He gets asked the question constantly. For some reason, people think the answer is going to change between now and next January and February when the portal will be the most active. If simply saying "when we see fit, we'll use it," worked then it would not be a continuing subject.

his answer gets more scattered and makes less sense each time he's asked.
his trading burrow for lawrence comparison isn't even CLOSE to what's being asked, but it fits HIS narrative so he'll keep going with that one.

We are the 2nd best team of the playoff era, and did it without transfers.
Like he said, if we have a must-have need we'll fill it. Otherwise we'll just keep doing what's led is to heights not remotely seen in the history of Clemson football and hardly seen in the history of college football.
What point in your apparently bitter life did you more enjoy Clemson football?

So Dabo is not opposed to the portal. He will use it when appropriate.
Time to start an alternative criticism

"I like who we got at Clemson" He will ALWAYS "like" who we got........no matter who we got he's gonna "like 'em". We could have a bunch of Daniel High School players on our team and he'd still "like who we got"

Dabo and his staff recruit at a very high level, so...

they've more than earned any benefit of the doubt.
That said, Dabo is right. All you get, all anyone gets, is 85 scholarships. That's it, so if someone goes down with an injury, you can't just run out and bring in a transfer portal guy to replace them because there is no scholarship for them.
That's probably why there are currently more than 1,000 kids in the transfer portal.

college football is evolving before our eyes.
we've also lost 20 (TWENTY) players to the portal since 2019 and he's done either one of two things to "replenish" or "backfill" those spots:
-give the schollie to a "hard worker" (ie walk-on) -depend on the next recruiting class, which is a slippery slope b/c they're FRESHMEN
the talent level of our team will slip drastically if it hasn't already doing option 1. If you depend on option 2 we're always gonna hear "we're young" as an excuse when we start out 3-2.
if he doesn't change or adapt to today's environment it will be a tough slide downhill.

There are absolutely players available through the transfer portal that would benefit Clemson. Schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and Oklahoma, all of which recruit at the same or a higher level than Clemson, have proven it, but you gotta have a scholarship available for them.
I also think it fair to say that a lot of these top-tier transfer portal guys are making under the table deals long before they announce their intentions to enter the transfer portal public.

go read David Hood's FB post a week or so ago. It's an analysis on Clemsons scholarship numbers and recruiting class size over the last few years. Very enlightening and frightening at the same time.

but those are typically one-and-done type arrangements. Not sure you could convince him to hold on to those in case he needs to go get a guy from the transfer portal. He'd rather give it to a walk-on who he thinks has been committed to the program and has earned it.
It's a hard thing to predict.

I know it's a roster management nightmare, BUT.....

127 other FBS schools utilize the portal.
Clemson, Air Force, & Army do not/have not.............even Navy has once over the last few years, but I'm sure that's a one-off.
If Clemson wasn't losing players to the portal then it wouldn't be a big deal, BUT we are so he needs to "figure out" how to predict and utilize it........don't have to depend on it, but using it like Ohio State, UGA, Bama, etc.... would be good enough.

are you having trouble with? Not one of those 20 transfers has done anything to impede the best run in Clemson history, and the transfer portal is not the reason we're 3-2.
Again, are you slow? You seem slow.

Dude... why can't you make your point without attacking people? You've done it twice so far in this thread.
I sure hope this team starts winning like they are capable of soon. Every day the same 10 to 20 people come up on to these boards and rip each other to shreds because someone says something someone else doesn't agree with. This is a forum to ask questions and express opinions. 99% of the folks here love Clemson.... Having an opinion that is different from yours doesn't make them a coot or slow. Losing upsets people and causes people to question decisions. That is human nature. Winning will cure all of this!

The pool of portal players is artificially inflated because of covid exemptions allowing players to play 6 seasons. Most of these issues will be self correcting. We’re losing players to the portal because super seniors stuck around. Which kind of balances out what you appear to believe the bigger problem is.

You can't help yourself can you! It wouldn't matter what Dabo says about the transfer portal, you're going to have something negative to say about. But it is sad that you're not a HC, but have all the ideas that a HC should follow!!!!

