Just a heads up on the Student Section capacity for tonight
Feb 18, 2014, 1:42 PM
|
|
All general engineering students have midterms tonight from 7-9 so its impossible to make it to the game. And to put this number into context, its around 1200 students that can't attend. Some of y'all won't like this excuse and claim "we don't care enough about the program" and yap some more about the student section size but theres only so much things we can handle. Yes I have been to almost every game and yes I was in attendance Saturday. Hope our Tigers get a big win tonight and hopefully my mind will focus enough on the test so I can get it over with in time to see the ending. For those there, cheer extra loud for us future engineers (or possibly those dropping the major after tonight's test lol) and keep us in mind when KJ gets a monster dunk.
Go Tigers! Beat NCSU!

No one is arguing that there aren't valid excuses

And that these don't arise at times.
But tonight, evidently, is an outlier in that a large portion do have a scheduled exam DURING that time. That is not normal, and isn't indicative as an excuse for other games missed.
Not that I really think you need an excuse. Folks can choose to go to games if they want to. But, if you choose not to attend games that you can walk to and get a ticket for free because you find other things more important, then in my mind you officially lose the right to complain about the program.

have a Clemson sporting events calendar for crying out loud?!? They have to learn to schedule exams so they do not interfere with students ability to attend sporting events. C'mon guys!

Many times these aren't single class tests

They are tests across an entire program/discipline and are planned WAY in advance and held on specific nights of the week so to not interfere with each other

interesting but that still leaves over 15,000 students. not sure how much student seating there is but there should still be and ample number to fill in even with half a'ed attendance.
You've got what you've got test wise but it seems strange you'd have a midterm a little over a month into a four month semester.

Standardized tests have a testing block.

For example, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, & ENGR all have testing blocks at night on Tues, Wed, Thursday. Smaller classes, like an Econ I am taking, has tests during class.

Appreciate the update

Let's look at the fact that 1,200 students can't go. There are 16000 undergrads and about 3,000 grad students at Clemson. We only have to fill 2,000 seats. Logistically, even if y'all can't go, there are plenty that can go

This is just one major and only two classes with tests

for general engineering, ENGR 1020 and ENGR 1410. I'm sure there are others with tests/work/labs/etc. I think some of y'all forget that we're here to prepare ourselves for our anticipated careers. I try to go to as many sporting events possible because I love the games, love my school and I miss my high school sporting memories. However, most people don't care about these events as much as I do, which is sad. Accepting more out-of-state/foreigners may add flair to our academic success but it does harm the passion for the university in my opinion, because there are less family bred Tigers. I'm not creating excuses for anybody but just presenting the facts. I want to see more people at games, who wouldn't? The difference between The John vs Duke is far greater and noticeable than The John vs Georgia Tech.
Just remember, saying 16,000 students remaining should go to the game is easier said than done. We all have our business to take care of and this is the time for tests galore and such, especially since the snow days.
And yes, 74, this is our midterm as its a large portion of our grade. It does seem a bit early but thats just the way things go I guess

Of course no one will fault anyone from choosing academics over athletics.
The normal debate is the apathetic state of our student fans that cause them to prioritize things at other times that in fact cause them to feel the "need" to miss the games.
But I don't criticize folks for choosing to user their time how they see fit. I envy folks the chance to see Clemson games so easily and cheaply, but I'm just a guy who has gotten older and moved farther away.

I've been going to football games with my family ever since I was in diapers and it would definitely make matters harder to attend once I start paying for tickets myself. One thing with basketball is that I just don't think the sport is big in the state, thus many are just not interested. Ive seen a good amount of students attend baseball games this weekend because, imo, its more of a bigger game in the state. You see what we can do with football too.

Thanks for making the effort to attend the majority of the games as you apparently do, and good luck on your exam tonight.

You're there for the education and are getting a "Dm" good one.
The sports fan stuff is icing on the cake and will waiting for you after you put a beat down on the mid term.
Good luck!!
