Does our culture still work?
Nov 30, 2023, 11:38 AM

I’m not asking as a critique because I don’t have the answer. But with all the changes in college football and the increasing influence of NIL and portal, I just wonder how well we are connecting with student athletes and if our way of doing things is still as attractive as it once was?
If more guys really are defecting, as rumored, you just feel like we have to change some things up to stem this tide.
For whatever reason, it seems like this entire season has just been uncomfortably off kilter…

Our culture as far as graduating players, turning boys into men who will benefit society, and creating a family atmosphere is still one of the best in the nation. Now as far as competing for National Championships in the future, we have fallen way behind. Will need to make some minor changes, but none so drastic we start reading about players in police reports.

I think you raise an interesting question: Would we Tiger fans be willing to be merely a Top 25 programs which occasionally gets in the Top 10 in order to keep graduating the kind of young men of whom we can be proud ?
I guess another way of asking is - How far are we willing to degrade our culture to get in the CFP ?
I still believe that we can be Top 10 material and be proud of our student-athletes, but we have to change a few things in our approach - and slightly broaden our perception of who can fit into our culture.

If we are not trying to win at the highest level, whats the point?

Im sorry, but this isnt Church League, or Upward League, or a Boys Finishing School. This is major D1 college football. Now if your argument is, well, maybe we (as in the Clemson community) dont want to partake in that moving forward, then, ok, different argument. But until then, we need to utilize the tools at hand to win championships. I dont think you have to recruit/pay/buy a team full of thugs to do it either, but you may have to make some compromises in how you market yourself (Clemson).

Pioneer,
I am not taking a position - I am merely stating the choices that lay in front of us. Is elite status more important than our "culture" ? Where is the proper balance between the two ?

I would be willing to accept that. If fact I would bet that about 97% of the colleges would accept that.

Great talent that can compete with anyone. We might end up in a few more close games than during our title runs, but I think Clemson will be the playoff picture every year.
Are we Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, etc...not exactly, but we never have been. Not a knock on Clemson.

I have enjoyed the closer games - not the ones we lost, but I kinda got tired of being able to leave in the 3rd quarter.

A; sort of. But the whole "Just say NO to big NIL money and choose the Clemson family instead" isn't exactly resonating with a lot of difference-makers that actually play the game. If the world was filled with 5 stars from religious families we'd be golden. But it ain't and we need to adapt.

SLWCU....you already know that answer......

No amount of culture is going to keep kids from leaving. That has been proven. Heck Beaux would have been culled from the herd at BAMA or UGA a long, long time ago. He played way more at CLEM despite underperforming his ranking. And what did Dabo & Co. do????---treat him like GOLD. And what does Beaux do???----BAILS.
This isn't taking a shot at Beaux....he's a great kid---not an alpha, but a good third or fourth WR.....but culture isn't keeping kids like him. And it hasn't for several years.
THE DECISION(s) to help stem the tide have already been made. Should they have been done sooner....yep, but at least they have been made---and were a while back. We are just now seeing the first fruits.
More to come..........

Maybe the question I should have asked was if the Vision, and how we get there, still work...

Yep. It works for the players who are willing to put in the work and earn playing time. It also works for the players who put in the work bu don't get playing time. It doesn't work for the players that want to get rich quick.

Dabo does a great job with graduation rates and we should all be a proud of that but this “ our players are all upstanding Christian Young men.. and all other top programs only recruit morally comprised convicted felons” narrative is hyperbole.
We have had players with their share of off-field issues, perhaps a bit less than some other top programs. but it’s not like Clemson is a monastic academy.

The problem is that Dabo placed too much importance on culture when we were winning big, rather than recognizing that the main reasons for our high level success was having great coaches and generational talent at key positions.
Of course, team culture is really important, and we are proud of the culture Dabo built. I know we've gotten players who value that culture, but the main reason they chose Clemson is because they want to play for a team that wins at a high level and prepares them for the NFL. Lately, we haven't been doing that as well and recruiting has followed suit.
