Dirt Raid Offense.

12

Jul 22, 2023, 12:10 PM

Listening to several videos on youtube. Players and coaches interviews. There were several on "meet the freshmen." (I'm sure if you go to youtube you'll find them easily.) Two OL were being interviewed. They said "Coach Riley calls it the Dirt Raid offense, not the Air Raid offense."

I love it. And, it is a more accurate description of what the offense he runs does.

Whatever or however how you want to put it, the name is based off “Air raid”. We will pass the ball. A lot.

If people are at all confused on how the offense will run, it will be passing.

Clemson will also run the ball, a lot.

The offense will not be the Mike Leach/Hal Mumme Air Raid where you throw the ball 50+ times a game.

Last year TCU threw the ball 30 times per game and ran it 38 times per game. Finished 39th in passing offense and 31st in rushing offense.

Riley has better talent this year. I expect those numbers to go up. But, I expect them to still be balanced. His offense will run the ball so well that the D can't live all day by putting 5 or 6 men in the box. Defenses may run a 4-2-5, but one of those safeties have to have run responsibility. (They can't just put 3 safeties 12 yards off the line and dare you to run the ball.

I think this style sets up better for the explosive play of +50 yard scoring pass. That's the stat where TCU's offense was most impressive. I think the hurry up methodical dink and dunk of the ball lends to a safety or corner biting/sleeping occasionally. It should be more exciting to watch than what we've seen the past three years....

Agree completely.

You have a much better chance making an explosive play (20+ yards) when you force the defense to cover the entire field every play.

Sometimes it is best to not post things you imagined as if they were fact as it may seem silly

Here are some stats from last year

Miss St led college football passing the ball 68.5% of the time with a traditional air raid offense

Clemson ranked #66 passing the ball 47.6% of the time

TCU ranked #85 passing the ball 45.9% of the time with the Riley “dirt raid”

Where you will see the real difference is yards per pass. TCU ranked #18 in yard/pass attempt and Clemson ranked #86

You will see guys catch the ball in wide open space with no one around them, unlike last year

If spring game is any indication

Jul 22, 2023, 1:21 PM

I didn't see any open receivers

Hope it's just a matter of them not knowing the offense yet

Half the WRs didn’t play in the spring game. Of course Hamp Greene isn’t going to get separation against Nate Wiggins

It will be 50/50 run/pass… if anything we will run it more than pass, we will just be more explosive passing. You should probably read up on his offense or just watch old games he coached. Running fuels this offense and is the backbone, not passing. I know the internet allows anyone to post any thought they have the moment they have it, but in the future maybe don’t?

This is just embarrassingly, blatantly wrong.

"Dirt Raid" is what I thought we ran last year. I can't count the number of passes last year that were thrown in the dirt.

Dana Holgorsen 1st veered to the Ground

Jul 22, 2023, 4:21 PM

Of all the Air Raid coaches Dana Holgorsen was the 1st I know of that started putting a lot more value on running the football.
After all the early defense for Air Raid offenses was simply - dropping 8 "or more" into coverage if all the O was going to do was pass it.
Taking advantage of where the safeties line up and getting them more committed to the box is vital!

I don't care what you call it. As long as the offense moves the football and matriculates up and down the field on most defenses!

Tomato - To-ma-toe!

Let's call it the: "move the ball offense"!

As long as we can score points, and a lot of them, they can call it whatever they like. I am optimistic about this team and the new OC!

You can see Chad’s influence already

Jul 22, 2023, 5:43 PM

He would always tout wanting to run a Smashmouth Spread during his tenure - though that never really happened.

I see he has gotten to the players and Riley to rebrand to Dirt Raid.