He is going to keep getting those questions until he starts using transfers. You can’t keep losing all the talent we lose through the portal, to injuries, to graduation, and players that don’t work out and not replace them with transfers.
You can’t tell me there aren’t players that Clemson wouldn’t benefit by when Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Oklahoma, all have players starting on both sides of the ball that they got through the portal.
Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State out recruit Clemson pretty much every year. They also use the portal. We can’t compete with that if we’re not doing the same.
One of my very simple rules for life is actions speak louder than words. He can keep saying he’s perfectly fine with the portal. Nothing will change until he actually uses the portal.
If every time somebody had a girlfriend she was an Asian under 5 feet tall and this went on year after year after year and people kept asking that person if he only likes short Asian girls and they said no I like all types of women but that person still year after year girlfriend after girlfriend is an Asian under 5 feet tall what are you gonna believe your lying eyes or what they’re telling you?

Apparently one of your other simple rules of life is that you should do what everyone else is doing....just because they are. You mention Georgia as an example we should follow....really?? You'd trade our culture, championships and overall program success for that? Same for Oklahoma?? Same for Ohio State? Foolish!!

When we have, or any other school has an injured player, you can't just take away their scholarship and replace them with a player from the portal and give them that scholarship, and they're not coming without a scholarship!!!!

Coach has evolved his position
Oct 12, 2021, 4:18 PM
|
|
Which is unsurprising because he is adaptive and smart. But to say “would you trade Trevor for Joe Burrow?” is a false narrative. A reasonable question would be “why does Clemson have 20-30 walk-on caliber athletes on team when we can recruit and sign much better quality athletes?”
The answer is likely that Coach has developed and will continue to develop high character teams.

He has slightly modulated his wording of his answer.
I hate to break it to you but actions speak louder than words. And Dabo can say whatever Dabo wants. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re not using the portal. Until we do it’s going to be obvious he’s opposed to it.
And the dumb analogy of Trevor Lawrence is beyond stupid because only one quarterback can be on the field at a time. You need multiple players at every other position. You need depth and numbers at every other position. We don’t have that. Not like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State.
And this narrative that there aren’t any quality players in the portal again is ridiculous. Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio state, and other top programs have multiple starters on both sides of the ball that they got through the portal.

roster of "guys we like" but we don't need to place any because we have more guys we like behind them?
But we are out of scholarships? And no one to recruit in May...can't control injuries.

not the issue.
He said very clearly in the past that he doesn’t “like” the portal. Nothing he said today changed that stance.
He has never once in the past said he would “refuse” to use the portal if he needed to.
What he said today simply reinforced his long-standing position.
He doesn’t like it, but he will use it when it is appropriate. So far as one of the most astute coaches in America, he has decided that to this point it has not been necessary.
But when he DOES use the portal, I have no doubt that YOU and some OTHERS will be right there CRITICIZING the player(s) he has brought in through the portal.

LOL, JoJo Earle says hello. Dabo could have landed him, but staff told him "we were full". So he went to Bama where he starts.
The next week, Dabo handed out eight walk-on schollies to 5-hearts.
So no, the fact that we don't have an alpha slot receiver most definitely is part of the reason we are 3-2. Sorry.

Without Dabo explicitly saying it, I suspect that Dabo realizes that Clemson is still something of a 'niche appeal' situation to HS recruits which recognize the longer term values of character and humility, as opposed to the 'money #####' colleges which are more widely known to appeal to the near-sighted / money-hungry HS recruits. (Of course, now that Clemson has been winning like mad over the past 10 years, we also have appeal as a university which ALSO provides a great platform for NFL and/or coaching careers.)
In other words, rather than dumping out our niche recruiting advantage for high character kids by dipping into the Portal Sauce too often, Dabo is keeping the Clemson recruiting narrative pristine by either avoiding the portal (i.e., our practice to date) or being highly selective at such time as we choose to imbibe in the portal (i.e., during the rare time in the future when we actually use it).
Who knows ... if UNC keeps tanking, then maybe Travis Shaw will de-commit from the Tarheels and give us another look.

Oct 12, 2021, 4:56 PM

our "niche" culture has lost 20 players to the portal since 2019.
They need to be replaced........not with walk-ons.......and not ALL with freshman recruits from the next class.
He has to have a balance of portal utilization or we will slip......if we haven't already.

By and large we’re losing guys who have beaten out and want to start somewhere else, or have already graduated from Clemson and still have football eligibility. And for the record, neither UGA nor Ohio State have won a Natty since Clemson’s won two so let’s see them do something with the portal before citing them as the preferred model. OSU had one fluke year and Bam would be strong with or without the portal like us. I’ll take Booth over Kendrick any day.

I guess the argument could be made that OSU didn’t win the national championship because of the portal (Joe Burrows), but I’m reluctant to point that out because I want to agree with you.

