Explain the 14 point spread to us please

Clemson offense has been struggling to score 14 points in a game and the defense has been struggling to hold anyone to 14 points all year. JUST HOW do these "experts" come up with Clemson as favorites?? Is UNC really that horrific??

I think the guys in vegas just keep looking at our roster and thinking " man, those guys will probably get it together this week".
Just my opinion because I have been wondering the same thing..

UNC is awful

But 14 is still too many pts.
I think the simplest answer here is that these advanced models tend to adjust pretty slowly which can put them behind the curve on teams that are suddenly much better or much worse than they have been in the recent past.
Clemson has performed SO far below expectations that it may take 6, 7, even 8 games before these models finally get an accurate read on us - assuming we continue playing this poorly.

They are awful, but are they that awful? I wouldn’t put a dime on us winning this game, but I hope we found something that gets us back on track. We’ll see Sat.

Vegas is banking on people thinking that Clemson will eventually “turn it on” when they know we won’t. So they take everyone’s money

14 point spread is one more than 13; one less than 15.

In football, it typically is thought of as two touchdowns with two extra points. Sometimes it can be two field goals with a touchdown and a two point conversion. There are other combinations of scores that can create 14 points but they are less common.

I think I really need to start betting on football. I would take UNC to beat that spread all day.

UNCheat may be awful----but then again, so are we. We can't tackle. We can't stop the run, or the pass. We can't score. Our QB is awful.
This strikes me as a battle to see who is the tallest midget in the ACC. Sad to say, I don't think we cover.

Interestingly, the spread started at 14, went to 12.5, now back to 14

Point spreads are not a prediction for how the game will finish.

They are more a prediction for getting bettors to bet both sides of the game evenly, which is the best possible outcome for vegas over a given time.
When lines move, it's because either action is heavier on one side or it's because they are predicting action to swing to one side due to a key injury or something like that.
While you are correct a 14 pt line doesn't really make a ton of sense, the national perception of Clemson would still sway this to an artificially higher number than normal as the casual bettor has historically been more likely to bet on the blue bloods of college football regardless of lines.
Think teams like UGA, Bama, Texas currently, OSU, Clemson. In the NFL teams like KC, Baltimore, Philly....those teams will always see more action from casual bettors.

You seem to believe the point spread is a prediction of the game outcome which is incorrect. The PS is designed to get even amounts of money bet on each team. If the spread were seven points, no one would bet on the Tar Holes as they suck. While we also suck, we have much better talent, so they jack up the spread to get an even distribution.

So, is UNC "suckier" or or we "less suckier?"...not a gambler so don't know if those are betters insider terms. BTW, I don't think we have covered this year (and don't think we will this weekend). Question: When the last time we did cover the spread.. any idea when?"
