and the Eddie Murphy era and chris Farley, etc.. I know the general conscensus is that SNL has had it's ups and downs, but has steadily gone downhill since those days. Personally, I think smart, relevant comedy is extremely hard, and cranking it out at a high level week after week is dang near impossible, but I think SNL still cranks out some good stuff.

I think there's such a saturation of good content now that we forget how hard it is, and that old SNL had plenty of duds. 15 years ago the way you got a saturation of good content was buying a "best of Chris Farley" DVD. Now we expect high quality all the time because we can get it instantly and reliably scrolling reels or searching YouTube.

Contrary to popular revisionist history, not everything the original cast did

was all that funny, just like now. Comedy is hit or miss, what will make one person spew their drink may not even get a hint of a smile from another sitting right next to them.

A good example was Buck Henry. I never found MOST of the stuff he did to be that funny, but the "Mr. Bill" segments were always darkly funny. "It's too tight, it's too tight, Oh NNOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo....." just before the helium balloon breaks off his cookie arm and floats away with it. Who didn't like inflicting mayhem on a helpless cookie man?

I always thought SCTV was even a notch higher than SNL. Still hit and miss, but far more hits than misses on a good night. Same formula, but as a fake TV station they added movie parodies as well as commercial parodies and backstage drama.

As with SNL, just astounding what they put together in less than a week's time.

Like 'Auditions for Taxi Driver"

My only real gripe about the last few years (since Hader left) is the lack of impressionists on the show. Every cast member mostly has the same abilities right now and other than "look" they don't bring much variety in talents. Heck, I'm not sure they even have anyone who can sing in the current cast and almost every cast has had a few (usually women) who can.

The "please don't destroy" guys are probably the only ones on the show that have really "popped" and even they have mostly been quiet this season (to give the lonely island guys their space to return).
