Does Offense Suffer from Paralysis by Analysis?

Sep 7, 2021, 2:29 PM

We have this phrase in my engineering profession ...basically means it takes too long to complete a task trying to work out every minor detail (which is not always a bad thing in engineering).

I know we have smart, high quality players, but do we need to simply things offensively? I hear coaches talking about "not making the right read" way too often....and we see receivers running side by side multiple times against UGA (assume someone made the wrong read!). That second it takes a player to diagnose the defense and "read" what to do is a long time. Just simplify things...run the play as it's drawn up and go win it because we have better players! We all know our coordinator has an engineering degree, right?

Tired of watching our players stare at the sidelines....

I dont think its possible to make that garbage scheme

any more simple. It needs to be trashed and rebuilt from scratch with some imagination, modernization, and effectiveness!

For what’s it’s worth, you might be onto something. Looking back at DJ U’s recruiting profile the scout stated the following towards the end re: DJ weaknesses:
“ Can still improve going through progressions and finding secondary receivers as well as escaping pressure. ”

Link below at the end. But imo it sounds like the same thing that he struggled with vs Georgia: issues reading progression, escaping pressure and finding receivers. So it may be that we need to adjust or simplify the offensive playbook for him for now.

Another related perspective:
Is our OC capable of making adjustments on the fly? If somethings not working, do we have to wait until we see it on game film before we make adjustments?

Instead of having the QB try to stay in a collapsing pocket, can we roll left or roll right?
If QB1 looks like an immobile deer in the headlights, can we talk to him on the bench while we bring in a mobile, scrambling QB ... for more than 1 play?
