The defense has been on a steady decline the last three years. We have a better roster that these stats show. It’s coaching or the lack there of. The at South Dakota St is someone to take a hard look at. Pork Chop has got to go.

This is exactly the only problem with the success Clemson has had now. It gives justification to those who say no change is needed.
Extremely happy to be ACC Champ and in the CFP but it’s ignorant to ignore the fact that the defense needs to be better and the way to fix that is a change in leadership/voice in the room.

Maybe he just needs 14 years to accomplish something, liking winning the conference. Oh wait he did that. What coach do we have that has never won a conference championship?

Main stat that is hard to measure is with the game on the line we know that the defense won’t hold. An end of 4th quarter td is guaranteed to be surrendered. My guess is we gave up 7 or 8 tds in the last 5 minutes of games this year. Fortunately some were leads too big to choke away.

That’s funny that you bring that up. Could you also post the amount of time the defense is on the field in the second half? Seems to me that there is a correlation between our offense performance in the second half and the defenses ability to get stops. Defensive performance in most games has been great in the first half.

The defense hadn't been on a steady decline. For total defense, the rankings for the last 3 years:
2022 - 29th 2023 - 8th 2024 - 66th

Those stats need some analysis. We are way better than 66.
For much of the season, huge portions of the yardage allowed were with second and third stringers. Other than our coaches making boneheaded 2nd half decisions against SC and SMU, I feel pretty confident with our starters out there.
Some of that also falls to the offense for shutting it down half the game. That impacts the flow of the game, momentum, and fatigue.

Not sure why we had that drop off in experience when all our grad students finished up and we suddenly had a bunch of sophomores on the field(?)

The stats track with our drop in talent due to Dabo’s NIL stance plus Covid era recruiting

Just look at the Team Defense rankings the last 3 seasons
2022: 22nd 2023: 32nd 2024: 43rd
I don't know what more we have to see. It's not like this defense is devoid of talent either. Just look at the sheer amount of 5 and 4 stars that we have on defense. To make matters worse, we play in the ACC against mediocre offenses. The fact that we don't have a top 10 defense with our talent, playing against the type of competition we see in our conference, is embarrassing.
Barrett Carter Jaedyn Lukus Peter Woods Sammy Brown Demonte Capehart Tre Williams RJ Mickens Payton Page Cade Denhoff Zaire Patterson Sherrod Covil Caden Story TJ Parker Vic Burley Stephiylan Green Jamal Anderson Ronan Hanafin AJ Hoffler Kylen Webb Brendan Strozier Khalil Barnes Avieon Terrell Darien Mayo Corian Gipson Tavoy Feagin Noah Dixon Hevin Brown-Shuler

It does feel frustrating to watch his defense sometimes but

1) Our "total" stats are a bit skewed this year. Our reserves put up some atrocious performances earlier this year while we had big leads. If you look at advanced metrics that filter out garbage time, our defense has been more respectable. Heading into the SMU game the D was 20th in SP+ and 17th in FPI. Source: https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/news/clemson-smu-acc-championship-game-projections-45178
2) Our defense was very, very good last year so it's not like this has been some slow and steady decline under Wes. We had some issues in the secondary during the first half of his first season in 2022, but started playing better later in the season, and then we had a very good defense last year. This year has been a bit of a decline, but it doesn't seem as bad as some people make it out to be.
It feels like our offense gets much more of a pass for bumbling around and doing nothing for entire halves of games than Wes ever gets. Maybe it's because Brent set the bar higher.
This is the kind of thing i see on here:
-Clemson enters halftime with 21-7 lead -Clemson offense gets 3 first downs over next 25 minutes and scores no points -Clemson defense gives up 2 TDs to tie the game -Tigernet loses its mind at Wes for blowing the lead
