Maybe a weighted stat of football win pct combined with basketball ein pct correlated to the avg viewer ratings in those sports.
But it always strikes me when I see how far Clemson has dropped in the “best universities” rankings. We were in the top 25 while I was there. Especially relative to schools like VT and FSU.

Wasn't that "top 25 public colleges"? This apparently uses all colleges.***

US News HATES Clemson. WSJ does too. Other rankings (e.g.: Niche, Princeton Review) has CU between 50-75, usually around VA Tech.
It's like anyplace that doesn't ridicule people of faith get pushed down the rankings.
For the graph, though, isn't the left axis the only thing that matters?

What most people fail to understand is that someone (a network) has to foot the bill for expansion. And the people paying the bills ONLY care about eyeballs.
1. ND 2. Clemson/FSU is a near tie 3. Everybody else.

I adjusted it based on Clemson having great success over that time frame, while FSU was down. I think they are both below ND and in a virtual dead heat with each other, then a fairly large gap to anyone else.
Those that think UNC and UVA are above Clemson in the pecking order are just flat wrong. I do believe all 4 will get B1G invites, but UNC and UVA may be offered 50% shares for a few years. Clemson and FSU will get full shares. JMHO. ESPN is not paying for additional members. So the SEC will not be adding.

Correct. Follow the money and you’ll find the answer. It makes me laugh when I hear talking heads factoring in Academic ratings with realignment. That item is is NOT a talking point for the networks writing checks.

So long as ND gets that NBC TV contract money and has a path to the playoff

they are a non-consideration for expansion because they aren't joining a conference in football. Furthermore - because of John Swofford's sweetheart deal to give an ACC bowl tie-in to ND - they even have more reason to avoid the whole conference gig.
If it were up to me - the new CFP format would be Conference Champs ONLY (Power 5 and Group of 5) and no one else. That would force ND into a conference so they would obviously object to that format as would probably the SEC/Big10. But if we want a system that really settles things "on the field" like the NFL, then having a Conference Champion only playoff tournament is about the only way to do it while keeping the schedule to a max of 16 games played by any given team...

That format makes no sense at all. Why should group of 5 get the same number, or more, of entrants into a tournament for the natty as the P5 does?
You cannot weight P5 and G5 evenly.

Correct. Many are still living in the realities of 5-10 years ago when expansion was about markets and recruiting territory. Now that the games are available anywhere, the markets are less relevant as you’re going to reach the same amount of eyeballs.

Well that can't be right because FSU has been yelling to everyone that they are the most watched program in the ACC. Oh, they were only talking about this year when they had their best record in a decade and Clemson had it's worst in a decade. It's almost as if they were lying.

You can make the graph tell you whatever you want. Be interesting to change the date range to 2021-2023 and see where Clemson is then.

ND could pick it's conference anytime it wants. But, right now it doesn't want one.
Clemson and FSU are a huge cut above the rest.
All those guys with the money (Fox and espn) just need to figure out a way to get them out of the ACC. That is, if the money guys want them out of the ACC.
