I really don’t understand what “gas light” or “gas lighting” means.
I think I do, and then as soon as I think I do, it seems the term morphs.
Help?

But I more or less use it as a joke whenever someone says something I don't like. Like when my wife tells me we're doing something I don't really wanna do I accuse her of gas lighting me.

My wife does it all the time. I told you "something" yesterday! No you didn't. Yes I did.
I usually let this go on for a while until I finally decide to remind her I was out of town yesterday and we never spoke. At which point she will say it was the day before yesterday then. Reality is she screwed up, forgot to tell me, and is making me the scapegoat.

It’s from an old movie called “Gaslight.” 1944. In the movie, a woman keeps telling her husband she sees a light in the house next door. Her keeps telling her she’s wrong, and no one lives next door.
It’s actually him, rummaging around next door trying to find the dead persons treasure.
So to gaslight someone means have a knowing liar who is trying to deceive someone into not believe something they know #### well is true- as in, I know I see that light on even though you tell me there isn’t one.

Like, if you're running around on your old lady and she starts getting suspicious of you and begins asking questions, you would "gaslight her" by calling her crazy, and asking if she's been taking her medicine, accuse HER of cheating etc. You do this to regain control over the narrative and put the opposition on the defense.
You're basically making them question whether what they're seeing and/or experiencing is real by purposefully misconstruing reality or shifting focus to something else.

But it's basically being manipulative so that another person doubts themselves or questions their reality so they'll believe the absurd or blame themselves, sometimes.

2 generations ago you could fix this with a quick slap to the head. now you gotta write a 140 character burn on social media leveraging as many hipster buzzwords1 to gain traction in the algorithms.
