Saying, is this old man shown on the porch of the home known as Fort HiLL the infamous politician John C Calhoun..
who was the original landowner of our campus before bequeathing it to his Daughter who bequeathed it to her Philly-born husband Thomas Green Clemson whose name we cherish when we yell C L E M in Cadence Count?
If you notice, as is with many old pics of now beautiful & well-kept structures, the owners back then didn’t or couldn’t afford to keep their buildings & grounds in tip-top shape. You will notice that the mansion is a bit worn looking as is the inhabitant.
Also..shrubbery was hardly ever used around a large house as this but today it is full of Boxwoods, etc.

Can’t be Thomas G. Clemson. He’s not green.

John C had wild flowing white hair while this bro had shorter hair.
Either way, he’s looking forlorn or just simply relaxed and thinking about giving the estate away due to taxes and ingeniously thinking about calling it CLEMSON A & M as a write-off!
LOL~

That's Thomas Green Clemson in the photo, which was taken in 1877. Calhoun died in 1850.

But, I don’t think natives considered it “ownership”.

Before the natives, who were of Oriental influence, there were others

Who were here first even b/4 the Natives (aka Indians) and so on & on. It’s who’s here now that counts, I suppose.
But know I’ve always admired our native Indians, their many incredible tribe & personal names, their natural way of life, knowing there is a higher power which they respected, how they chose a Chief and how they respected the Elder, innately realizing that the land & its animals were their survival kit for life, etc.

Regardless of who was there first, Calhoun wasn't the original owner. He inherited it from his mother-in-law, who purchased it from someone else.

I don't know if I've ever seen a rendering of Calhoun w/ a beard, and the guy in the photo has one. Maybe Calhoun had a beard at some point - I'm not certain he didn't. But that observation, along with the fact that casual (non-portrait) photographs were more common in the decades after Calhoun (who died in 1850), makes me think this isn't likely him.
But maybe it's Thomas Green Clemson. Not sure of that either. But I wonder.

Based on seeing the closed windows closed on the second floor and open on the first floor, TGC must have only been able to afford A/C on the second floor!

Calhoun never gave his daughter the property because women could not own property then. If it was legal and he did give itbto his daughter, our favorite team would be the Calhoun Tigers
