This election will be a referendum on Medicare/Soc. Security

Medicare might not change for those 55 and older but, it would for everybody else. Those in the 45-54 years old range will be more impacted because they are late in their earning years.
Lowering Social Security COLAs will impact everybody becuase that will also impact those already on social security. Privatizing social security is also something that needs to be debated.
It's a debate we must have. It's a debate we need to have. In my opinion, we can no longer afford generous Medicare and Social Security benefits for our grandparents, parents nor ourselves.
The choice is clear. If you want to overhaul Medicare and Social Security, you vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket. If you don't want to overhaul Medicare and Social Security, you vote for the Obama-Biden ticket.

And if it is then Romney/Ryan definitely lose.
But Ryan bolsters the Republicans in the economic debate, primarily those that are truly concerned about the debt.

It's in the entitlement programs of Medicare and Social Security.

Doesn't matter, these are programs that affect everyone.

Cuts or changes aren't as popular as you think.
Making the campaign about these programs won't win votes.

these programs, regardless. A politician with Ryan's previous proposals is not going to be on the national stage without those programs being put up for debate.

I think Obama will try to make it about those programs. The pubs should try to frame it around concrete, specific plans to reduce the debt.

It has to be talked about, but the GOP needs to make people focus on debt reduction. They can't approach it from the standpoint of we are reforming those programs.

But won't get into the specific programs that are adding to it? That sounds...pointless. Also, knowing politics today, it sounds about right.

First guy says it's a referendum on all those programs.
Tdrake says the pubs won't/can't present it that way.
I agreed with tdrake and added that I think Obama and Co. will try to make it about those things (pubs want to take away your free stuff).
I'm not at all saying it won't be talked about or that it shouldn't be talked about. I'm just saying pubs are going to try to make it about that, rather about making tough decisions (cuts, reforms) to begin chipping away at our debt problem.

The people are not stupid. They know, we know that

the details are what count. Nixon said in 1968 that he had a "secret plan" to end the Viet Nam war. It was years and thousands of deaths later before it ended. The public now demands to know "how are you going to do it?".

It just won't be a referendum on these in particular.
If it becomes what the original poster suggests then it would be a disaster for the GOP. But they will definitely be part of the discussion, but within a broader context.

depends on what we mean by "referendum"
Aug 11, 2012, 2:36 PM
|
|
If they talk about paying down the debt, they will have to talk about these programs as well as the military. And if they make paying the debt their main focus, those programs become the forefront of the debate. Maybe that's not a referendum, but it will force people to analyze how they feel about those issues.
It will be interesting, because the pubs hate talking about cutting the Military and Medicare, while the dems hate talking about cutting other social programs like welfare, and medicaid. Yet, both military and social programs need to be cut and making the argument for cutting one but not the other just tells us you are a partisan hack.

Great. Business as usual. Once again it will come down to both sides voting strictly for (R) or (D) with "undecided" voters voting based on which side is able to get them to believe the most lies and voting against the other candidate.
Love our political process.

This is a sad and uniformed thought process. If we do not act soon, "Medicare as we know it" will die in 2022. End, finish, be bankrupt! Period the end!
