ESPN profits lower

ESPN's Q2 revenue was up 18%, but profit is down 9% due to the high costs for what they have to pay for programming:

"Costs rose at ESPN, dragging down operating income at Disney’s cable networks division by 9 percent, to $1.8 billion. Programming and production cost increases were related to college football, the start of the SEC Network and the addition of a National Football League wild card playoff game, Disney said."

The model may very well be the right one - lock up rights to leagues, conferences, and playoffs by paying extremely high prices to keeping Fox, Comcast, etc. from becoming legitimate competition. But, if the lower profit becomes a trend, perhaps they will need to rethink the strategy. SEC Network may be working, but does anybody actually watch a softball game between Vandy and Arkansas?

Parent Disney still did very well thanks to Frozen.