I get the whole "Clemson culture" argument. I do. It would be naive to suggest that it isn't part of our appeal on the recruiting front.
However, the transfer portal only works in one direction at Clemson: outbound.
We absolutely can be selective and bring in high-character guys for a need---but for some reason won't. That is the issue that needs to be discussed, even if Dabo finds it tiresome. If we're willing to hand out scholarships to 5'8" walk on wide receivers who are too small/slow to play at an elite program like ours but won't hand out one transfer scholarship to a high-character guy who fills a need, something is off.

He is doing a nice job providing clarification on something
Oct 12, 2021, 4:45 PM
|
|
he has communicated relatively poorly in the past.
Previous statements have led many people to believe that he doesn't like the transfer portal and isn't willing to use it.
He has recently started to modify that a bit to say that he will use it if necessary.
I get it, using the transfer portal isn't ideal. In a perfect world, we would never use it, and could simply build championship-caliber teams through high school recruiting. In that perfect world, we would also never lose a player to transfer because Clemson is perfect and no one would ever want to leave.
Back to reality, the transfer portal is here whether we like it or not. We will continue to lose players to the portal, and will continue to have an opportunity to fill missing pieces by using the portal should we choose to.
We've see it benefit our basketball program greatly, and I hope that Dabo will talk to Brad about this (if he hasn't already) so that he can learn how much of a positive it can be when done right.

Wrong. He hasn’t recently started to modify it…

You are confusing Dabo communicating poorly with fans listening poorly.
March 2021 he said… “That is a position you may consider, but we aren’t going to jump in the portal and bring a backup in here,” Swinney said during the press conference. “Would have to be an elite, multi-year starter, all-conference type of guy. If it’s not that guy, we are good where we are.” https://rubbingtherock.com/2021/03/02/clemson-football-dabo-swinney-transfer-portal-cb/amp/
August 2021 he said… “ But if some guys decide to leave in May, well, you can't recruit high school kids in May, so you better have a plan in place. If we have to go that route at some point, we'll get the best. But our criteria and process will be the exact same as it is for high school kids." https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/update/dabo-swinney-on-his-philosophy-with-the-transfer-portal-37456
It’s pretty clear to me, but people just love to hear what they want to hear. I understand why he's tired of it.

Bingo. We have a winner.
People want to grab a portal player just so we can say we are utilizing the portal. First, most of the players in the portal are either (a) not good enough to start or they would have stuck with the school they were at, or (b)an issue - i.e. Kendrick. There may be a few unicorns in there, but not many that could come to Clemson and start, and the fact that they're in the portal means they aren't wiling to be a backup or work their way onto the field.
Is what it is. I'm glad we aren't constantly scouring the portal for players that we weren't good enough, either on the field or character wise, to offer as a recruit to begin with.

because he thinks he has communicated it well.
But there is a reason why the media keeps asking him about it, and why fans continue to be unclear as to what he thinks about this topic. And it’s not simply because all of these people haven’t been listening.

He only said he didn’t “like” the portal. He never once ever said he would refuse to use it. That’s fans hearing what they want to hear and interpreting it in a way that fits their attitude regarding the current 3-2 record.

Since you brought up basketball portal “benefiting Clemson greatly”. So tell me what great benefit we had from BB. Are you saying that we benefited greatly as in - it allowed us to finish in he middle of the pack and make it to the dance every 4-5 years? If this is a great benefit - we differ on the phrase meaning. The difference between Dabo and BB is that Dabo evaluates, recruits, developes, then plays them. BB sure appears to miss on his evaluations as many transfer away, thus requiring his use of the portal. He does not develop big men, and they transfer away.

Basketball is several years ahead of football when it comes

to the way transfers impact roster management.
Transfers have absolutely helped our basketball program. We have gained far more than we have lost over the last 5 years when it comes to transfers. Our staff has done a great job with that IMO.
Keep criticizing Brad all you like for losing players to transfer, as if it’s a failure on his part. But as transfers continue to become more of a thing in football, Dabo will lose his share too. You’ll see then that it’s not a failure of coaches to lose guys to transfer, but a bad side effect of the culture within the sport.

most of these responses epitomize Fairweather fans. So, Dabo is wrong!? So what, time to run Dabo off? One bad year and most TNET is ready to run him off.
You either trust he's the guy and shut it, otherwise you're saying he's the wrong guy for the job!

