What these ‘big time’ college coaches see in DJU???

He obviously has limited skills but all these coaches see him as a great qb .

Wonder where he will be next season!

Historically, 3 assets make a great QB. 1) pocket presence 2) Accuracy 3) High I.Q. DJU has none of these. Every great QB in college or Pro has had these 3 attributes. A strong arm helps , but it doesn't mean much if you can't master those qualities. DJ will more than likely be benched if FSU loses to Cal on Saturday, and it looks like a losing season for Mike Norvell if that happens. I had stated earlier in June-July that these so-called prognosticators who put Florida State on a "Bobby Bowden"-like pedestal might eat their words when the season got underway. FSU lost a lot of players, and the Transfer portal (band-aid) trick does not work this year. Now he's stuck with DJU, who's losing his confidence with every game like he did at Clemson, barely averaging under 20 points per game for 3 years in Tiger Town. Florida State averages 15 ppg. right now on offense. Yes, the Notre Dame game for Clemson was clearly his best game, and it could be true that the Georgia game (10-3) could have taken away his confidence,
but all that aside, he's had 4 years to to get it right, and he hasn't. The proof in the pudding is in the eating, and the evidence is clear with DJU. Florida State needs to focus on winning ONE game and salvaging their season with a winning record. Forget the Playoffs and the ACC title. They're gone. Chances are that they end up 7-5, with a little help from the conference, but I don't see FSU winning all their road ACC games, plus Notre Dame on the road. Maybe benching DJU may give the offense a shot in the arm, and that could happen, but it appears The Seminoles are in dire straits.

I watched his HS film from his last 2 years. He was phenomenal! A true 5-star talent. He had some kinda of change of heart his soph year. Call it a mental break, family distress, whatever it was, it broke him and he has never been the same person. Sad really.

He was a cannon that could launch streaks down the sideline. I changed my thought process when looking at QBs coming out of HS, you need to see them hitting those timing routes(outs, posts, comebacks) and throwing guys to space. All the marveling over the guys with howtizers for arms leads no where more often than not. If all a QB had to do to win was throw streaks and bubble screens then the talent at wr was what was really special.

Hogg,

It is MUCH easier for a physically talented player to dominate at the high school level where many of the other athletes are several levels below you. DJU was a man among boys in high school, but not in college - where his limited abilities to figure out defenses has been much more glaringly obvious.

In a way, CK is dealing with a similar dilemma. In high school he could out scramble and outrun most defensive players - and thus make big plays. At this level, linebackers are all lightning fast and CK is having to figure out how to beat defenses with his mind rather than his feet.

My theory is that he played for a big name school in California and they smashed other High Schools because they were way more talented all over the field.
DJ benefited from this and it hid his deficiencies. DJ didn’t need to be special, his 6-4 WR was gonna win every jump ball against his 5-10 opponent.

Also, some Coaches aren’t smart. Surely you had one of those growing up? I know I did.

I watched this kid on tv several times as a high school QB and he wasn’t that impressive to me. Against really good teams he was nothing more than an average QB. I was surprised when Dabo became interested in him!!!
He really was never more than a “good” QB at Clemson with the exception of his first game against Notre Dame. I expect he will be drafted into the NFL but I will be more than surprised if he develops into an NFL star.
All the TV guys rave about him today and I have yet to see it. What have I missed???

It is easier to become enthralled with physical (measureable) skills than with the mental part of the game (much harder to predict) which becomes more and more important as one moves up the competition ladder.

At 6'5" and 240, DJU will definitely end up in the NFL, but he will never be the starter anywhere.

I don't see him ending up in the NFL, not as a QB. He is most definitely not getting drafted. He should have switched to TE, but then again he's pretty slow.

They are stuck with him, did you see the FSU backups after Travis went down? Norvell can only recruit thru the portal, so he has amassed a group of paid mercenaries that care for the money, not the cause. As long as things go smoothly, they're all in, with adversity they point fingers and fold their respective tents. Norvell will be gone soon, he's a wimp and cannot attract talent without fund$, primary reason Noles want out of the ACC, you need deep pockets to continually steal players from other programs.

My theory is that DJ has a mental disorder such that...

he is great, almost perfect in practice because QBs can't be hit on the practice field. His disorder kicks in during live action. I've accused him, probably unfairly, of protecting himself in lieu of an NFL career.

It's more likely his brain locking down under pressure. It's something I believe most folks have had happen to them when the emotion of high pressure situations overwhelm the thinking process. I believe when the ball is snapped DJ forgets all the receiver routes except for his primary and stares at the primary so he won't forget where they are. He also maintains memory of which side to dump the ball if his primary isn't where DJ thinks he should be or is covered.

I'm not addressing the pressure of being rushed and encircled by the defense. What DJ suffers is exactly the same thing young boys go through in baseball when the ball is hit to them and doubt creeps in to whether or not they can stop the ball. If they do end up with the ball in their gloves they've usually failed to remember what to do with it. That's why the hesitation and looks around occur. When the coach yells out, 'Throw it to second they immediately turn and execute his command.

DJ, being very familiar with his issues, I believe, makes his decisions while his head is on straight and it's always before the snap. At times it works and at other times it doesn't. He is truly a hit or miss type guy so loading the box and late shifts of the defense cause his brain to freeze more quickly.

IDK if counseling with help him but we know that experiences and time spent coaching him is wasted. The only hope for DJ is prayer for it's certain, nothing tried so far is working. He's the same in the last game as he was during his first year as a starter here at Clemson.

Not sure why you think they believe he is a great QB. Since he started at both transfer destinations, it is clear they were desperate with few options within their budget.

Either way, I have no idea what FSU/Norvell saw that could have made them excited about his trajectory upward. He has been in freefall ever since that huge game against ND in 2020, which Clemson managed to lose due to terrible penalties on the secondary late in the game.
