Syracuse Crowd and the JMA Dome

Had such a great time at the game on Saturday. The improvement we are seeing with this team offers so much to be excited about!
I do want to give the Syracuse crowd some credit. Before the game, the people we met were very nice and spoke quite highly and respectfully about Clemson. During the game, the JMA Dome was surprisingly loud through three-plus quarters - much louder than I had expected.
The reception at the JMA Dome was terrible. As a Syracuse student next to us pointed out: When the dome was named for Carrier (an HVAC company) there was no air conditioning. Now that the dome is named for JMA (a wireless company) there is no reception. Go figure!
Early in the game, the majority of fans were nice people who cheered loudly for their team. But that stadium went absolutely ballistic when the targeting penalty on Mascoll was overturned. Ballistic - like a bomb had gone off! A few were screaming how Clemson unfairly gets the calls against Syracuse. In other words: typical fans.
The fans were really going nuts in the 4th Quarter as they felt the momentum was in their favor. Loud. Proud. Until Trotter’s interception. In the blink of an eye, they just disappeared. In an instant - Vanished. It was like flipping a switch.
The attached three pictures show the Syracuse home side at different points in the game (my apologies that all three appear to be sideways): - Picture 1: First Quarter: Taken at 12:09pm - Picture 2: Fourth Quarter: Taken at 3:12pm – Right after Trotter’s Interception - Picture 3: Fourth Quarter: Taken at 3:29pm – Right after Mafah’s TD
And FWIW: The streets around the dome just reeked of dried beer on Sunday morning.

I was amazed Shrader got up after that hit. It was clean but anymore they love to thorw the flag on big collisions if there is crowd reaction.

but prior to the renovation, it was pretty much a dump which is to be expected considering it was more than 40 years old.

Thanks for clarifying - I thought the sideways stands may have been why all the fans fell out before the end of the game.

I agree everyone i met going to and from the game and at the stadium were really nice.
Renovations to the stadium are continuing. By next year they will have actual seats in the lower bowl and the aluminum bench seats in the upper deck will have back rests.
We flew southwest into baltimore and then baltimore to syracuse. Great flights. Airport is close to the city and close to campus.
Stayed in liverpool, NY (1 or two exits from the airport and campus)
Ate at Santeangelo's also in liverpool. Really good Italian food... wide variety on the menu (i had the stuffev veal). Not a cheap pizza joint, but not outrageously expensive.. Probably the best Italian food we've had in quite some time. Great bread and salad with dinner and portion sizes were big. Left stuffed and with a to-go box with leftovers.
First time going to a game in Syracuse. Pleasantly surprised how nice of a trip it was.

I'm going to add that the bad internet reception in the dome is a absolute plus. No temptation to get on Tnet and the in-game thread and have it ruin the enjoyment of being in the crowd watching a football game and seeing players competing to the best of their ability.

Thanks, slycat®!
Sounds like you had a great trip as well. We stayed near the dome in Syracuse. We ate at Dinosaur BBQ, at Margarita's (Mexican), and at a place near the dome called Phoebes. Very much enjoyed each restaurant!
Like you, we had an excellent trip!

We heard about Dinosaur BBQ on the trip up. Was highly recommended. I can do BBQ myself but we just haven't found good italian food as prevalent where we've lived in the south (and currently live) as it is north of the mason dixon. So when we get the chance, that's what we go for.

LOL - Thanks, Spud.
I am starting to like this sideways picture effect. I wonder what my wife would say if I were to move each of the framed pictures in our house - setting each one on its side.

While I was watching the game, I noticed the huge drop-off of fans after the Trotter interception.

There are many nice people in upstate NY. Nothing like going to NYC. That said, you can find rude people everywhere. I have met many good ones from Buffalo, Albany, and even Syracuse. Unfortunately the entire state takes the wrap for what New York City puts out.
It's about like Washington with Seattle, or Oregon with Portland - those states are also completely different once you get away from their largest cities.

But as DownhillDefender® mentioned, the people in this area were nothing like the people in New York City. Syracuse is not a particularly big city - and there was quite a lot of farmland around the city.
Even though New York City is in the same state as Syracuse, it felt like NYC could have been a million miles away.

they are NOTHING like New York City residents. The upstate NY people I know or have met are actually conservative. The same applies for the residential California natives I have met.

Beat us😳 maybe 4 years ago?? We didn’t see much of Syracuse because we stayed in Buffalo so we could go to Niagara Falls. I’m thinking we are bad luck. We went to Notre Dame last year and Pittsburgh the year before that and we lost both of those games too!!

Like you - we were thinking we were the bad luck! We went to Pittsburg in 2021. We loved seeing the city. Everything was great - until the game kicked off.
We went to Notre Dame in 2022. We loved seeing the University. Everything was great - until the game kicked off.
We had friends, including our paster (a Clemson fan), tell us that we weren't allowed to go to an away game this year. After the game on Saturday, our son texted us and said that he was glad Clemson won or he wasn't going to allow us to go to any more away games ("Three Strikes and You're Out" as he put it).
Glad our jinx finally appears to be broken!
Thanks, York County Tater®
