). He told us "A Yankee is a person that lives north of Walhalla or south of Pelzer." I'll never forget it. Good guy.

I don't recall his last name because Dr.___? told us just to call him Fred. He was a tall sandy haired man and taught a statistics class, probably Math 301. He made fun of the way other professors would end an explanation with "clearly..." when a concept obviously wasn't at all clear to most students. He kept the class entertaining but made sure we learned the material. I really enjoyed that class and did well in it. I can't say the same for my other statistics-based classes.
