I think they are technically red dirt country (?), but have a lot of banjo and fiddle. I love to listen to them while I work out.

One of my favorite bands! Awesome that Felker got away from Miranda Lambert and back with his wife, and off the booze. The Bird Hunter may be the best song ever written lyrically!

But yeah Turnpike is not bluegrass. lol. If you like Turnpike check out Jason Boland and the Stragglers. Listen to Comal County Blue and Lucky I Guess and Chesp Bourbon Whiskey and Pearl Snap Shirts. His cover of the Hag’s song Rainbow Stew and Don Williams’ Living on Tulsa Time are absolute gold! Real country music right there.

Not to highjack this thread but I saw the Troubadours last fall with Reckless Kelly, another great Red Dirt group. Also check out the other 2 Braun brothers in Micky and the Motorcars!

Town Mountain and the Steep Canyon Rangers are two really good Bluegrass groups from NC.

I'm friend with the Earls banjo player, Charlie Cushman ...... guess he still plays with them. Charlie is about as good as they get and does a lot of studio work in Nashville. I've been playing banjo for a long long time, but no where near Charlie's league.

Chekc out Noam Pikelny ...... a young Bela Fleck.

Here's Noam playing Wheel Hoss. I've known Noam for about 10 years ,,,,,, great guy and a good friend of the late Jimmy Rollins, also a great banjo player and Clemson Mechanical Engineering graduate.

If you live in the Upstate, there is a bluegrass jam every Friday night at the Oolenoy Community House near Pumpkintown. Free to the public, and pretty enjoyable. Not unusual to have musicians as young as 10 playing with others in their 70s.

Grew up woodshedding Earl, Sonny and JD. When I got to high school I found out bluegrass wasn't cool so I got an electric guitar and did the rock thing. When I grew up I realized that bluegrass is cool because I dig it.

Now I'm a semi-professional musician in upstate SC. I stand to make tens of dollars and experience minimal fame and fortune. And that's cool.

I like it in small doses. If it's exceptional music being made, I can listen a little longer.

I have a childhood friend who was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year this past year in one of the bluegrass associations (or the association, not very familiar with it all). He didn't win but I've heard him sing and play and the talent is as good as any I've heard.

A few of you guys mentioned Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. That was my introduction to bluegrass gospel. I still have a few of their tunes on my phone that will come up in rotation. It's a good sound.

I couldn't in a thousand years select my favorite instrument and I've picked guitar for over half a decade. Imo, it's more about the man who is playing than the instrument. James Taylor is probably my favorite artist but there are hundreds near to him who play other instruments including violin, fiddle, piano, flute, horns of all kind and even a drummer or two.

I do! I like traditional bluegrass and the newer string bands. Got to see a lot of really good groups in Augusta at the Banjo B Que. Saw Ricky Skaggs, Doc Watson, they were awesome. Also saw Chatham County Line, Old Crow Medicine Show (with the original cast, they were better to me then) Avett Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass, and Trampled by Turtles. You can listen to it on speakers and it is good but you have to experience it live. Been a fan since the first time I saw it.
Going to see TBT in Red Rocks this July.