Issue with the portal or how it’s used in its current form?
Oct 12, 2021, 6:06 PM
|
|
I’m a big fan of Dabo so I’m going to mention what I take issue with about his answers to the portal question and also throw him a bone here on what may be some portal usage context he’s not interested in sharing publicly. 110% pure speculation on the latter. Wouldn’t be a chat board without it.
First, I love Dabo but c’mon man, get some better examples. He’s used two examples in recent pressers talking about the portal as a hypothetical way to replace Trevor Lawrence. Not exactly nailing the landing there. Dabo is smarter than that and so are the folks he’s speaking to. The media members may be “idiots” but no one on the planet would suggest that’s a viable use of the transfer portal. It’s insulting to fans, boosters, media (if that matters) or anyone asking the question. Also undercuts what could ultimately be a good message too.
I trust there are more logical, reasonable examples he could use, maybe a 3 star guy like Grady Jarrett who really came on late in his career - if we had used the portal to back fill when he was a fr/so maybe we never see a guy like that reach his potential at Clemson. I don’t know. Maybe that’s a flawed example too but I suspect there are guys Dabo has seen grow and even go on to play on Sundays who he’s worried about pushing out. Use those type examples, not TL16 who was practically destined to start and be great from day 1.
One thing I keep wondering - is the manner in which programs are getting quality players out of the portal something that’s ultimately pretty nefarious (dirty) and it’s not that Dabo dislikes the portal, he just dislikes what it takes to be successful in the current version of the portal. I get it if Dabo doesn’t want to participate in ongoing recruiting of active players at other programs. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s going on heavily and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that’s what Dabo opposes. And rather than stand up and throw dirt on other programs, he tries to thread the needle and leave it open - we’ll use the portal if there’s someone we need and they fit - without calling out specifically what he doesn’t like. Again, I’m guessing here but I suspect what he doesn’t like is more nuanced than what he’s attempting to say publicly.
After seeing the issues we’ve had with depth this year - and not just because of injuries, we flat out don’t have quality depth at OL or any depth at slot WR - Dabo has to understand where some of the questions are coming from though. Hopefully he and the coaching staff can find ways to continue to build better depth through signings and spot use of the portal so we don’t run into the same issues we have this season.

Was about to post the exact same thing about “recruiting guys into the portal.” TCU’s coach already outright said SEC teams are recruiting his players.
The reality very well could be that teams are getting starters out of the portal because they’re recruiting them into the portal and to their school and Dabo isn’t going to play that kind of (illegal) ball. The other reality here implies that the good players are already spoken for, which leaves slim pickens. Dabo ain’t recruiting and he ain’t picking over the leftovers.
As you said, this is pure speculation, but I have to believe there is truth to it.

Can someone help me with his Shipley comments? Shipley and Mafah were signed. Mellusi exits after the spring game. He’s down one running back. How is he having to choose between his two freshman and a transfer player? The real answer is they could have explored the portal before August camp. That would have brought in an upperclassman to compete for a spot on the depth chart that was pretty lacking in star power or experience. The real answer is either they did look at the portal and didn’t like what they found or they ignored the portal because they were ok with being down one player prior to another departure and an in-season injury. Why is he throwing up a smokescreen?

Be careful Dabo. You sound like the execs who ran Kodak in the 80’s. “we like where we are, why change.” Dabo continues to dig his heels in his winning strategy for the past. Even Saban knew he had to evolve.

First, in response to all of those who question are losing players to the transfer portal, please name one player that we lost to the portal that has hurt us. Kendrick? No. Feaster (he might have been a graduate)? No. Chez and Lyn J? Maybe but only because Shipley was injured.
Second, in response to everyone who is fussing about giving scholarships to walk ons, I have just two words to say: Hunter Renfrow. Enough said on that.
Let’s get behind our Tigers and our head coach. As someone else posted, we are the second best team in this era, head and shoulders above everyone else but Alabama. And Alabama and Nick Saban are Alabama and Nick Saban. Nothing you can do about that. I wouldn’t trade us for Ohio State, LSU, or Oklahoma, and certainly not for Georgia, despite what they have done this year.
Everybody focuses on the LSU loss - they were just really, really good that year - and the Ohio State loss - that was caused by Dabo and his not ranking them in the polls. The Buckeyes had one goal last year - to beat Clemson, no matter what - and Dabo poured fuel on that fire when it was least needed. As for the 3-2 start? My opinion is that it boils down to 2 things - an exceptionally good quarterback that has lost all of his confidence and an OC that never was any good at calling plays without having superstars at every skill position on offense. I am not on the band wagon for pushing out Tony, but he needs to either figure it out or let someone else call the plays. One final thing - why don’t we call plays for Ajou?? He was a beast in the spring game against a pretty good defense.
