Didn't like FG at end....

Oct 23, 2022, 9:17 AM

I may be in the minority here, but hated the last FG decision on 4 and 2/3.

Yes, I understand if you don't make it, you give Syracuse a chance to tie with a FG. However, by kicking a FG, you give them a chance to WIN in regulation. And if you make the first down, game over.

The worst that could happen by going for it and not making it is a tie in regulation.

What was most desirable of course, was a sustained drive to run out the clock, but barring that, the FG was a total no-brainer.

Re: Agree it seemed kind of useless to me too, go for the 1st down***

Oct 23, 2022, 8:30 PM

Going for the first down would be playing to win. You make it and go into victory formation. It wasn't a chip shot. It was 44 yards. If he misses, then you are on defense and a FG still ties.

Half of the same people saying there is no reason to question the call would be screaming the coaches lost the game had the decision backfired. The decision is certainly debatable as far as what the rest of us would do. The decision we would make if we were in Dabo's shoes, depends on our confidence in the offense, compared to defense, and the confidence in Potter for a 44 yard FG. The decision says that Dabo has extreme confidence in Potter, and more confidence in the defense than the offense.

Dabo's way worked. He is paid a lot of money to make the call, and he knows the team better than we do. I'm glad he thinks that much of our defense, because they are still giving me heart failure. I would have loved for us to have gotten a 1st down, and Syracuse have not seen the ball again.

Re: Didn't like FG at end....

We were moving the ball well on the ground. I too thought maybe ??? we go for the win also, accept that not making it on 4th down could lead to OT with a Syracuse FG, but going for the FG still left the door open for a loss as a TD still wins it for Syracuse.

Had it been 4th and 1, I wonder if a different decision would have been made.

I'm not a coach and it worked out well, so to quote that great philosopher Bill Murray,"It just doesn't matter."

Re: Didn't like FG at end....

Oct 23, 2022, 9:58 AM

My only thought on the FG was why not line up like you're going for it and try a "hard count" and get the cheap first down? Even if we screw it up and lose 5 yards, BT would still be well within his range.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Didn't like FG at end....

Oct 23, 2022, 10:18 AM

Nah, either go for it or don't. The FG was 41 yds. 46 yds while in BT's range is no chip shot nor for that matter was 41 yds.

The coaches made the right call. It was gonna be tough for Syracuse to drive the length of the field for a TD with well under 2 minutes and no time outs.

Again, 4th and 1, maybe??? we go for it and remove any chance for a Syracuse win??

On to ND.

Oct 23, 2022, 8:46 PM

I agree that we don't take a delay of game, but were we out of time outs? I would tend to agree, make a decision and go with it, since a TO would essentially ice our own kicker. However, it is a decision that could be made.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think they did that from the FG alignment.***

There is really no right answer as either choice had risks and rewards. So in this situation the only way to judge the choice is by the result. If it worked then it was a good choice and if not it was a bad choice.

Go for the points and make them drive the length of the field to get a TD. Turned out to be a great decision as our D stepped up and got the interception. And guess what we are now 8-0 . Maybe an ugly 8-0 but non the less still 8-0.

Kicking the field goal was absolutely the right call.

Oct 23, 2022, 11:24 AM

Not kicking it, and then failing to convert on fourth down, gives Syracuse good starting position to tie with a field goal or win with a TD, even if they miss the extra point. Coaches without the job security Dabo has can lose their jobs over boneheaded decisions like that.

I agree. Drew Swinney got up from hold position and said something to the line. Watching live, I thought maybe they were trying to draw off sides. Watching the tape, I wonder if the plan was for a fake and Drew saw something that forced him to call it off. Dabo definitely was saying “dang it” after the play.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very simple.... If you are Syracuse

Oct 23, 2022, 11:33 AM

What are you hoping Clemson would do in that situation? They were hoping we would kick the field goal because they still have a chance to win. The last thing they wanted was for us to try to win the game right there, hence I agree with you we should have.

The fact that...

Illini,

That extra 3 points made ALL of the difference on that last Syracuse drive.

Rather than having to drive 35 yards for a tying field goal they have to 75 yards AND score a TD. The interception that wins the game comes while they are trying to drive that last forty yards.

HUGE advantage for our defense there.

Re: Didn't like FG at end....

Oct 23, 2022, 1:26 PM

I was worried too. So many bad things can happen late in the game with a FG attempt. I felt like we were running so well that if we needed 2 yards off left tackle we could almost count on it.

That being said, when Syracuse was driving down the field at the end I was thankful they had to press for 7 rather than just settle for a FG & tie.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Didn't like FG at end....

Oct 23, 2022, 7:35 PM

Not sure you do understand what that was, we have one of the best kickers and going to up by 6 does multiple things.

1. Forces them to score a TD and an extra point.
2. Make the FG and pin them back vs not get the first and give them both field position and momentum.
3. If they do score a TD, then all we need is a FG to win.
3. The worst thing that could happen is we lose not tie.
