Game on a Saturday about 15 years ago. He was in a farm truck filling up and I was walking across the parking lot and he said Go Tigers! I was holy #### that’s Danny Ford! Super gracious and chatted with me for a while.

Only time I got to sit in the president's box, he walked in and sat beside me and we chatted off and on for the 1st quarter. He didn't seem at all impressed that he got to sit with me. Had a great big chaw in also.

Meeting him in person at a spring game. He would light up a room when he walked in. He did not care if you were the President of the USA or a $30 iptay member he would treat you the same. Down to earth humble and very charismatic was his natural way. He was a loved and respected Coach by his players and fans. His teams were always motivated played hard and took great pride in being more physical than the other tesm.

Shortly after moving to Seneca in 2009 I attended Danny Ford in the Emergency Department at Oconee Medical Center. He made a point to get to personally know everyone that had a part in his care. I watched him ask a young registrar question after question about his life and goals in life. It was amazing! He then wanted to know about my family and I. After telling him about my son who was about 14 at the time he gave me his phone number and told me to call him when football season came around and he would have my son and I watch a game in his box. Several months later I called him. He remember our conversation and a few hours later I met him at the Food Lion where he gave us two box passes for the next game (GT if I remember correctly). We were able to watch part of the game with him (at that time he apparently did not stay for the entire game most of the time). We have a picture of him and my son from that day hanging on the wall in our "TV/Clemson Room". Yes, I still have his phone number in my phone.

This past football season I saw him at his usual tailgating spot before the GT game (what a coincidence) and told him this story. He remembered the reason for the ED visit which is actually a comical story in and of itself. Of course because of HIPAA I will not share. Lets just say he did not have pleasant things to say about a particular dog he owned at that time.

Have also ran into him in Walmart twice and one of my family members helped him shop. He is just a good guy who happened to be a great football coach.

1. His calling out Monte Kiffin after the NC State game because Kiffing ratted out about some TN recruits that ended up with a refrigerator for their mama. I can still see Kiffin cowering while saying "It wasn't me...It wasn't me..."

2. Arriving late to speak at the Touchdown Club in Anderson. He got his food and sat down to eat but didn't have a spoon. The lady waiting the tables said she would get him one. He reached over and grabbed one from a dirty plate across the table and said "I got one!" The waitress said "That one's dirty." Danny looked at it, licked it off, and said "Not any more!"

3. During a game at UNC, he told ABC Network execs that if they ran a planned hit piece about Clemson recruiting during halftime that he would not bring the team back onto the field. I understand ABC did some quick editing.

I was a patient at Moffitt Cancer Hospital in Tampa in 1990. I had metastatic cancer and I was on my 3rd round of inpatient chemotherapy and I was feeling very depressed. One night about 9 PM, the phone beside my bed rand. It was Danny Ford. We talked Clemson football for 30 minutes. It literally gave me the courage to finish the awful remainder of the chemotherapy sessions and the surgery that followed. I shall never forget him.

Good friend of mine played for Coach Ford in the late 80s. One steaming summer day, in a typical Danny Ford practice, one of the players cramped up with full body cramps.

Coach Ford looked at him rolling on the ground in agony and asked him what was wrong

He said “I’m crapping up coach!”

Coach Ford said “Eat a nanner” and kept walking

The day he the administration removed interim from his job title. The orange pants were pretty special too. When SC’s Coach saw the orange pants I think he said at that time he knew that the coots had lost the game before the first play of the game.

The rest is history. Merry Christmas Coach Ford.

He goes to my dentist in Spartanburg. I know that is weird to drive that far to a dentist, but the dentist is an old family friend of his.i have actually sat in the dentist room with him getting worked on. Just a good ole dude, He has signed a lot of items for me, including all of my 1981 national championship stuff. He is a true Clemson legend who deserves more recognition. He would be hard for kids today to play for him since kids are way softer now.

I helped develop game film in the basement of the P & A back in the day. It took most of the night and when it was finished an assistant would pick it up. Except when they lost. Round about two or three in the morning the phone would ring. It was Coach Ford wanting to know when the game film would be ready. Happily we didn’t lose much at home.

I’ll bet the players dreaded those rare occasions.

Danny was cooking the pig at a Pendleton industrial fabrication shop as part of gathering for the shops customers of which I was one. Usual fare at a BBQ with music, adult beverages and maybe 80 participants. I was shooting the bull with Danny about nothing in particular with 3-4 other guys while we all sipped a beer. At one point Danny wheeled around to the serving line, took his bare hand, and scooped up a handful of baked beans from the serving container which he then gobbled down without breaking stride in the conversation. In second place was watching him pull up to the BiLo in Pendleton and walk inside. The truck was left unlocked with the windows down so I peered in while walking inside. Hanging from the rear view was a leather pouch with a drawstring and a some Taylors Pride or Red Man protruding from the top. Closer inspection revealed that the "pouch" was fashioned from bull testicles which was later confirmed by a mutual friend. Being from Clemson I have many more stories (most are second hand from family members or friends) but they are a bit too colorful for this venue. Was never really sold on Danny as an offensive strategist but as a recruiter he was tireless and second to none IMO. 8 CONSENSUS top 10 classes in a row won't be equaled in my lifetime at Clemson.

My friends and I were at a then freshman practice one particular freshman lineman from Alabama was struggling to complete runs after practice. Danny went to him and asked did he get his workout assignments and did he run. The lineman said yes every night after supper Danny said boy we play football in the daytime at Clemson. Soon after the lineman went home as well as the qb that came with him

Danny came into a full-to-capacity Mac's for lunch. Several people offered him their seats but he told them to stay seated. He grabbed a stool behind the counter and pulled it up to the ice cream freezer where he proceeded to eat his lunch while chatting with us.

Hard to top these wonderful remembrances. I never met him, but I do recall the announcers during the Orange Bowl saying they couldn’t talk to him like they usually do with coaches before a game because he was so active and couldn’t be still long enough. Had me thinking, Danny is for real.
