Which RB would you take?

2

Sep 20, 2023, 10:15 PM

Shipley or Andre Ellington? I think pretty similar runners, hard to tackle but lack the pure breakout runs. I may go Ellington, one of the most underrated players we've had imo. But close.

Ellington had plenty of long TDs. Shipley isnt in the same league as Ellington. Ship is Jamie Harper 2.0

Ellington was constantly busting longer runs but he was constantly getting tackled before the goal line unlike Spiller and Etienne. He has a handful of 50 yard TDs in his career. Maryland, GT and Miami come to mind but not much else. Harper is a tough comparison he was straight power and didn't have the shiftiness of will.

I was kinda joking when I said Ship was like Harper. What I meant was underwhelming. He’s got to be one of the least exciting highly ranked RBs to ever watch play.

Surely most of you are jesting. Have you forgotten that Shipley had three positions on the All ACC team last year? How many times has he been hit and stopped but gained 3 to 5 more yards when needed?

Re: Which RB would you take?

Sep 21, 2023, 9:50 AM

Shipley is a primo college player. He plays like a wild man. But not under control like Ellington. I doubt he will make a starting nfl roster. I think Ellington is the better of the 2.
Question: who was our last great running back? Gallman?????

Our last great running back, ETN. ETN is the best in Clemson history, IMO by a long shot. Gallman was an awesome player, ran very hard and was a huge part in the rise of Clemson football.

I will never get why he is not considered among the very best college running backs to ever play.

Not the best mind you, but among consideration as an elite back.

Sorry, but no way is Shipley Jamie Harper.

1

Sep 20, 2023, 10:27 PM [ in reply to Re: Which RB would you take? ]

Harper had far more power than Ship does. It's the reason Harper had two years in the pros and Shipley will likely struggle to find a spot on a practice squad somewhere.

Hard disagree there. He definitely has pro appeal. Projected around 3-5 round maybe earlier. Late first early 2nd in rookie fantasy drafts if you follow that.

I usually try to work in a Roberto Aguayo type Kicker Project in there somewhere in the first two rounds. Someone that will most likely be a bust, that I can either release or trade for a seventh round pick in the distant future.

Doesn't usually leave much room for a Runningback.

Question for you. You seem to be really dislike Shipley. You have not came out and said it, but reading your posts tend to make me think so. I’m disagreeing with you either, he hasn’t so far lived up to his 5 star billing. What is it about him that has left a sour taste in your mouth? Again, just curious and not attacking you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I dont dislike him, but hes not the great white hope many

Sep 21, 2023, 9:07 AM

Claim him to be either.

Here’s my breakdown;

Pros:

-Incredible effort and will to win—should be a given for the entire team, so it’s sad that this trait stands out so much while he’s been here, but it’s there.
-great hands
-patience with blockers
-average blocking

Cons:
-mistakes yelling at people and losing his cool frequently as leadership
-frequently does not see holes
-does not try to accelerate until he’s in the open field
-mediocre contact balance
-usually cannot turn the corner and win the edge
-no top gear breakaway speed.

Overall he’s been a good RB for us. However, I firmly believe that if we had our typical RB corp during his years here, he simply would have not seen the field nearly as much. You have to go back 10 years to Roderick McDowell to find a RB1 that Ship would have started over. I think his high motor gets him graded on a curve sometimes, and ultimately we’d be better off right now with Mafah as the feature back.

Re: I dont dislike him, but hes not the great white hope many

1

Sep 21, 2023, 11:56 AM

Thanks for the response. I agree with you. I like him but at this point I’m not sure Mafah isn’t the better option.

His tantrum last weekend complete with the towel on his head hasn’t endeared him to the fan base. It’s given a lot of people the freedom to be more honest about him.

Oh yea, he gets tripped up more than anyone in the open field seemingly ever.

I’m pulling for him to have a great game against the Transfer Portal team Saturday.

Ellington was within 3 pounds of that at Clemson in 2012 lol. Seems like you only care about a few pounds, i just see flashes of Ellington making great tough runs but not being a home run threat. That's why I made the comparison. Saying they aren't similar is wild. Andre averaged 5.3 yards per carry with a career high of 1178 his best year. And ships best year is 1182 at 5.6. Eerily similar style backs not sure why you think they're so different.

Closer to Jerome Bettis than Christian McCaffrey. Shipley is a hardnosed runner that has good vision and the ability to make cuts and play in a manner that maximizes his potential. He gets another 2+ yards over what he probably should every time he runs the ball. If we could put his effort and drive in every player we would steamroll every team in the nation.

That said, McCaffrey had gamebreaking speed. The only reason Shipley gets compared to McCaffrey is because they are both white. Next we can queue up the Toby Gerhardt, Peyton Hillis, and Mike Alstott comparisons. This is the other side of the Rassist Card mainly coming from the media - it is a very lazy narrative.

Re: I see it differently cause Ellington had the more explosive runs..

I’m not trying to become a Shipley bashed or anything, but he has 0 rushing TDs this year. He could t get those +2 extra yards from the 2 yd line vs FAU. I don’t know how, but I feel like he has regressed, and he hasn’t been as good as a lot of our 3* RBs that we have had over the past 15 years. I want him to have that breakout, prove-himself- as a 5* RB game, but it hasn’t happened in 2 and 1/4 seasons yet.

Ellington was not known to be a burner either although he did have more long runs, you should probably consider the offense they were in too. Ship would have ripped many long runs if not more in the Boys days.

Re: Which RB would you take?

Sep 21, 2023, 11:05 AM

Ellington was far and away better than Shipley is.

Widest margin of particular skills in order is:

Vision - Ellington had likely the best vision of any Clemson running back in the last 25 years. He saw holes before they ever appeared and could find the cutback lane better than any Clemson running back in that time period as well.

Balance - Ship routinely gets tackled simply because somebody touches his leg and he runs past them. For a guy who runs hard between the tackles, Shipley falls down in space more than any RB I've seen.

Breakaway speed - Even if we ignore the runs from scrimmage (because some in the thread have tried to say the offense let Ellington have long runs) Ellington also had multiple kickoffs returned for TD in his Clemson career. Shipley struggles to run away from the defense even when the entire defense in 10 yards from the LOS. Multiple times in his career Shipley has passed everybody in the defense only to be run down directly from behind. That never happened to Ellington.

Other separating skills:

Breaking tackles - Everybody thinks Shipley is great at breaking tackles because he can hide in a pile and push for a couple of yards. I'm not sure how broken tackle stats are kept, but outside of Spiller Ellington was better than any other Clemson RB I can think of at not allowing the defense to touch him in tight spaces. Ellington may not have broken many tackles, but he caused far more missed tackles that Shipley does for sure.

People forget that Ellington missed half of the season on 2010 and was hampered by several injuries and missed some games in 2011 due to injuries. Those two seasons plus playing behind Spiller as a freshman are what hurt Ellington's overall career stats.

What Ellington showed in the first half of 2010 without a passing game from the offense is what everybody wishes Shipley could do now. Be a playmaker on offense when nobody else is making big plays.
