Difficult decisions ahead

College football is a professional sport now. It's time we accepted that reality.

If players do not perform for an NFL franchise, they get cut.

Dabo does not want to do this. We all know that his belief is "till graduation." But that's not going to work anymore. We have several players that do not contribute coming back next year. Most of them need to be told to transfer somewhere else.

RB: Keith Adams and Jarvis Green
WR: Cole Turner
OL: Dietrick Pennington, Ian Reed, Watson Young
DE: Markus Dixon and Caden Story
LB: Dee Crayton, CJ Kubah-Taylor, Drew Woodaz
CB: Myles Oliver
S: Kylen Webb, Robert Billings, Joe Wilkinson
K: Robert Gunn

This is what everyone else is doing. If you aren't performing, you can't stay on the roster and get paid. Not anymore.

He's a 5th year senior, so he's gone regardless.

But yeah, he should have been cut. Along with Denhoff.

IMO Denhoff outplayed Parker on Saturday. That’s not to suggest that he’s as good as Parker, but this year he’s shown he’s able to do some productive work.

Can this apply to TNetters also?

Although not difficult or sad, Francis Marion needs to be on any cut list.

That will happen regardless. Dabo has proved that he will fire coaches.

Now it's time to cut players. He's been unwilling to do that.

And for admirable reasons.

Yep. He’s proven he’ll fire coaches.

To turnover the roster and bring in all the players we’re going to need, he’s going to have to run off 10-12 players.

Great post. I've got to believe that was part of the tears from Dabo. The realization and acceptance.

I would treat the rest of the year as an NFL pre-season. Play different players, most of all Vizz, and see what you got. May be surprised with some. Firm believer in that practice and game time can tell you a lot.

That sounds like a solid idea. It leads to another question: Which would the more bitter pill, Adapting to the purely business roster management style or allowing someone else to do it?

Only difference is NFL players make/have made at least the league minimum. The players you mentioned aren’t making >$50,000. Cutting the player would lead them back into likely poverty.

I agree with this and it's at the very heart of this conversation. Dabo has virtually painted himself into a corner. Players and staff. When recruiting, he's telling these kids, "you're my guy. We want you at Clemson." Going into the portal to get talent (to Dabo) is telling these same kids "I lied". I feel that is abhorrent to him. Same with some of the staffers. He wants to give them a chance to succeed. He's telling them that he believes in them. Now he has to tell them it's not working out. And again, I feel that is something his conscience won't let him do.

As far as players is concerned, you're only allowed so many players on the roster. If he could keep everyone he recruited AND go into the portal, he would. But that's not the reality.

For the staffers? It's time THEY face the reality that it's not working out.

No doubt, this is a business where the CEO(coach) is making $11.5 million a yr. and his board members(assistant coaches) are making $10 million a yr. It's time to get with the times.

That's really what has made this so frustrating , is we have been playing the game with one arm tied behind our back. While everybody else has been building teams and filling rosters with players of good value, like a complete free agency in the NFL setup. Just take a look at our 3 Transfer players , they are playinf good. Get rid of all those bad recruiting gets and let's put together a team... I'm down with that now!!

Go Tigers!! 🐅 💪

Disagree about Cole Turner, Dee Crayton, Drew Woodaz (he’s already playing ST), (?) you got inside info about CJ Kubah-Taylor (?), Joe Wilkinson, or Robert Gunn (doesn’t he have another year? If so, he might be next year’s punter).

Cole Turner will be going into his 5th year. He doesn't start and isn't even a quality backup. It's time to be real about him.

Dee Crayton will be going into his 4th year. Kobe McCloud and Jamal Anderson are ahead of him. Get someone better from the portal to compete for a starting job right away.

Drew Woodaz, Kubah-Taylor and Wilkinson will be going into year 3 and will be buried on the depth chart again. Again, you can find guys from the portal that can compete to start. None of them will.

Robert Gunn will be a 5th year senior. Jack Smith will be as well. There's no sense in keeping him on the roster as a backup kicker/punter.

This is the era of 105 scholarships. That means you can keep your 85 man roster and bring in 20 portal guys a year plus or minus graduation and transfers. It doesn’t keep Dabo from “til graduation” with all the legacies and family roster spots. If they develop - great. If they flounder - they can still graduate and wear the uniform on Saturdays at home non conference games. The overall talent evaluation is incredibly suspect above all else going on now. Maybe it’s trying to fit square pegs in round holes but it’s just more slow and soft and bad football IQ for 4 seasons now.

That's why Dabo has to go.

It's an inevitability.

The longer we wait the more it will cost because we will continue to lose ground until change occurs.

Do it now and start reallocating this money.

I'll say it again. Go get Kurt Cignetti

He'll bring half his team if they're better than what we have. That's what he did when Indiana hired him.

If we don't get him , Florida will. Watch

I don't know! I'm old fashioned, and I know it, and super competitive in everything that I do, and expect those teams that I pull for (Clemson) to be too ....... in all sports. But Dabo's goals, and mine, are still the same ...... recruit great high character kids, prepare them for being great adults, graduate them, and make them better men. If we can't do that and win, then I don't want a bunch of undesirable players whose only interest is to be paid playing football on our campus representing Clemson. I am not sure what all of our problems are, but I think putting it all on NIL and the portal is an easy cop out. Personally, I think there were too many guys reading press clippings and a lack of respect for our opponents. It is easy to do for young men ...... and women.

Simple answer .....yes!

Have you ever watched the NFL Hall of Fame speeches by the inductees. There is way more than mere athletic talent that got those men into the Hall of Fame, almost to the man (there are exceptions of course), it is their personal character, appreciation for their families, their fellow players, and usually a higher being, that equally contributed to making these men great. Thus great players can also be of great character.

Just curious if you disagree.
