Don't punish the Michigan players?

20

Nov 3, 2023, 9:29 PM

That's what I keep hearing. "They didn't do anything wrong. Why should they be punished for what the coaches did? Let them go to the B1G Championship game. Let them go to the playoffs. Give them a chance to win the national championship. Don't punish them."

I look at it a slightly different way. The team cheated. Probably has been cheating for more than a year. We don't know, and never will know, exactly how much it helped them? Did it help them beat Ohio State last year? Did that win help their recruiting this year? Etc. etc.

But, here is my perspective.

What about the team that misses out on the B1G championship game? They didn't cheat. Why punish them?
What about the team that finished 5th in the voting for the playoff? Why punish them? Why let a team that cheated get into the playoffs and keep them out?

When you don't punish a team who cheated, you do punish a team who didn't cheat.

Michigan beat us out for Rashan Gary by hiring his high school coach. They did that with several other players. Stealing signs during the game is technically legal, but video taping opponents ahead is against the rules. A long with scandal Harbaugh got caught lying about, he is turning into the modern day Lou Holtz

Lou Holtz said it was deplorable - so there ya go.
By the time I was 10, the QB was calling the offense on the field.
That went the way of the Doodoo when they started sending WRs with the play.
It would be more fun if the QB was the one calling the plays - can’t put that genie back in the bottle though…

Now its through the sidelines due to Steve Spurriers influence

Spurrier liked being a coach that was the brains behind his QB. Everyone has copied that approach since. They could put the sign stealing to rest if they would use the technology the NFL uses to send in plays.

Michigan should not be included in the playoff for NC. It deprives schools that play by the rules to compete fairly. If there is not punishment for M then other teams have no reason not to cheat.

I agree. The program is tainted, and unfortunately the players...

Nov 3, 2023, 9:49 PM

...may be part of the collateral damage. You can't simply punish the coaches while the team/program benefits in a huge way from their malfeasance. It's a bad situation all around.

Life ain’t fair. People lose their jobs every day bc their leaders made terrible errors in judgement. Give them a free transfer and an extra year. But you can’t put a team that was proven to have cheated in any championship game. That’s ludicrous.

A former player is the one who turned them in. The players knew and still went through with it

This is a complete team effort on this cheating scandal.

The players definitely knew. One video shows coaches and players pointing in the air to indicate pass. They all knew

If it were any school besides an old-line blue blood this would not be a discussion. It's ridiculous.

The players got their pass last year...when they made it the playoffs...potentially as a result of cheating...

The NCAA will most likely sit on their hands until next year. If the NCAA has seen the evidence (probably turning a blind eye), they should ban Michigan from a bowl this year. That would force the CFP to drop them from their rankings.

Meatchicken players aren't even literate. Football is all they have. They shouldn't be punished. Ban Harbaugh for life but don't punish players.
