New Boat

I am thinking on getting one.
Please don't post the old line (money down a black hole) as though you were talking about a heartless woman like my latest Bride.
My boat is 23 years old and has been through a lot. It has been fun. I bought it off the internet in Greenwood after searching for "small pontoon". It has been a fun, comfortable platform for fishing, mostly I troll. 90% of the time I use a trolling motor, just got a new 36v one. Speeding up and down the lake grows old, taking time to look at the always changing shoreline does not.
I think pontoons to be the best lake boat for folks like me. You can just ram them onto shore at islands to let your dogs run. They are not fast, but I have friends with some of the fastest ski boats nearby when needed. They even buy me beer.
The best buy for a small platform seems to be the 16 or 18 ft Bass Buggy from Bass Pro. I prefer small. Most times it is just me (my dog died). I can get one for about $25K as I already have top electronics and accessories. Those two front chairs lift out as I don't need them.

Here is an old photo of my present boat. It is about 16' but more narrow. I have replaced most things on it including the motor (broke right now) I have replaced sections of the floor and the top a few times, and seating just last year.
This has been a fun boat and a good investment, but it might be time for new.

I bought a 15' mini-pontoon a few years ago for ~16K. The deck is 7'x14' and it does really well on my 11-acre farm pond. It easily holds 6, is perfect for my wife and four dogs, fishing, bird watching, and chilling (with wine). It is light enough to be easily handled. Its deck lines up exactly with the deck of my boat house so my wife and I can get on/off without a delicate balancing act - important when you're in your 70's like we are. We bought it from Boats Direct (i think). Maybe something you would consider?
In enjoy your posts.

My son is a student at Clemson and I think he is looking for a boat for his last couple of years in town. If you are interested in selling, he might be interested. Just let me know and one of us can take a look.

That is exactly the way that I feel about my Baby boy that died. There will never be another like him and I know that without any doubt. But that isn't the only reason I haven't gotten another dog that I could love, the biggest reason is that I'm almost 72, and it would be right for me to bring another in my home and love me, then I pass away and leave him with that pain bc I know they can and will love their owners.

I have never trusted anyone or anything more than I trusted him, and I believe that he had the trust for me, and I say without any doubt that we equally trusted each other. He was an American Rottweiler, and they're just a little smaller than the German Rot.
I don't know how true what they about the two Rottweiler breeds, but it is said by the know it all's that the American Rot is easier to train and that they are exceptionally smart, and mine was a very smart animal. I can honestly say that he was by far the easiest dog that I've ever trained, whatever I taught him he never forgot.
Family and friends that didn't come around that often were always uneasy around him bc he was very protective of me, and my wife. If I allowed people in my house, he knew that it was OK for them to be in the house but he would never take his eyes off them. He would just growl at them bc they were in the house, but if they started moving around, he would sit up and stare at them with his ears folded back and I think he was just trying to intimidate them and he did.
The only time I ever heard him growl at anybody was when we were parked at the grocery store and a dude walked pretty close to my truck and he sent them a message. And one of my neighbors down the street knocked on the door and just came right in and he got put on the floor and snapped a couple of times. Now my wife did tell me that when I was away from home, and if somebody knocked at the door he would get very loud with growling at whoever was at the door, and bc of that we agreed that she shouldn't ever let anyone in if I wasn't at home bc I had seen when he was only about a year old that he was exceptionally protect of her. He was a exceptionally good pet, but there was never any doubt in mine or my wife's mine that he would give his life to protect ours.
If I were in my late 50's early 60's, I have no doubt that another American Rottweiler puppy would have come to my house about a year after my Baby boy died. One more thing, with all the kids that have come to our house mostly bc we have a pool, I never not once seen him threaten a kid, he loved kids, especially the ones that would play ball with him, he loved chasing a ball, and they would have to chase him a little, but when they stop chasing him, he would give the ball back to them so they would throw it again...

Great ocean boat. I have a neighbor with similar, but one motor. I have been on it countless hours. Guides on Hartwell use that type boat as do many serious trollers.
A pontoon is more comfy on the Lake for us old folks, and fish don't know. My Bride might object if I bought that.
You have a great boat.

Thanks, she handles the ocean well. Pontoons are great lake boats. My buddy has a tritoon he uses on Lake Moultrie. The comfort and roominess is unmatched to boats like mine on the lake. Enjoy your new boat and get what you want.

Ever think of just repowering your old craft with a nice new quite fuel efficient four stroke? You could get a new motor put on for less than 10k with 10year warranty and put a few K into the old craft to spruce her up to your liking and save thousands

The 2nd four stoke 60 on it now was more than 10K and is broke. Plus as I posted before, some one stole the cowl off it. Repair might be 3-4K or less. Floor board is giving way and I am no longer a young man.
New might be good as few enjoy a boat for 23 years. Keep in mind I live on a lake and my boat gets more use than folks who have to tow in. Part of lake living is having a boat.

