Jun 18, 2012, 10:35 PM [ in reply to Good grief man - how far do they travel already? ]

Why were conferences set up in regions before all this expansion talk? Was that by accident? Why is every sport set up that way professional sports included?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good grief man - how far do they travel already?

Jun 18, 2012, 11:17 PM

Because BC, Pitt and Syracuse belong in the same conference as Miami and FSU (nevermind having FSU and BC in the same division)? Yeah, it used to be regional in the past, but it isn't any more - and the ACC has the most blame in that shift. We made this bed, now we get to lay in it. It's either travel a lot in the ACC, or travel a lot (plus a little bit more) in the B12.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good grief man - how far do they travel already?

Jun 18, 2012, 11:28 PM

Has it worked for the ACC? Why will it work for the SEC or the BIG12 I think PAC and BIG are just watching and waiting. No 16 team conferences in near future. So why leave ACC unless our hand is forced.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good grief man - how far do they travel already?

Jun 18, 2012, 11:32 PM

I'm not arguing that point (that we shouldn't leave unless our hand is forced [FSU leaves]). However, I've just never understood the travel argument. You're right that it hasn't worked for the ACC - but if it's not working here, why stay when we could go to another conference where the travel might not work, but at least we make more money?

I'm just stuck believing there's no way FSU is staying, and if they are leaving I don't want to go down with the ACC. In a dream world we'd get ND and some other school to make our conference relevant in football, but that just isn't happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good grief man - how far do they travel already?

Jun 18, 2012, 11:35 PM

I honestly don't think FSU leaves. If they do I don't think it is the end for the ACC there is still plenty of money in the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good grief man - how far do they travel already?

Jun 18, 2012, 11:38 PM

Have you seen the numbers for the ACC TV deal? Because the ACC has been a little too guarded on that contract for me to trust that we'll be "ok" money-wise when we have to compete against SEC and Big12 schools for recruits. Until those numbers come out, no one can say for sure how much money is in the ACC - and the longer the ACC withholds that information, the more likely it is that we actually don't have enough money in this conference to remain competitive.

Jun 18, 2012, 10:26 PM

Slive has got for the SEC (read: Florida Gators). If FSU leaves us behind in marginalized ACC, Clemson football will have taken a punch to the stomach. The ACC and Big East will be slightly higher in national respect than Conference USA, maybe. This better not be true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If FSU is leaving, it's because word has leaked out what

Jun 18, 2012, 10:38 PM

What has FSU done lately? What makes you think they will fair any better in a tougher conference? They can't win the ACC you know the conference USA teams that are in it. I would say if we are going on tradition and respect. Miami would have more clout.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who gives a #### about FSU?

Jun 19, 2012, 12:24 AM

We're talking about CLEMSON'S future. Florida State is tangential to the discussion. I don't care if they win the Big XII or flounder for decades, if they leave us in the ACC, Clemson football will be marginalized. The ACC without Florida State is a third-rate football conference.

If the BCS deal doesn't punish Independents, it's worth a

Jun 18, 2012, 10:53 PM

look should we start facing a depleting ACC.

We'd have two games annually against SEC teams (H/A) minimum. (2)

Schedule Home/Aways with one team each from Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, ACC and Big East (5)

Rotate Home/Aways with Notre Dame and BYU (1)

Schedule two home games annually against Mid-Majors (2) or replace one with an extra Home/Away with a major.

Add the in-state cupcake mandated by law (1)

Add an extra Home/Away from the major conferences (1)

12 games. 4-5 away, 7-8 home annually.

Cut a deal with NBC along the lines of a Notre Dame where they get first choice for either NBC broadcast or NBCSports Channel broadcast for home games (7-8 annually), then either Fox or ESPN for what NBC passes on, preferably ESPN as it allows for greater access (possibly ESPN Gameplan PPV telecasts).

NBC gets additional college football programming out of the deal, and with the cross-section of conferences we'd be hosting they get even greater exposure in those regions that they don't have access to now.

Throw basketball into the Big East and go C-USA or something for other sports.

Bottom line is if there's not a league we're content with, why be in one. With the radical changes ongoing in media and distribution, conditions are far different today than they were when USuC went that route 40 years ago.

Other than being thrown out by its mere mention, I'm not picking up on its weaknesses to simply make it laughable or impossible. There are a lot of advantages when such a move is performed from a position of strength, as we are currently in.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Moses didn't have Death Valley to call his home (or maybe

Jun 18, 2012, 11:36 PM

Let's assume this is a feasible idea. Let's look at what makes Notre Dame's situation (and to a lesser extent, BYU's) work.

1) They have a large national following.
2) They have a network all to themselves for college football coverage (BYU has own network that is more available than the Longhorn Network).
3) They are practically a flag ship university for an entire religion.
4) Even if you don't like Notre Dame, you've heard of them (brand recognition).

Clemson has none - I repeat, none - of these attributes. We love our school, but there are tons of people on the west coast who haven't heard of Clemson (I know, I've met a number of them), what state we are in, or even what conference we play in. How you expect Clemson to get a TV contract by going independent that would even come close to the one we currently have in the ACC is a little out there. Just don't see where any of the money comes from.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Moses didn't have Death Valley to call his home (or maybe

Jun 19, 2012, 12:14 AM

Can't dispute #3 obviously, but the others are certainly up for debate.

In terms of media value, it's pretty much been determined that football produces 80% of the ACC's media revenue, and our program is one of its top producers in that category. In fact it's this imbalance that is producing much of the Big XII talk anyway among us and FSU. By removing the deadweight on the football end, our proportional share of the value is actually larger than the league average. By factoring in an NBC, which is hungry for sports programming and has been largely shut out of college football, this actually produces an opportunity for a premium there, especially when they would be looking at creating an even wider net of market exposure based on who we are playing.

While we don't have as large and dedicated of a national following as other programs, we are highly recognizable nationally thanks in large part to our paw icon and overall on-field success (even if you don't know where we are, people recognize the paw). We're a nationally broadcast entity already, and quite often. I'm not sure how that changes. Add in the televised appeal of home games broadcast from Death Valley plus the audience that our opponents would produce on their own, and this becomes a non-issue. If anything, over time our national recognition would increase as we expand our schedule north and west.

From a scheduling standpoint, it's hard not to at minimum duplicate the current SOS that we have in the ACC. By having more control over our schedule through a mixture of top, mid-level and lower-tier programs from across the conference landscape we can target a realistic SOS.

Modern media has created significant opportunities that didn't make this possible forty years ago. When USuC left the ACC there were 3 TV broadcast outlets plus local affiliate coverage. Now there's 25+ TV outlets and virtually unlimited distribution opportunities via the internet.

It seems like a viable option that at least should be considered should the ACC step backwards.