Yeah, had some other work done. Buying a motor and having it installed is not cheap. Every couple years a thousand is required to keep it up. I use only no ethanol gas, but they still require things I cannot do.

Regardless of using ethanol free gas, as an X mechanic, you should still use a gas additive bc just a small amount of ethanol in the gas wreaks havoc on valve seals and causes really hard carbon deposits on the valves that damage the valve seats especially if you have mix oil in your gas tank or if it has injected oil mixing with the gas going into the cylinders...
I have a ZERO turn mower that 15 years old and had gas without an additive, and the engine has never fail to start not once. I do believe in the gas additives, and I've mostly used STA-BIL 360!!!

In all my life, Rosey was the best friend I ever had. If the boat or truck rolled she demanded to be in.
Now I have the Bride's cats. I like cats and enjoy them, but they aint a dog. I spent $1K on one at the vet this month.
I have been reluctant to get another dog. Rosey just showed up one day after being abandoned as did the other dog in the photo Shores. I miss those guys.

i can still tear up when i think of our canine girls and guys.got our 1st dog when i was at ft. jackson in '74-an airedale who we named otis.one of the great dogs of all time.he came out of n. augusta.chose an airedale because my father-in-law bred them and the mrs. grew up with the pups and all.right now we have 2-another airedale(5 yrs,) who goes by the name, arthur macarthur-known to us as mack.the other is a welsh terrier named mr. higgins(1.5 yrs.)wanted to name him cheese for obvious reasons, but was overuled.airedales were bred by crossing the smaller(24-5 lbs)welsh terriers with bloodhounds and or otterhounds for size.mack is an oorang variety weighing 85-90lbs.bred for size and hunting.there are a lot of videos worth watching about these 2 breeds on you tube.having functional brains they can be both very entertaining and challenging.

I used to often go to coast fishing for King Mackerel where a work buddy (SGT Nesbitt) had a boat and house trailer. Some times it was hard work reeling them in, some days - nothing. Once in a storm a Coast Guard plane came out and ordered us to shore.
Ocean aint like the lake near Clemson, nor are the fish.
The lake record for Striper here is 56lbs and catfish more, so some big ones are here. The normal striper here is about 10#s. I don't fish much in Summer as you kids on jet skis take over. Mostly I fish for Largemouth Bass. Mostly I just hug the shore looking for a bird I have not seen lately. Hartwell is full of fish and ducks.
I guess boating is different for all.

One deal is Lake Hartwell lake level goes up and down each day. The plan is to drop it 5ft in Fall and keep it up over Summer. Times with drought or rain move lake level up and down. Sometimes I have to adjust often. I live in a nice cove, but have to adjust my floating dock as the water goes in or out.
I use the pontoon as a tug boat to pull it in and out. I need a working boat for that.

If your budget allows 18' over 16', I definitely would go with 18'. Those big wake boats and bigger center consoles on Lake Hartwell nowadays, that extra 2ft will make a big difference in your ride. Same size motor on both would likely be very close in speed especially if you are just a cruiser, it wouldn't make a difference.

My rule for every purchase, buy very good quality in very good condition and maintain it well. Just sold my boat after having it five years for more than I paid for it : kept it covered, dry docked, and well maintained. It was a gem.

I am very sorry about hearing that best buddy passed on bc I'm still suffering from ine passing a couple years ago but it still hurts as much as it did the day that he died. This 4th of July was full of thoughts of bc of how he wanted to catch and kill whatever was making that loud noise in our neighborhood. I found myself crying and laughing about my thoughts of him and how bad he wanted get that noise, and my wife saw me and ask what was wrong and I told just thinking about our Baby boy and how he hated that firework noise, and she admitted that she still sheds tears thinking about him time to time.
But for the boat, I've always felt that a person should have what he/she could afford once they retired, and if the boat that you want is in your budget, I think that it would be a terrible thing if you didn't get it if that is what gives you pleasure during the summer and winter months if you have a heater to stay warm in the winter months. If that is the pic of the one that you want, it is a very nice looking pontoon boat. So, I ask why is it not in your yard right now bc you're not going to get any younger, and you might as well get it while you can still enjoy it. If you're like me with taking really good care of what you have, get it now and use it as long as you can, then sell it and get most of your money back out of it when you find yourself not really needing it any longer, man go get the boat, there is no better time than right now, and enjoy it thoroughly Get up and go get it!!!

You will love that boat Tug...I've owned two pontoon boats and they are great fun for the family I had 24' but that one you show are great. I gave my last one to my son and his family but I barely go out on the lake very much.I do miss it though.
